Frm McDnald's t Snic, fast fd had a bad effect n my waistline and my budget. It was nthing t run t a drive-thrugh t pick up a cld drink r a quick bite t eat. It was s easy t use my card fr a small purchase. Fr me, I gt a lt f satisfactin frm fast fd.
One day I sat dwn and calculated that I was cnsuming a surprising $40 a week n fast fd. This was a lt f iced cffee, hamburgers and junk fd like that! Instead f reducing my guilty pleasures, I decided t give myself a strng budget t reduce my cnsumptin. Every Mnday I placed an envelpe with $20 in my purse. That was my fast fd budget fr the entire week. If there was anything left ver at the end f the week, it was up t me t save r spend the mney. If I spent all f the mney during the week, there were n mre fast fd stps that week.
The budget made me mre mindful f my purchases. Instead f purchasing a large drink frm Snic, I wuld purchase a small ne. It was still satisfying but nt nearly pricey. Instead f eating a whle meal, I wuld pick the part that I actually wanted. Many days, the thught f hanging n t the mney fr a special purpse meant mre t me than the instant satisfactin f fast fd. I never really felt unhappy because it was a cnscius chice t spend r save mney n each purchase.
Envelpe budget kept me hnest. I had a clear idea f hw much mney I spent n fast fd purchases each week. I started t bring my lunches mre ften t save mre mney fr the week. It was a fun challenge t see hw much I culd save every week.
Changing the way I spent n fast fd nt nly helped my budget, but imprved my weight. In the first mnth I was able t get rid f 5 punds by simply changing the way I spent n fast fd. Nw I am mre likely t bring my lunch than t buy it. I am nt upset, but empwered t make psitive chices t imprve my life.

I have nthing against the entertainment industry and celebrities. The prblem is that by idlizing the entertainment industry s much, we smetimes cmpletely frget abut the things that are truly imprtant and that are changing ur wrld. Yu prbably knw wh Lenard DiCapri is—a very talented American actr and film prducer. But then yu prbably dn’t knw wh Cri Bargmann is. Bargmann is a scientist wh is uncvering the causes f Alzheimer’s and autism, which have been unknwn fr years.
What I think is wrng is that DiCapri’s net wrth is $260 millin dllars, while Bargmann’s is less than $l millin dllars. DiCapri is definitely talented and has wrked hard t give us gd films, but Bargmann is wrking fr smething that can save thusands f humans wh are suffering. And just because ur sciety prefers t idlize the entertainment industry instead f science, she gets paid much less than she deserves.
But if it wuld benefit the wrld t invest all f ur time and attentin tward scientists, why dn’t we make scientists ur new “celebrities”?
First f all, we like being entertained. We lve pretty faces and easy-t-digest infrmatin. It’s easier t care abut simple stuff rather than scientific, cmplicated things. Anther reasn is that mst scientists dn’t like being in the sptlight. They’re mstly reserved and like t have privacy. They’re busy peple, which explains why they haven’t attracted the media the same way that perfrmers have. Als, peple have free will and the right t be interested in whatever they want t be.
