Electrnic sprts such as "Frtnite" are vastly mre ppular than Olympic events such as dressage(花式骑术) r curling(冰壶). In fact, they are mre ppular than mst mainstream sprts. Only 28% f British bys aged 16-19 watch any traditinal live sprts; 57% play vide games.
Stick-in-the-muds may cmplain that e-sprts are nt prper sprts. Many parents, bserving their bad-tempered teenagers sitting n the s fa all day twiddling their thumbs and shuting "Quick, pass me the shtgun!" at a screen, wuld agree. Yet vide games are highly cmpetitive, with prfessinal leagues that play in crwded stadiums.
There are perhaps nly 200 tennis stars in the wrld wh can make a living frm playing in turnaments. By cntrast "League f Legends", a fantasy game played by teams f five, supprts ver 1,000 n gd wages. Its Wrld Champinship final last year was watched by 44 millin peple.
Critics f e-sprts ffer mral bjectins, t. They are addictive, Prince Harry has called fr "Frtnite" t be banned fr this reasn. They are vilent. Surely, at a time f glbal disharmny, it is a bad idea t make simulated killing an Olympic sprt. The Olympics aim t prmte peace. Finally, vide games are cmmercial. Nbdy wns basketball; "League f Legends" is wned by Tencent, a Chinese megacrpratin.
Nne f these arguments is very cnvincing. The idea that an activity, rather than a substance, can be addictive is cntrversial amng dctrs, as is the existence f a causal link between gaming and vilence. And the idea that warlike sprts have n place in the Olympics is hard t cnsist with histry. Javelin-thrwing(掷标枪) and wrestling were intrduced in 708 BC. They are still there.
    24. What des the underlined wrd "Stick-in-the-muds" in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?

    25. Which f the fllwing is NOT the mral bjectin ffered by critics?

    B. E-sprts cntain certain elements f vilence.
    C. Glbal disharmny arises frm the ppularity f e-sprts.
    D. The industry f e-sprts is cncerned with making prfit.
    26. Why are Javelin-thrwing and wrestling mentined in the last paragraph?
    A. T cmpare the difference between the tw sprts.
    B. T shw the clse cnnectin between gaming and vilence.
C T prve the fact that warlike sprts can exist in the Olympics.
    D. T present the phenmenn f peple's addictin t the warlike sprts.
    27. In which sectin f a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Sprts. B. Fictin. C. Science. D. Educatin.

As a university prfessr, I have been immersed in thery and guess fr s lng that it recently struck me: I dn't knw hw t d anything. By "d", I mean smething material, smething dne with my hands that prduce an actual prduct.

S many new terms. In an instant, I was a student again in all respects: The anxiety, the self-dubt, the wndering if I had made a mistake. And then I recalled: "Nthing in the wrld can take the place f persistence... Educatin will nt; the wrld is full f educated failures." S I wrked my way thrugh my basic wiring curse. My initial impulse t jump ship gradually gave way t the awareness that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill.
What fllwed ahead was the curse's climax: Each student was presented with a switch and a lighting fixture(照明设备). The task was t install them-in-a-dr-frame and-wire them; but nt thrw the switch until the instructr was present. There I was, an experienced prfessr, standing like a fresh-faced schlby. I wrked away, using my tls t cnnect wires. When I was dne, I raised my hand. The instructr lked ver my jb and glanced at me. "Hit the switch," he said.
It's hard t characterize that mment. But I did feel that learning is nt smething that ends early in life. I need t widen my hrizn thrugh cnstant learning. The brader the hrizn, the mre pprtunities there are t learn smething new.
    I hit the switch.
    There was light.
    In mre ways than ne.

    D

Upn seeing the shiny gld masks. brnze ware, jade war e and ivry n display, I was amazed at the pen and inclusive ancient civilizatin in Sanxingdui.
