We first met Tm and Gee in the early days f ur marriage. Smene had been returning ur garbage cans t the garage each garbage day, and Jim and I had wndered wh. Then ne day we sptted him: an elderly man wh lived acrss the street.
I baked ckies and left them n a stl utside the garage with a thank-yu nte. When we gt hme frm wrk that day, a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was frm Tm and explained hw he had cme t walk the neighbrhd n garbage day, returning cans fr peple he barely knew. A few years after we’d mved in, Tm died. We phtcpied that letter and attached it t ne f ur wn fr Gee. We tld her hw special Tm had been t us. She wrte back and tld us she still talked t Tm every day. When Gee invited us ver t lk thrugh Christmas rnaments, I realized hw hard it must be t part with that bx, a piece f Tm.
These days, we’re piling up bxes f ur wn. We’re planning a mve. The huse that seemed s huge six years ag is filled t capacity with furniture and bks and tys and f curse peple. Farming is destrying the planet, but there culd be a much mre envirnmentally friendly way t feed urselves: using renewable energy t turn carbn dixide int fd. “This is becming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Slar Fds, a cmpany that is building the first cmmercial-scale factry that will be able t make fd directly frm CO2.
There can be n dubt that immediate attentin t find greener ways t grw fd is required. Cnventinal agriculture, including rganic farming, causes damage t the envirnment in many ways. It requires a lt f land, leading t habitat lss and defrestatin. It is als the surce f a third f all greenhuse gas emissins and releases ther pllutants. It isn’t very efficient, either. Crps typically transfrm less than 1 percent f light energy int usable bimass (生物量).
Instead, Slar Fds plans t avid phtsynthesis (光合作用) altgether, and grw bacteria that use hydrgen as their surce f energy. At the factry, renewable electricity will be used t split water t prduce hydrgen and xygen. The hydrgen will be added t large cntainers, where the bacteria grw, alng with CO2 and ammnia (氮气). The end result will be a yellw pwder called Slein.
Slein is made f bacterial cells and is up t 70 percent prtein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds f fds. “We are aiming at replacing animal-surced prteins, which we think have the highest envirnmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Cmpared with plant crps, Slein will use 100 times less water per kilgram f prtein prduced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2, accrding t Slar Fds. There are ther benefits, t: factries culd be situated anywhere in the wrld and prductin wn’t be affected by weather cnditins.
“With Slar Fds and ther cmpanies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era f agriculture,” says Drian Leger at Cnnectmix Bi in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbn curve as well as lead t imprved glbal fd supply security.”

Peple in lng-term pain are ften ffered antidepressants, but a review has fund little evidence t supprt using mst such drugs in this way.
It is estimated that abut 1 in 5 peple have nging pain, with a variety f causes and in varius lcatins. Hwever, treatment ptins are limited. While piid-based medicines (阿片类药物) are effective fr new-nset pain, they can be addictive when used lng term. Anti-inflammatry drugs (抗炎药物) can treat pain, but can damage rgans with extended use.
This may be why sme dctrs ffer antidepressants as treatment fr lng-term pain, even thugh the drugs generally aren’t licensed fr such use. Sme peple with chrnic (慢性的) pain are als depressed r anxius, s dctrs culd see the medicines as primarily helping with these cnditins. but antidepressants are als thught t have a separate painkilling effect. The mechanism is unknwn, but ne idea is that it stems frm antidepressants dampening inflammatin, at least in animal tests.
Ferreira and his clleagues cnducted a review with a detailed breakdwn f the existing evidence, making a thrugh analysis f the utcmes f 156 randmized trials invlving mre than 25. 000 participants. They lked at the effectiveness f eight types f antidepressant at treating 22 pain cnditins. The team discvered there was n gd evidence fr the effectiveness f mst f the drugs. Only ne class shwed evidence f effectiveness, but even this class reduced pain nly mdestly, by less than 10 pints n a scale f 0 t 100.
The analysis cmes t different cnclusins than a 2021 review by the Natinal Institute fr Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which said antidepressants were the nly class f medicines that dctrs shuld cnsider fr chrnic pain, althugh this shuld nly be after discussing the ptential benefits and harms. The difference in cnclusins may be because the latest analysis cnsidered each pain cnditin separately, says Ferreira.
Cathy Stannard, wh advised n the NICE guidelines, says the new review desn’t mean antidepressants shuld be ruled ut. “Sme peple will get a useful benefit and there’s n way f predicting wh. “But there is unlikely t be any “magic bullet” fr chrnic pain, says Stannard.
12.What cntributes t the use f antidepressants t treat lng-term pain?
A. They have a dramatic painkilling effect.
B. They have gained apprval fr treating it.
C. They are believed t pssess n side effects.
D. They are thught t be multifunctinal drugs.
13.What des the underlined wrd “dampening” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Wrsening. B. Stimulating. C. Relieving. D. Causing
14.Hw did Ferreira and his team carry ut the review?
A. By analyzing the results f previus studies.
B. By bserving patients’ reactins t antidepressants.
C. By cnducting interviews with ver 25, 000 participants.
D. By repeating the trials f antidepressants n participants.
15.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Antidepressants rarely ease pain
B. The painkilling effect f antidepressants
C. Hw t tackle lng-term painful cnditins
D. Antidepressants: “magic bullets” fr chrnic pain
