When yu walk n a sandy beach, it takes mre energy than walking dwn a sidewalk—because the weight f yur bdy pushes int the sand. It turns ut that the same thing is true fr vehicles driving n rads.
“The weight f the vehicles creates a very shallw indentatin in the pavement—and it makes it such that it's cntinuusly driving up a very shallw hill,” said Jeremy Gregry, a scientist at M. I. mdeled with his teammates hw much energy culd be saved-and greenhuse gases avided—by simply hardening the natin's rads and highways.
And they fund that hardening 10 percent f the natin's rads every year culd prevent emissins equal t 440 megatns f carbn dixide ver the next 5 decades—that amunt is equal t hw much CO, yu'd spare the planet by keeping a billin barrels f il in the grund r by grwing 7 billin trees fr a decade. It reduces 0.5% f prjected transprtatin emissins ver that time perid.
As fr hw t harden rads, Gregry says yu culd cmbine small amunts f certain fiber with high technlgy int paving materials. Or yu culd pave with specially-made cncrete, which is harder than rdinary cnstructin materials.
This system culd als be a way t shave carbn emissins withut sme f the usual barriers. “Usually, when it cmes t reducing emissins in the transprtatin department, yu're talking abut changing plicies related t vehicles and als driver behavir, which invlves millins and millins f peple—as ppsed t changing the way we design and preserve ur pavements. That's just n the rder f thusands f peple wh are wrking in transprtatin agencies.” And when it cmes t imprving ur streets and highways-thse agencies are where yu might say the rubber meets the rad.

根据第三段“And they fund that hardening 10 percent f the natin's rads every year culd prevent emissins equal t 440 megatns f carbn dixide ver the next 5 decades—that amunt is equal t hw much CO, yu'd spare the planet by keeping a billin barrels f il in the grund r by grwing 7 billin trees fr a decade. It reduces 0.5% f prjected transprtatin emissins ver that time perid.(他们发现,每年对全国10%的道路进行硬化,可以在未来50年内防止相当于440兆吨二氧化碳的排放——这个数量相当于你将10亿桶石油留在地下或在十年内种植70亿棵树,就可以使地球免受多少二氧化碳。它减少了该时间段内预计交通排放的0.5%)”可推知,作者通过列数字展开第三段。故选C。

In a wrld where nearly 6 millin fingerprint recrds f gvernment emplyees are stlen in ne cmputer hack(非法侵入), and here millins f peple are victims f identity theft every year, the next step in cyber security may well be mapping yur brain.
Researchers at Binghamtn University, State University f New Yrk are wrking n a bimetric(生物特征识别的)system that recrds hw yur brain reacts t certain images. With a little mre plishing, the scientists’ brainchild culd becme the way yu get int a safe depsit bx, yur ffice r past scanners at the airprt. It culd replace the passwrd fr yur nline banking, yur email r yur scial media accunts.
They started their prject by measuring the brain waves f 30 subjects. The subjects were fitted with a cap that had 30 electrdes(电极)attached t it, and then shwn varius images and symbls — celebrity faces, wrds, pictures f fd — n a cmputer screen in 200-millisecnd bursts. The brain’s reactin was recrded.
The idea is that every time a persn needs t use a “passwrd”, he r she ges thrugh the same prcedure, and the results are matched with their firsttime reactin. If the “brainprint” is cracked — like what happened with the fingerprint recrds — then the system is merely reset by running anther set f images and cllecting a different set f brain waves. “Even if that was stlen, yu culd just cancel it and recrd ne t smething else”, says prfessr Laszl.
Laszl and her team have shwn that their system can be 100 percent accurate. S ne f the mre difficult parts f making the system practical already has been vercme. Nw, they’re spending much time recrding accurate brainprints with as few as three electrdes, which culd make recrding in the future as easy as wearing a pair f special glasses. They’re als wrking with cheaper materials and different methds t see if they can bring the cst dwn.
    12. What des the underlined wrd “brainchild” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
    A. The brain functin.
    B. The fingerprint recrd.
    C. The bimetric system.
    D. The nline passwrd.
    13. Why were the images and symbls shwn t the subjects?
    A. T create their brainprints.
    B. T check the brain’s reactin.
    C. T match brainprints with pictures.
    D. T cnnect brain waves t electrdes.
    14. What will happen when a brainprint fails?
    A. A spare ne will be ready befrehand.
    B. A new ne will be set again.
    C. The users’ security will be leaked.
    D. The fingerprint recrd will replace it.
    15. What are the researchers ding with the prgram nw?
    A. Making it user-friendly.
    B. Imprving its accuracy.
    C. Recrding mre brainprints.
    D. Increasing the number f electrdes.
C 13. A 14. B 15. A

The brain’s reactin was recrded.”(受试者戴上一个有30个电极的帽子,然后在电脑屏幕上以20毫秒的速度显示出各种各样的图象和符号--名人的脸、文字、食物的图片,大脑的反应被记录下来。) 故选A。
根据第四自然段“If the "brainprint" is cmprmised --- like what happened with the fingerprint recrds --- then the system is merely reset by running anther set f images and cllecting a different set f brain waves.”(如果“脑印”受损——就像指纹记录那样——那么只需运行另一组图像并收集一组不同的脑电波,就可以重置系统。)
根据最后一段“Nw, they’re spending much time recrding accurate brainprints with as few as three electrdes, which culd make recrding in the future as easy as wearing a pair f special glasses. They're als wrking with cheaper materials and different methds t see if they can bring the cst dwn.”(现在,他们只需要三个电极就可以记录下精确的脑印,这使得在未来记录起来就像戴上一副特殊的眼镜一样简单,他们也在使用更便宜的材料和不同的方法,看看是否能降低成本现在。)
