I was trained as a gymnast in Hunan, China, in the 1970s. The gvernment wanted t transfer (转学) me t a schl fr athletes while my parents wanted me t becme an engineer, because they firmly believed there was nly ne sure way t happiness: a safe and well-paid jb. But my dream was t becme a Chinese pera singer. Althugh I tried everything I culd t g t pera schl, I knew I was t ld t be trained and my dream wuld never cme true.
But that’s s unfair. S I was determined t find anther calling — bks. I satisfied my hunger fr parental advice frm the Fu Lei’s Family Letters by Fu Lei and Zhu Meifu, fund my rle mdel f an independent wman frm Jane Eyre, learned t be efficient frm Cheaper by the Dzen, and inspired myself t study abrad after reading Cmplete Wrks f Sanma and Lessns frm Histry.
I came t the U. S. in 1995 where I started cmparative reading. Cmparing and cntrasting give schlars a mre cmplete understanding f a tpic. S I thught, well, if cmparative reading wrks fr research, why nt d it in daily life t? S I started reading bks in pairs. They can be abut peple wh are invlved in the same event — Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacsn and Jhn Adams by David McCullugh, fr example, r friends with shared experiences. I als cmpare the same stries in different genres r similar stries frm different cultures, as Jseph Campbell did in his wnderful bk The Pwer f Myth.
Bks have given me a magic prtal (入口) t cnnect with peple f the past and the present. I have cme t believe that cming true is nt the nly purpse f a dream. Its mst imprtant purpse is t get us in tuch with where dreams cme frm, where passin cmes frm and where happiness cmes frm. Even a shattered (遭受极大打击的) dream can d that fr yu. Imagine yu fund a wallet cntaining a stranger’s cntact details but n cash. Wuld yu return it t its wner? Nw imagine the same wallet cntained a few bankntes. Wuld that change yur respnse? Des it depend n the amunt f mney? And hw d yu think ther peple wuld react?
Hnesty makes the wrld g rund. Withut peple trusting in ne anther, sciety wuld fall apart. Hnesty is therefre studied academically. Mst wrk in the area, thugh, takes place under cntrlled cnditins in labs, ften featuring well-ff and well-educated Westerners as its subjects. By cntrast Alain Chn f the University f Michigan and his clleagues have taken such behaviral ecnmics arund the wrld, cvering 40 cuntries, 355 cities and mre than 17,000 peple.
As the team reprt this week in Science, Dr Chn’s research assistants entered public buildings. They handed in a wallet t the receptinist, saying they had fund it n the street utside. Each wallet cntains cntact details. Imprtantly, sme wallets als included $13.45, while thers nt. Then, the team simply waited t see wh wuld return the wallet.
In 38 f the 40 cuntries, the wallets with mney were returned mre ften than thse withut (51% vs 40%). In additin, wallets cntaining a larger sum f mney ($94.15) were even mre likely (by abut anther 10%) t be returned than thse with less.
With greater temptatin (诱惑), then, cmes greater hnesty — at least when it cmes t lst wallets. Interestingly, thugh, such hnesty is nt reflected in peple’s expectatins f thers. When surveyed, mst f 299 vlunteers predicted that the mre mney in a wallet, the less likely it wuld be returned.
A certain dubt abut the mtives f thers is prbably gd fr survival. But the warm inner thught f “ding the right thing” is als a pwerful mtivatin. Hw this altruism develped is much debated — particularly when it extends, as in Dr Chn’s experiments, t strangers whm the altruist has n expectatin f ever meeting. Be that as it may, as this study shws, such altruism is real and universal.
8. Hw is Alain Chn’s research different frm the previus?
A. It cvered varied subjects and backgrunds.
B. Mre scientists participated in the research.
C It was carried ut in cntrlled situatins.
D It tk n accunt f well-educated Westerners.
9. What can we learn frm the research?
A. Rate f hnesty varies amng cuntries.
B. Peple prefer returning wallets withut mney.
C. The less mney in a wallet, the higher rate f returning.
D. Wallets with mre mney are mre likely t be given back.
10. What des the underlined wrd “altruism” in the last paragraph mean?
A Dubt f thers’ mtivatins.B. Cncern fr thers’ needs.
C. The mtivatin fr survival.D. Understanding f peple’s dubt.
11. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Mney Answers All Things.
B. Mney Makes the Mare G.
C. Hnesty Is Questined in Face f Mney.
D. Mney Desn’t Make the Wrld G Rund.

When yu’re super tired, yu may be mre likely t take a nap than grab a snack. What abut msquites? Scientists have lng been interested in msquit sleep cycles.
Hwever, it’s hard t study sleeping msquites. That’s partly because msquites will get excited when they sense a meal: the experimenter. That makes it difficult fr the insects t nd ff. And when msquites d nd ff, they lk rather similar t thse that are just resting t save energy.
Ajayi at the University f Cincinnati and his clleagues studied msquites’ sleep. The team fcused n three species knwn t carry diseases. The first, Aedes aegypti, is active by day. The secnd, Culex pipiens, prefers t dine after dusk. The third —the malaria-carrying Anpheles stephensi—is up at night. All these msquites were left alne in a rm. There, the team used cameras and sensrs t spy n them. Tgether, these bservatins helped the researchers spt a sleeping msquit.
After abut tw hurs, the msquites appeared t nd ff. They didn’t mve fr a lng time. And as time went n, Culex pipiens and Aedes aegypti shwed less respnse when the experimenter walked in the rm. This shwed that a tasty smell was less likely t wake thse species when in a deep sleep.
Then the insects were placed in clear tubes that were shaken every few minutes t keep them frm falling int a deep sleep. After 4 t 12 hurs, the team expsed the insects t sme heated sweat. That mimicked(模仿) the presence f a hst n which the msquites culd snack. In anther experiment, a human vlunteer ffered up a leg fr msquites t feed n fr five minutes.
In bth cases, the msquites that gt a full night’s rest were much mre likely t land n the hst than sleep-deprived(剥夺) nes. In eight tests, an average f 77 percent f the well- rested msquites went fr a bld meal. Only 23 percent f msquites that were sleepy did the same.
The findings pen avenues fr research int cntrlling msquites, Ajayi says. That, in turn, culd help keep peple safe frm msquit-spread diseases.
12. What adds difficulty t studying sleeping msquites?
A. Msquites’ daily rutines.B. The smell f human beings.
C. The wide variety f msquites.D. Msquites’ different sleeping habits.
13. What did Ajayi d t study msquites?
A. He tracked msquites’ behavir.B. He tested the msquites n his leg.
C. He went ver many previus studies.D. He expsed msquites t many snacks.
14. What is the finding f the study?
A. Msquites need mre sleep than humans.
B. Msquites never bite when lacking sleep.
C. Sleepy msquites like the smell f heated sweat.
D. Sleepy msquites are mre likely t sleep than t eat.
15. What is the significance f this study?
A. It can help t understand human sleep.
B. It can help t cntrl the spread f sme diseases.
C. It can help t t find ut technlgy t mimick msquites.
D. It can help t discver the differences between varius msquites.
