Many f us share these kinds f verbal habits: pausing at certain mments, filling in sentences with extra wrds r qualifying statements t make them sund mre hnest.

These speech acts are called “verbal tee-ups”, accrding t a recent Wall Street Jurnal article. They are like cushins meant t sften bad r unpleasant news. Other verbal tee-ups include: “Dn’t take this the wrng way, but…”, r “Dn’t get mad, but…”.
Fr speakers, verbal tee-ups make it easier t say difficult things. They sund frmal and plite. But aren’t they dishnest?
Accrding t James W. Pennebaker, Psychlgy Department chair at the University f Texas at Austin, US, these phrases “are t frmalize scial relatins s yu dn’t have t reveal yur true self”, he tld The Wall Street Jurnal.
Hwever, Anne Curzan, prfessr f English at the University f Michigan, US, says that verbal tee-ups are a bit like traffic signals. “If we knw that we’re abut t say smething ptentially damaging, it can be nice t give the listener a mment t prepare fr the message,” she wrte in the article Verbal Tee-ups: A Mre Psitive Spin, published in The Chrnicle f Higher Educatin.
Curzan gives an example. Suppse she needs an extensin frm an editr because she can’t get her article dne n time. She might start her request with “I’m srry t have t ask…”, r “I understand if this isn’t pssible…”.
She culd just say: “I need an extensin”. But that desn’t “feel very plite”, Curzan nted. Instead, it’s “sudden” and desn’t “give the editr any chice”.
