Our teacher typically assigned daily hmewrk, which wuld be recited in class the fllwing day. On mst days, ur grades were based n ur ral answers t hmewrk questins.
Mrs Ttten usually walked up and dwn the rws f desks requesting answers frm student after student in the rder the questins had appeared n ur hmewrk sheets. She wuld start either at the frnt r the back f the classrm and wrk twards the ther end.
Since I was seated near the middle f abut 35 students, it was easy t figure ut which questins I might have t answer. This particular time, I had cmpleted my usual tw r three prblems accrding t my calculatins.
What I failed t expect was that several students were absent, which threw ff my estimate. As Mrs Ttten made her way frm the beginning f the class, I desperately tried t determine which maths prblem I wuld get. I tried t wrk it ut befre she gt t me, but I had brain freeze and culdn’t functin.
When Mrs Ttten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d gt fr prblem N.14.“I …I didn’t get anything, “I answered, and my face felt warm.
“Crrect,” she said.
It turned ut that the crrect answer was zer.
What did I learn that day? First, always d all yur hmewrk. Secnd, in real life it isn’t always what yu say but hw yu say it that matters. Third, I wuld never make it as a mathematician.

“This finding is the first demnstratin that the smell f cean plastics causes animals t eat them, ” said Dr Kenneth J. Lhmann, wh tk part in the study. “It’s cmmn t find lggerhead turtles with their digestive systems fully r partially blcked because they’ve eaten plastic materials. There are als increasing reprts f sea turtles that have becme ill and stranded n the beach due t their ingestin(摄食) f plastic.”
Accrding t the researchers, areas f the cean with dense cncentratins f plastic may trick turtles and ther marine animals int thinking that there is an abundant fd surce. “Once these plastics are in the cean, we dn’t have a gd way t remve them r prevent them frm smelling like fd,” said Lhmann.

A Blessing Frm A Hmeless Persn
On the way back frm wrk every evening, mre ften than nt, there wuld be a hmeless man standing at the exit f the freeway. He seemed t be in his late 40s, but was prbably a little yunger. Althugh wearing ill-fitting clthes and a mismatched pair f shes, he seemed neither scruffy nr glmy. With a huge grin highlighting his face, he always waved at every car and smetimes almst danced, which made the thick mustache appear “stylish” and even adrable.
Every day after wrk I wuld remember t gather any spare change, and put it aside t give him if I saw him. A feeling f jy wuld cme ver me every time I caught sight f him while cming dwn the ramp. He did have that effect. I’d quickly rll dwn my windw and give him the cins. Occasinally the red light wuld be n fr a minute and we wuld ask each ther abut ur day. His answer wuld always be the same—“I’m blessed!”I knew what his answer was ging t be every time, yet I wuld still ask just as if his wrds culd wrk their magic n me. It amazed me that even in his situatin f being hmeless he was s psitive, and his answer wuld always remind me hw blessed I was: a single mther f fur amazing kids, with a place t call hme and a jb t prvide fr my family.
One day I was called int my bss’s ffice and infrmed that I was being laid ff due t the depressing ecnmy. This came as a nasty shck fr a single mther whse big family survived n this salary. A feeling f helplessness and grief engulfed me, then fllwed by endless wrry. Fr the rest f that day, all I culd think f was “Hw am I ging t prvide fr my kids? Hw am I ging t pay rent?
