We live in a twn with three beaches. There are tw parts less than 10 minutes’ walk frm hme where neighbrhd children gather t play. Hwever, what my children want t d after schl is pick up a screen — any screen — and stare at it fr hurs. They are nt alne. Tday’s children spend an average f fur and a half hurs a day lking at screens, split between watching televisin and using the Internet.
In the past few years, an increasing number f peple and rganisatins have begun cming up with plans t cunter this trend. A cuple f years ag film-maker David Bnd realised that his children, then aged five and three, were attached t screens t the pint where he was able t say “chclate” int his three-year-ld sn’s ear withut getting a respnse. He realised that smething needed t change, and, being a Lndn media type, appinted himself “marketing directr frm Nature”. He dcumented his jurney as he set abut treating nature as a brand t be marketed t yung peple. The result was Prject Wild Thing, a film which charts the birth f the Wrld Netwrk, a grup f rganisatins with the cmmn gal f getting children ut int nature.
“Just five mre minutes utdrs can make a difference,” David Bnd says. “There is a lt f really interesting evidence which seems t be suggesting that if children are inspired up t the age f seven, then being utdrs will be n habit fr life.” His wn children have gt int the habit f playing utside nw: “We just send them ut int the garden and tell them nt t cme back in fr a while.”

Befre humans stred memries as zeres and nes, we turned t digital devices f anther kind — preserving knwledge n the surface f fingers and palms.
When Mga Caves was uncvered in 1900, an aging drawing was lifted frm a trve f religius manuscripts. The drawing illustrates a mnemnic (助记符号) system, a way f prjecting knwledge nt the hands s it can be studied, memrized, and stred in a pcket. Arund the same time this mnemnic was made, a mnk named Bede halfway arund the wrld was develping a different system f manual knwledge. These tw systems are perhaps the earliest examples f manual mnemnics.
Beginning rughly twelve hundred years ag, we started using the hand itself as a prtable (便携) place f knwledge, a place t stre whatever tended t slip ur mental grasp. The hand became an all-purpse memry machine.
In different times and places, hands prvided mnemnic maps f sund. As early as the thirteenth century, Chinese schlars were prjecting syllable charts (音节图表) nt the palms and fingers. The s-called “Guidnian hand” wes its name t the eleventh-century Italian music teacher, Guid d’Arezz. Arranging the different pitches in a scale nt the jints, he develped this technique t help students learn “unheard meldy mst easily and crrectly”. Other thinkers in Eurpe, perhaps inspired by Guid, develped systems fr learning the sunds f language.
Then questins arise. First, what makes the hand s ppular as a mnemnic prp? A large part f the answer, surely, invlves prtability. The hands are always, well, ready t hand. A further advantage stems frm hw hand mnemnics ffer bth visual and kinesthetic (动觉的) rutes t memry: They are bth seen and felt.
It’s als hard t determine when and why hand mnemnics faded ut. Hand mnemnics are still used t teach the “right-hand rule” in physics classrms and remain especially ppular in medicine. Tday, we increasingly stre ur “thughts” in virtual realms (领域), but we smetimes still reach fr that riginal “digital” repsitry (存储库) in ur pckets.
8. What d we learn abut the tw earliest examples f mnemnics?
A. Bede made a hand mnemnic in Mga Caves.
B. They are the same system f manual knwledge.
C. The drawing was uncvered n the fingers and palms.
D. The drawing frm Mga Caves illustrates a mnemnic system.
9. What is Paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. Human hands mapped sund charts.
B. Human hands played a rle in sund mnemnics.
C. Guid helped his students learn unheard meldy.
D. Schlars prjected syllable charts nt the palms and fingers.
10. Why des the hand gain ppularity as a mnemnic prp?
A. The hand is always available fr use.
B. The hand can feel what peple memrize.
C. Fingers can easily be marked with characters.
D. Hand mnemnics help memrize visible things.
11. What’s the authr’s attitude twards the future f hand mnemnics?
A. Psitive.B. Pessimistic.C. Uncertain.D. Indifferent.
D
When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents, mst f them prudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind f misses the pint.
Mre ften than nt, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this definitin f accents is limiting and culd give rise t prejudice. Funnily enugh, in terms f the language study, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that define ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s pintless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect (方言), t. In the field f language study, a dialect is a versin f a language that is characterized by its variatins f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr instance,” Yu gt eat r nt? “(meaning “Have yu eaten?” ) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause a standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw cnceptin f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne.
Language differences like these prvide insights int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is a distinct part f ne’s identity. Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.
12. What des the authr think f his/ her friends’ respnse in paragraph 1?
A. It reflects their self cnfidence.
B. It reflects their language levels.
C. It misses the pint f cmmunicatin.
D It misses the real meaning f accents.
13 Why des the authr use the example f Singapre Oral English?
A. T justify the use f dialects.
B. T shw the diversity f dialects.
C. T crrect a grammatical mistake.
D. T highlight a traditinal apprach.
14. What des the authr recmmend us t d in the last paragraph?
A. Learn t speak with yur lcal dialect.
B. Seek fr an fficial definitin f accents.
C. Appreciate the value f accents and dialects.
D. Distinguish ur lcal languages frm thers’.
15. What can be a suitable title fr this passage?

B. Accents Enhance Our Identities
