A team f three students wn $700,000 this week fr using artificial intelligence (AI) t read passages frm an ancient papyrus scrll (纸草卷轴). The dcument is ne f the mre than 800 scrlls knwn as the Herculaneum papyri that were carbnized by the eruptin f Munt Vesuvius in 79 AD. Researchers discvered the passages in the 18th century, but attempts t read them prved in vain: Unflding them by hand nly caused them t fall apart.
That’s where the Vesuvius Challenge cmes in. Brent Seales, a cmputer scientist, and tw businessmen, Nat Friedman and Daniel Grss, launched the Vesuvius Challenge in March 2023, ffering mre than $1 millin in prize mney fr reaching a series f milestnes using “cmputer visin, machine learning and hard wrk”. Fr the biggest prize, the rganizers released high-reslutin CT scans f the scrlls and explained the cntest’s rules: Participants wuld need t decipher (破译) at least 85 percent f fur passages.
