In summer the air in Seville is sweet with the scent f ranges. They lk pretty n the trees but nce they fall, the streets becme sticky with juice and black with flies. The 5,700 tnnes f bitter fruit the city’s 48,000 trees depsit n the streets are a hazard fr pedestrians (行人) and a headache fr the city’s cleaning department.
Nw a prject has been launched t prduce an entirely different kind f juice frm the unwanted ranges: electricity. Seville is running a pilt prject t use the methane (甲烷) prduced as the fruit ferments (发酵) t generate clean electricity.
Emasesa, the city water cmpany, will use 35 tnnes f fruit t generate clean energy t run a water purificatin plant. The ranges will g t a facility that generates electricity frm rganic matter. As they ferment, the methane captured will be used t drive the generatr.
“The juice is made up f very shrt carbn chains and the energetic perfrmance f these carbn chains during the fermentatin prcess is very high,” said Benign López, the head f Emasesa’s envirnmental department.
While the aim fr nw is t use the energy t run the water purificatin plants, the ultimate gal is t feed extra electricity back int the grid (电网). The team behind the prject says the ptential is huge. Trials have shwn that a tnne f ranges will prduce 50kWh, enugh t pwer five hmes fr a day, and they calculate that if all the city’s ranges were recycled and the energy put back int the grid, 73,000 hmes culd be pwered.
“Emasesa is nw a rle mdel in Spain fr sustainability and the fight against climate change,” said Juan Espadas Cejas, the mayr f Seville. “The water purificatin plants cnsume almst 40% f the energy t prvide the city with drinking water. This prject will help us t reach ur targets fr reducing emissins, energy self sufficiency and the circular ecnmy.”

“I didn’t expect this. These anti bird spikes are meant t deter birds, they are suppsed t scare them ff, but n the cntrary, the birds just use them.” Kees Meliker, the directr f the Natural Histry Museum Rtterdam, tld The Guardian.
One particularly impressive magpie nest was discvered in the curtyard f a hspital in Antwerp, Belgium. It was made up f arund 1,500 anti-bird spikes, mst f which seemed t be psitined with the sharp pint utwards, as prtectin against invaders. After discvering it, researchers checked the rf and cnfirmed that arund 50 meters f anti-bird spike strips had been ripped ff the building, leaving nly the glue used t fix them in place.
