One f thse pprtunities might be the desire t live and wrk in the cuntry f that language. Hwever, reginal accents can increase sme difficulties, even fr cnfident language learners. Even within a small cuntry, accents can be varius. Fr example, when peple learn English, they tend t learn what is cmmnly referred t as the Queen’s English, Oxfrd English, BBC English, r Received Prnunciatin, namely RP. All f these are typical standard British accents. It was previusly believed that just 5% f the British ppulatin actually spke with an RP accent, but the mst recent studies suggest the true figure is even lwer — nly abut 3% f the ppulatin speaks in RP. (18) S, there are arund 40 different accents within the United Kingdm alne. Smetimes, even native speakers may find it challenging t understand a particularly strng accent. In such situatins, a helpful apprach is t plitely request the speakers t repeat what they said, perhaps at a slwer pace.

The first persn t receive a brain-mnitring device frm neurtechnlgy cmpany Neuralink can cntrl a cmputer cursr(光标) with his mind, Eln Musk, the firm’s funder, revealed this week. But researchers say that this is nt a majr feat — and they are cncerned abut the secrecy arund the device’s safety and perfrmance.

The Neuralink chip cntains 64 flexible plymer threads, prviding 1,024 sites fr recrding brain activity accrding t the cmpany’s study brchure. That is cnsiderably mre than Blackrck Neurtech’s BCIs, the nly ther single-neurn recrding system t have been implanted lng-term in humans. S the Neuralink device can imprve brain–machine cmmunicatin.
The cmpany has als prduced a surgical rbt fr inserting its device. But it has nt cnfirmed whether that system was used fr the first human implant. Details abut the first recipient are als scarce, althugh Neuralink’s vlunteer recruitment brchure says that peple with quadriplegia(四肢瘫痪者) stemming frm certain cnditins “may qualify”.
This week, Musk said n Spaces — an audi cmpnent f his scial-media platfrm X — that the vlunteer “seems t have made a full recvery, with n ill effects that we are aware f” and “is able t mve a muse arund the screen by just thinking”.
T researchers wrking n implanted neurtechnlgies, this achievement is underwhelming. Cntrlling a cmputer muse with ne’s thughts culd enable peple living with paralysis t regain sme independence and functinality. But it is a far cry frm Musk’s ambitins fr the Neuralink device. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking culd cmmunicate faster than a speed typist r auctineer,” Musk wrte last mnth n X. “That is the gal.”
Hwever, even mre imprtant at this stage, researchers say, is safety — f bth the device and the surgery. Sheth says he and ther researchers are in the dark abut the system’s first applicatin in the clinic.
28. Which ne is right abut Neuralink?

B. Neuralink is the first cmpany t start lng-term trials in humans.
C. Neuralink used a surgical rbt t insert its device fr the first human implant.
D. Neuralink has successfully implanted a BCI int a human.
29. What des the underlined wrd “scarce” in paragraph 4 mean?

C. He has an ambitius gal fr the Neuralink device.
D. He hlds a firm belief that Stephen Hawking culd speak faster.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Mind-reading devices are cming
B. Mind-reading devices are revealing the brain’s secrets
C. Neuralink brain chip: what scientists think f first human trial

根据第一段“The first persn t receive a brain-mnitring device frm neurtechnlgy cmpany Neuralink can cntrl a cmputer cursr(光标) with his mind, Eln Musk, the firm’s funder, revealed this week. (神经技术公司Neuralink的创始人埃隆·马斯克本周透露,第一个接受该公司大脑监测设备的人可以用意念控制电脑光标。)”和第二段“Musk annunced n 29 January that Neuralink had implanted a brain–cmputer interface (BCI) int a human fr the first time. 【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“But it is a far cry frm Musk’s ambitins fr the Neuralink device. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking culd cmmunicate faster than a speed typist r auctineer,” Musk wrte last mnth n X. (但这与马斯克对Neuralink设备的雄心相去甚远。“想象一下,如果斯蒂芬·霍金的交流速度比打字员或拍卖师还快,”马斯克上个月在X上写道。)”可知,马斯克期望Neuralink设备速度要更快,因此推断他是一位在神经科技方面特别有抱负的人。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“But researchers say that this is nt a majr feat — and they are cncerned abut the secrecy arund the device’s safety and perfrmance.(但研究人员表示,这并不是一项重大成就,他们担心该设备的安全性和性能的保密性。)”和最后一段“Hwever, even mre imprtant at this stage, researchers say, is safety — f bth the device and the surgery. Sheth says he and ther researchers are in the dark abut the system’s first applicatin in the clinic.(然而,研究人员说,在这个阶段更重要的是设备和手术的安全性。

Bred t be sweeter, tday’s cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used t but nt necessarily better. Amng fruit farmers, the wrd “quality” is nw rutinely used as a standard fr “high in sugar”, thugh firmness, clr and size are als cnsideratins. Mdern apple varieties, the scientists stressed, were n average sweeter than lder nes.
The sweetness f fruit depends nt just n hw it is bred but als n grwing cnditins, yield and harvest. The fragrance never develps in fruit that is harvested t early.

In a way, the rise f cnsistently sweeter fruit in ur lifetimes has been a victry f plant breeding. After all, it’s a rare persn wh wuld seek ut bitter grapes if they culd have sweet nes instead.
But the sweetness f mdern fruit is nt withut its prblems, especially fr peple with diabetes (糖尿病), wh have t reduce their intake f higher-sugar fruits. Fruit that is bred sweeter als tends t be lwer in the chemicals that make it healthy. Cnsidering health, maybe the real prblem with mdern fruit is that it has becme yet anther sweet thing in a wrld with sugar. Even grapefruits, which used t be quite bitter, are smetimes nw as sweet as ranges. If yu’ve never tasted a sur cherry, hw can yu fully appreciate a sweet ne?

根据最后一段中“But the sweetness f mdern fruit is nt withut its prblems, especially fr peple with diabetes (糖尿病), wh have t reduce their intake f higher-sugar fruits.
