Why d we find ugly animals s attractive? And what makes dd-lking creatures s cute?
Evlutin plays a rle. Accrding t Austrian zlgist Knrad Lrenz, human attractin t infantile (婴儿的) features, such as big eyes, large heads and sft bdies, is an evlutinary adaptatin that helps ensure that adults care fr their children, guaranteeing the survival f their species. Strange-lking animals such as blbfish, pugs, aye-ayes and bulldgs all share these infantile qualities that cause an affectinate respnse amng humans and an innate instinct t nurture and prtect. And these infantile characteristics increase a persn’s “prtective behavir, attentin and willingness t care” fr the individual and reduce the “likelihd f aggressin twards an infant”, says Marta Brgi, a researcher.
Ugly animals ften have ther value—sme like the blbfish r the naked mle rat, live in extreme envirnments that they have adapted t in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen t study these animals t understand whether their bilgy might prvide fresh insights that culd lead t treatments fr human health cnditins such as cancer, heart disease and neurdegenerative diseases.
But while many ugly creatures are exquisitely adapted t their life in the wild and can prvide enrmus benefits t the ecsystems they live in, they ften still dn’t get as much attentin as mre traditinally cute and cuddly animals. This can result in a bias (偏见) which leads t many f the less attractive species being verlked in terms f research.
There are culture-led ther factrs that als drive ur bsessin (痴迷) with ugly-cute animals. “The ugly-cute thing is very fashinable,” says Rwena Packer, a lecturer f animal behavir. This is partly driven by scial media, with many celebrities (名人) and influencers shwing ff pet pugs and French bulldgs n Instagram, she says.
But there are sme serius welfare cncerns arund this trend. Vets are urging peple nt t chse a flat-faced dg breed, because they suffer frm serius health prblems. Pugs and French bulldgs which have been selectively bred experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin infectins and eye diseases. S while gfy features such as bulging eyes and wrinkly faces may make us smile, we might want t recnsider ur bsessin with “ugly-cute” pets.
8.Accrding t Knrad Lrenz, what features in animals are attractive t humans?
A. Shiny clrs.B. Big eyes and large heads.
C. Unusual bdy shapes.D. Sft fur and large faces.

Glbally, the largest increases in flash drughts wuld be in Eurpe and the Amazn. Slwing emissins can reduce the risk significantly, but we fund flash drughts wuld still increase by abut 6% wrldwide under lw emissin cnditins.
12.What is the feature f flash drughts?
A. Seldm happen and greatly beneficial.
B. Frequently happen and lw risky.
C. Suddenly happen and highly destructive.
D. Regularly happen and slightly harmful.
13.Which f the fllwing statements may the authr agree with?
A. Crps and vegetatin die mre quickly during lng term drughts.
B. Slwing emissins can cmpletely slve the prblem f flash drughts.
C. In Eurpe crpland will suffer frm mre flash drughts by the end f this century.
D. Flash drughts wn't have any effect n fd prductin, energy, and water supplies.
14.What may be a factr that strengthens flash drughts?
A. Adequate rainfall. B. The warming climate.
C. The cld and wet weather. D. Lng-term drughts.
