“I’m happy t see that this area has becme a new green space. It is a hme fr lcal plants and animals and gives the residents f Staten Island a place t be utdrs, exercise and breathe fresh air. The newly pened park features walking paths, hiking trails, seven acres f native seed plts, a bird-bservatin twer, and a deck that verlks the hills, grassland and waterways,” says a lcal called Adams. “I used t avid appraching the place, but nw I’m lking frward t explring it.”

But humans may nt be alne. New research has shwn that apes (类人猿) als recgnize their friends even when they have nt seen them in years.
Lead researcher Dr. Christpher Krupenye created this research due t his sense ver the many years when he wrked with apes that individual chimpanzees r bnbs recgnized him even if they hadn’t seen him fr sme time.

In rder t test whether apes remember their friends, the researchers printed phts f chimpanzees and bnbs wh had died r left zs in Edinburgh, Sctland, Belgium and Japan. Using eye-tracking technlgy, the researchers were able t cnfirm that the apes spent mre time lking at their friends than they did at the apes they were nt familiar with.
The research team believes that apes’ lng-term scial memry can stretch back at least 26years. Additinally, they believe that this may indicate that like humans, chimpanzees and bnbs can miss their friends and families.

A brain implant allwed peple with head injuries t functin again. The deep brain stimulatin implant, develped by researchers at Stanfrd University, aims t bst activity between the regins respnsible fr cnsciusness learning, memry, thinking and prblem slving.
During the early trial, five peple with brain injuries reprted they were able t cncentrate, read, remember and drive prperly. The trial prved s effective that researchers had truble cmpleting the final stage, which was t switch ff the device fr three randm participants after tw f the patients declined.
Gina Arata, a trial participant, said, “I culdn’t remember anything. My left ft drpped, s I’d trip ver things all the time. I was always in car accidents. Since the implant, I haven’t had any speeding tickets. I dn’t trip anymre. I can remember hw much mney is in my bank accunt.”
Researchers selected patients fr the trial wh had recvered frm cmas (昏迷) with brain systems believed t be still well preserved, but nt functining as well as previusly. “In these patients, thse pathways are largely cmplete, but everything has been dwn-regulated (下降),” said Dr Jaimie Hendersn, a prfessr f neursurgery. “It’s as if the lights had been darkened and there just wasn’t enugh electricity t turn them back up.” The researchers hped that precise electrical stimulatin f specific areas culd turn the “lights” back up,and created a virtual mdel f each participant’s brain s they culd trial stimulatin at different lcatins ahead f surgery.
Guided by the thery, Dr Hendersn implanted the device in the five participants wh had sustained injuries between three and 18 years earlier. After allwing the device t bed-in fr tw weeks, the participants spent 90 days with it turned n fr 12 hurs a day. At the end f the 90-day treatment perid, the participants had imprved their mental prcessing speeds by an average f 32 percent.

Staten Island’s Fresh-kills, nce a dumping grund (垃圾倾倒场) fr New Yrkers, is nw a breathtaking park. The first part was pened t the public in Octber. With its grassland, hills and waterways ffering hiking and superb bird-watching, this is a great example f urban habitat restratin.

The newly pened park features walking paths, hiking trails, seven acres f native seed plts, a bird-bservatin twer, and a deck that verlks the hills, grassland and waterways,” says a lcal called Adams. “I used t avid appraching the place, but nw I’m lking frward t explring it.”
This prject is entirely fcused n envirnmental management. Slar panels prvide lighting in the parking lt and restrms, while the tilets are cmpsting (堆肥), returning waste t sil. Gina Arata, a trial participant, said, “I culdn’t remember anything. My left ft drpped, s I’d trip ver things all the time. I was always in car accidents. Since the implant, I haven’t had any speeding tickets. I dn’t trip anymre. I can remember hw much mney is in my bank accunt.”
Researchers selected patients fr the trial wh had recvered frm cmas (昏迷) with brain systems believed t be still well preserved, but nt functining as well as previusly. “In these patients, thse pathways are largely cmplete, but everything has been dwn-regulated (下降),” said Dr Jaimie Hendersn, a prfessr f neursurgery. “It’s as if the lights had been darkened and there just wasn’t enugh electricity t turn them back up.” The researchers hped that precise electrical stimulatin f specific areas culd turn the “lights” back up,and created a virtual mdel f each participant’s brain s they culd trial stimulatin at different lcatins ahead f surgery.
Guided by the thery, Dr Hendersn implanted the device in the five participants wh had sustained injuries between three and 18 years earlier. After allwing the device t bed-in fr tw weeks, the participants spent 90 days with it turned n fr 12 hurs a day. At the end f the 90-day treatment perid, the participants had imprved their mental prcessing speeds by an average f 32 percent.
“This is a pineering mment,” said Dr Nichlas Schiff, c-senir authr f the study. “Our gal nw is t try t take the systematic steps t make this a therapy (疗法). This is enugh f a signal fr us t make every effrt.”
