My earliest reading memry takes me back t being five years ld, sitting in my grandfather’s czy study. He wuld read t me frm his French-translated cpy f Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Bk. I was s familiar with the stries that I culd crrect him wrd-fr-wrd if he tried t change smething.
Grwing up, my favrite bk was Ray Bradbury’s Smething Wicked This Way Cmes. It was a treasure fr an imaginative and lnely child like me. The bk was filled with magical elements: a magical carusel, mnsters, and the charming scent f autumn leaves lying in the sun. The language was as crisp and sweet as an Octber apple, awakening in me a deep passin fr wrds and the magic they culd bring ut. I’ve reread it regularly and it never fails t satisfy me.
In my adult years, I revisited Emily Brntë’s Wuthering Heights. When I first read it at 16, I perceived it as a lve stry. Hwever, rereading it as an adult, I was struck by hw different it seemed t me, and hw much f the humur I’d missed. Nw I lve its petry. And the lve stry nt nly exists between the characters but between Brntë and the Nrth Yrk Mrs.
James Jyce’s Ulysses was a bk I came back t after 40 years. Initially, at 15, I fund it ugly, depressing, and dull, and I hated it. It tk me fur decades t return t it, and this time, I fund myself understanding and beginning t appreciate it. I culd see the details, the mythic parallels, the references t different writing styles, and the grundbreaking technique.
Thugh sme exceptinal bks can develp and grw alngside us, thers fall by the wayside. I’ve revisited s many childhd favurites nly t find the magic gne, but I’m usually happy t leave the bk behind. I’ve taken frm it what I need.

There are tw distinctive types f electric buses making their way alng Nanjing Xi Lu, ne f Shanghai’s busiest rads. The first is a fleet f blue trlleybuses that serve bus rute number 20, a line set up by a British-run transprt cmpany in 1928. They use ples t receive electricity frm wires verhead and have kept the rute running in this way fr nearly a century. But while the histric electric buses are a reminder f Eurpe’s past technlgical innvatin, the new buses traveling alngside them are symbls f China’s cntemprary net-zer ambitin. These mdern electric buses pwered by lithium batteries (锂电池) , were intrduced in Shanghai in 2014. They ffer a smther ride, especially during starts and stps. Widely used acrss China, these buses are key t the cuntry’s EV transitin and are influencing the glbal shift twards green transprtatin.
The mst recent data available shws that China in 2018 was still the secnd largest surce f carbn dixide emissins in the glbal transprt sectr, respnsible fr 11%, and behind nly the United States, which accunted fr 21%. After arund tw decades f gvernment supprt, China nw basts the wrld’s largest market fr e-buses, making up mre than 95% f glbal stck. At the end f 2022, China’s Ministry f Transprt annunced that mre than three-quarters (77% r 542, 600) f all urban buses in the cuntry were new energy vehicles. The speed f this transitin was remarkable.
S far, hwever, the Chinese cities with the mst successful e-bus intrductin — such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai — all have mderate weather and are relatively flat. T take its e-bus campaign t the next level, China faces challenges. Fr ne thing, it is difficult t bring fleets t cities such as Hng Kng, which — like Lndn — have duble-deckers. These tw-streyed vehicles are “very hard” t electrify, because they are heavier, use mre energy, and s need bigger batteries, reducing the number f passengers they can carry. Cld weather is a prblem, t, as it can make a battery’s charging time lnger and its range shrter. The reasn China has nt achieved 100% electrificatin fr its buses is its nrthern regins, which have cld winters, says Xue Lulu, a transprtatin expert at the Wrld Resurces Institute China.

B. The prgress f China in reducing CO2 emissins.
C. The different emissin levels f China and the USA.
D. The need fr mre gvernment supprt in e-bus market.
10. What factr cntributes t the slw adptin f electric buses in China’s nrthern regins?
A. Pr winter weather cnditins.B. Lack f transprtatin experts.
C. Shrt charging time f the battery.D. Heavier and bigger bus bdies.
11. Which clumn is the text mst prbably taken frm?
A. Wrklife.B. Culture.C. Travel.D. Earth.

As I write this a Bb Seger sng is stuck in my head. It’s been playing n repeat ever since I heard it in a mvie. I hated it a lt when it first came ut years ag, and I still really hate it nw. Interestingly, earwrms aren’t all bad. Research indicates that they can enhance ur ability t recall past events, as the repetitive nature f the sng strengthens ur memry.
There are several strategies t get rid f earwrms. Listening t the entire sng can help reslve the unfinished lp. Alternatively, distracting yurself with anther meldy r engaging in activities that require fcus can als be effective. Chewing gum r eating smething crunchy may interrupt the sng playing in yur head. Despite these strategies, smetimes the best apprach is t simply accept the presence f the earwrm and let it fade away naturally. In my case, trying t actively rid myself f the sng nly made it mre persistent. It seems patience is key when dealing with these stubbrn musical guests in ur minds.
12. What is an earwrm?
A. A type f insect that affects hearing.B. A sng that gets stuck in yur head.
C. A medical cnditin related t the ears.D. An element missing in a sng.
13. Which f the fllwing statement is true abut earwrms?
A. They cannt be cntrlled r stpped.B. They indicate underlying illness.
C. They nly ccur in certain individuals.D. They are nrmal phenmena.
14. What benefit can be expected f earwrms?
A. T enhance memry recall f earlier incidents.
B. T increase musical creativity and imaginatin.
C. T expand penness t new experiences.
D. T imprve fcus and cncentratin.
15. Hw des the authr feel abut earwrms?
