Fr the past three decades, Richard Sears, 71, has been fcusing n ne thing: Chinese culture.
His interest in Chinese language ges back t 1972, when he was a university student. “I had checked acrss Canada and the US. And I was n my way t Africa,” he says. “I wanted t see the wrld. But then I realized nly 7 percent f the wrld speaks English as a mther tngue. S I wanted t knw what it was like t speak anther language.” Richard bught a ne-way ticket t China t learn Chinese. At that time Richard supprted himself by teaching English.
Tw years later, he returned t the US t finish his study. He became a researcher after graduatin and later wrked as a sftware engineer in Silicn Valley. In 1981 he lst his jb. He even had t wrk n a night jb as a guard fr several years s that he culd study Chinese at night and get sme rest during the day. “I didn’t earn much, but at least I had time t read Chinese bks.” he says. At 40, he was already pretty fluent in Chinese.
In 1994 Richard suffered a heart attack. “I did nt knw if I wuld live anther hur,” he says. “When I finally recvered, I had t think abut my life. I had t plan as if I was ging t die maybe in a year. S I decided t better knw abut Chinese with mre effrts.”
Last September, Richard set up his studi in Nanjing as part f the lcal authrity’s plan t prmte cultural services. The studi fcuses n telling stries f Chinese culture and character rigins. They have made mre than 60 such vides in bth English and Chinese.
“We als want t make vides with a high educatinal value bth fr Chinese and freign learners fChinese characters. There will be a large number f vides, shwing the rigins f mdern and traditinal Chinese character,” Richard says.

Accrding t the Natinal Oceanic and Atmspheric Administratin (NOAA), a gvernment agency that studies the envirnment, this marks the strngest trnad activity in the first three mnths f any year since 1999. Previus years with a busy start have prduced high numbers f trnades thrughut the year.
Fr thse living in “Trnad Alley” frm west Texas all the way up t Nrth Dakta, springtime is trnad time. What exactly causes a trnad? Trnades frm when wet and war m air is caught under dry and cl air. When the warm air rises, it upsets the cl air, spinning the air int a funnel-like shape (漏斗形). The spinning air is fficially called a trnad nce it tuches the grund. These trnades can reach extremely high speeds, smetimes mre than 250 miles per hur!
Scientists try t measure the speed and damage f trnades using what is called the Fujita Scale, r F-scale. The scale ranges frm FO, with winds under 73 mph, t F5, with winds between 261 and 318 mph. Vilent trnades in the F4 and F5 grades smetimes last mre than an hur, and cause tremendus damage, ften destrying everything fr hundreds f miles. Frtunately, these accunt fr less than l percent f all trnades.
If the first three mnths f this year are any indicatin, there are mre trnades t cme. Remember, the best way t stay safe during a trnad is t find shelter in the basement (地下室) f a strng building, aviding windws. Experts warn against trying t escape a trnad in a car.
