It is generally assumed that humans are the nly species that deal with the persistence (持续存在) f memry and the ability t remember friends and lved nes even if ne has nt seen then fra lng perid f time. “It’s nt the nine hur flight that wrries me,” I said. “It’s hw t get t my daughter’s nce I land. I’m really nervus,” Getting t my daughter in Bath invlved every frm f grund transprtatin—a bus, a train and even a shrt walk.
“There will be peple arund t help,” Max said patiently. “I’m sure yu can make it.” I was still nervus. But ur daughter Whitney was spending a semester f cllege in Bath, England. When she called a few days ag, she said she was terribly sick and cried. “I’m ging t take care f yu,” I said, surprising myself. We culdn’t affrd tw plane tickets t England, especially in such a hurry. But ne ticket fr me was dable, and my daughter needed me.
Whitney had explained that I shuld fly t Gatwick and take a bus t the train statin, where I’d find a cnnectin t Bath. The yellw huse she was sharing with anther girl was nly a shrt walk frm the train statin. On the same street, in fact.
At Newark, Max hugged me tightly as we said gdbye. “Yu’ll be fine,” he said. I barded the plane fr my direct flight. The seat was cmfrtable, but I was still uneasy. Hw wuld I ever find my bus when the plane landed at Gatwick? Frtunately, a vlunteer at the airprt saw my cnfusin and ffered t help. His warmth refreshed me. He easily lcated my bus and laded my suitcase. I gt n the bus with a wave t the vlunteer, wh assured me, “Yu’ll be fine.”
A few stps later, I was at the train statin. I hurried t the ticket windw. “Yur train t Bath leaves in five minutes,” the agent said. “Perfect timing.”
