Think f the Mississippi Delta. Maybe yu imagine cttn fields and blues music. It has been all that. But fr mre than a century, the Delta has als been a ppular destinatin fr immigrants. Recently, I was assigned t learn mre abut ne immigrant grup in particular: the Chinese in Greenville, a small city alng the Mississippi River. There I met Raymnd Wng, whse family has lng been part f the cmmunity.
The first wave f Chinese immigrants came t the Mississippi Delta sn after the Civil War, and the pace picked up by the early 1900s. The Chinese riginally came t pick cttn, but they quickly started pening grcery stres, mstly in the African-American cmmunities where they lived. The stres sld meat, fresh vegetables, canned gds, anything yu might need. Nthing Chinese abut them, except the wners.
“On my street alne, there were at least fur grcery stres. I’m talking abut a small street,” Wng recalls. “I was raised in a grcery stre. All my family — six f us — lived in a cuple f rms at the back f ur stre. As sn as I culd cunt mney I had t wrk in the stre.”
In 1968, Wng’s father pened a Chinese restaurant called Hw Jy in Greenville, ne f the first in the twn. At the time, nbdy knew what Chinese fd was. “But the restaurant existed fr 40 years. I wrked there, t,” Wng says.
Wng remembers a time f big excitement when he was yung: The family finally culd affrd t buy a huse in a white neighbrhd. Then suddenly, that cnversatin stpped.
“When peple fund ut that we were mving in they started thrwing bttles in the driveway,” Wng says. “We ended up building a huse directly behind the grcery.”
And the future? It’s prbably nt in the Delta. Wng remembers the questin his sn asked when he was still in high schl: “Dad, d yu want me t take ver the stre when yu retire?” Wng’s respnse was immediate: “N. I want yu t d better than me.” That’s the stry f the typical Delta Chinese.

A Japanese cmpany tried t land the first M1 private space vehicle n Mn. Hwever, n 25 April, 2023, the M1 spacecraft became the latest in a lng line f Mn missins that didn’t quite make it. Until nw, nly three gvernment-funded space agencies have sft-landed n Mn and nly China is successful in its first attempt.
Why is it s hard t tuch dwn safely n Mn?
Getting a missin t Mn, arund 384,000 kilmetres frm Earth, is much mre challenging than sending a satellite int lw-Earth rbit — and failures can ccur early n, even fr missins that dn’t plan t land. This happened with NASA’s Lunar Flashlight missin, a small spacecraft that was launched in December, 2022 and was suppsed t map Mn’s ice. Its engines stpped wrking sn after launch.
Even if a lander makes it t the neighbrhd f Mn, it still has t find its way dwn t the surface with n glbal-psitining satellites fr guidance and virtually n atmsphere t help t slw it dwn. Once it gets within the critical last few kilmetres, its sftware has t deal quickly and autnmusly with any last-minute challenges, such as its sensrs ptentially becming cnfused by large amunts f dust kicked up by the engines.
T pull ff a successful landing in such a challenging envirnment, the gvernment-funded space agencies have spent huge amunt f mney n repeated tests and have learned a lt frm each failed and successful attempt.
“In the 1960s, when the United States and the Sviet Unin were racing t land there, they crashed spacecraft after spacecraft befre each finally succeeded in 1966,” says Stephen Indyk, directr f space systems at Hneybee Rbtics in Greenbelt, Maryland. “Withut lessns learned frm the setbacks and successes, it’s a lt t ask f a private cmpany t get it right in the first attempt.”
8. What can be learned abut M1 spacecraft?
A. It became the latest unsuccessful Mars missin.B. It was launched by a Chinese private cmpany.
C. It was Japan’s first public -funded space vehicle.D. It failed t sft-land n the surface f Mn.
9. What led t the failure f the Lunar Flashlight missin?
A. The cmputers.B. The engines.C. The sensrs.D. The satellites.
10. What is paragraph 4 f the text mainly abut?
A. The landing challenges.B. The necessity f cperatin.
C. The steps t land n Mn.D. The csts f space explratin.
11. What des the underlined wrd “setbacks” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Difficulties.B. Benefits.C. Failures.D. Attempts.

The green revlutin in the 1960s was ne f the greatest achievements in human histry. By prmting mre prductive varieties f wheat and, especially, rice, scientists in India, Mexic, China and the Philippines dubled Asia’s rice yields frm 1965 t 1995.
But the wrld has reached a crssrad again. By ne estimate, the wrld will need t prduce almst a third mre rice by 2050. Yet rice prductin has increased by less than 1% a year ver the past decade.
This has many explanatins. Urbanizatin and industrializatin have made labur and farmland scarcer (稀缺的). Overuse f chemicals and irrigatin have pisned sils and dried up grundwater. But the biggest reasn may be glbal warming that ften leads t extreme cnditins. Heavy rains and drughts last year in India, the wrld’s biggest rice exprter, led t a reduced harvest and an exprt ban. Flds in Pakistan, the furth-biggest exprter, wiped ut 15% f its rice harvest. Rising sea-levels are causing salt t enter the Mekng Delta, Vietnam’s “rice bwl”.
It is getting wrse. Rice is nt just a victim f climate change, but als a cntributr t it. It is a bigger surce f greenhuse gas than any fdstuff except beef. If yu cunt the destructin f frestland fr rice fields, that ftprint is even bigger.
Therefre, gvernments need t attract prducers and cnsumers away frm rice. India and Indnesia are prmting millet, which is mre nutritius and uses much less water. Canceling subsidies (补贴) that favur rice ver ther crps wuld make such effrts mre effective. India, fr example, purchases rice frm farmers, ften at abve-market rates, then distributes it as fd aid t the pr. It shuld make its interventins mre rice-unfriendly, by replacing subsidies and free rice with incme supprt fr farmers and the pr. That wuld encurage farmers t chse the best crp fr their lcal cnditins — much f India’s agricultural nrth-west wuld switch frm rice t wheat vernight. Pr Indians wuld be free t chse a mre balanced diet. As a result, it wuld crrect a market unfavrable t envirnment and health.
12. What can we knw abut the green revlutin in Asia?
A. It has remarkably reduced the use f water and chemicals.
B. It nce increased rice prductin by mre than 3% a year.
C. It has ppularized mre prductive crps, especially wheat.
D. It has been mainly led by scientists frm America and Eurpe.
13. What is the mst serius threat t rice prductin accrding t the text?
A. Wrsening glbal warming.B. Unnecessary bans n rice exprt.
C. Lwering prices fr the crp.D. Urbanizatin and industrializatin.
14. What des the authr suggest the Indian gvernment d?
A. Expand the planting f rice.B. Give rice farmers mre subsidies.
C. Replace rice with better lcal crps.D. Distribute rice as fd aid t the pr.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Achievements f the Green RevlutinB. Effrts t Prmte Mre Suitable Crps
C. Cnsequences f the Green RevlutinD. Ideas t Fix the Current Glbal Rice Crisis
