“Leftver rast ptates? There’s n such thing!” shuted peple n scial media when I shared a suggestin fr using up remaining ptates. This respnse is cmmn whenever I prpse ideas fr ingredients(食材) cnsidered “delicius” r a treat: wine, Easter eggs and cream. One persn’s trash is anther persn’s treasure, and all that—but the way we handle leftvers has t change. Because f my wrk creating recipes, I am cnstantly dealing with leftver fd. I live alne, wrk frm hme and enjy the challenge f transfrming leftvers int new culinary delights.
During lckdwn, I witnessed in peple a grwing understanding f having t make d with what was already in the cupbards, fridge and freezer. This led t an increasing cnfidence arund making substitutins and understanding fd-safety issues(such as the difference between “best befre” and “use by”). I learned everything I knw abut fd safety during my prfessinal life.
While sharing fd with neighbrs, friends and the wider cmmunity is ne way t deal with remaining ingredients, managing randm bits and pen packets requires a different apprach. S in May 2022, I started a series n scial media called Rllver Leftvers, shwcasing daily shrt vides f my hme cking. Simple cncepts such as refreshing rck-hard bread, freezing leftver chips r creating a “clear ut the fridge” tray bake gained millins f views—a much bigger audience than I wuld expect fr anything using tricky methds r fancy ingredients.
Use yur imaginatin and trust yurself, and yu’ll discver that leftvers can be a jy, nt a chre. And if yu find yu have the leftvers f a great big turkey but are fed up with the sight f it, r yu have mre cranberry sauce than yu culd pssibly eat alne, why nt try jining frces with neighbrs r friends? Nt s much bring a bttle as bring a laf, because a pst-Christmas leftvers sandwich is truly the best bite f the year. Isn’t it?

“A mth(飞蛾) t a flame” is ften used t indicate an inescapable attractin, yet it is a strange example f animal behavir that cntinues t cnfuse peple tday. Scientists have raised a number f theries ver the years t explain why. One hlds that insects flying at night are fllwing their nature t fly tward the brightest spt in their field f visin, which they mistake fr the sky. Anther suggests that insects are trying t warm themselves with the heat prduced by the light. The mst ppular thery, thugh, is that insects are cnfusing lights with the mn r ther celestial bdies(天体) that they nrmally use t navigate(导航).
T find ut the real reasn, the team carried ut a first set f experiments in an insect flight area. The researchers used eight high-speed infrared(红外线) cameras equipped with mtin-capture technlgies t track 30 insects frm three mth and tw dragnfly species. They als flew lab-raised insects frm six different insect rders that were t small fr mtin-capture technlgy, including fruit flies and hneybees, t make sure different insects all shwed similar respnses t light. Wrking with c-authr Pabl Allen f the Cuncil n Internatinal Educatinal Exchange in Mnteverde, Csta Rica, the researchers put heavy cameras, lights and tripds in tw field sites t gather behaviral data frm insects in the wild.
The team was able t cnfirm that insects were nt beelining t the light but rather circling it as they tilted(倾斜) in an attempt t turn their backs tward it. This behavir, knwn as a “drsal light respnse”, nrmally helps insects t remain in an unchanging path f flight that is prperly lined t the hrizn(地平线). Artificial light that arrives frm a pint surce causes them t fly in unpredictable patterns as they try t turn their backs t what they are mistaking fr the sky.
Nw research might have finally slved the mystery mentined first: artificial light cnfuses insects’ ability t turn themselves t the hrizn, cnfusing their sense f what is up and dwn and causing them t fly in circles.
28.Which thery abut a mth t a flame is accepted by mst peple?
A.They fllw their nature t fly.B.They are blind t artificial light.
C.They mistake artificial light fr celestial bdies.D.They are attracted by the warmth f artificial light.
29.What’s the authr’s purpse in using the figures in paragraph 2?
A.T shw the study is cmprehensive.B.T intrduce the purpse f the study.
C.T estimate the cst f the research.D.T stress the challenge faced by the researchers.
30.What des the underlined wrd “beelining” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A.Flying slwly.B.Sticking.C.Respnding.D.Ging straight.
31.What benefit can insects get frm “drsal light respnse”?
A.They can fly beynd the hrizn.B.They can fllw a steady flight path.
C.They can turn their backs tward lights.D.They can circle the light surce upside dwn.
    D
Researchers at the Indian Institute f Technlgy(IIT) Madras have been wrking n a fascinating new way t identify peple: using the ways f their breath. This idea culd change hw we unlck ur phnes and access secure places.
The key t this technlgy lies in the way we breathe ut. Every persn has a unique way f breathing air, which creates specific turbulence(涡流) patterns. The IIT Madras team, led by Prf. Mahesh Panchagnula, has develped a methd f catching these unique patterns and using them as a bimetric(生物特征识别的) signature, similar t hw fingerprints are used tday.
They cnducted tests with breath samples frm 94 peple and fund that their system culd crrectly cnfirm the persn’s identity with an impressive accuracy f 97%. Hwever, when it came t identifying smene withut knwing wh they were befrehand, the accuracy was arund 50%. This means the technlgy is great at cnfirming if smene is wh they claim t be, but it still needs imprvement in recgnizing peple withut any prir infrmatin. What makes this research exciting is its ptential beynd just unlcking phnes. It culd play a significant rle in persnalized medicine. Since the way we breathe can give insights int ur health, this technlgy culd help dctrs tailr treatments t individual patients mre effectively.
In a similar study at Kyushu University in Japan, researchers develped an artificial system that identifies peple based n hw their breath smells. This system shwed a high accuracy rate f 97.8% in identifying individuals. Hwever, this methd currently requires peple t fast(禁食)fr six hurs befre testing, indicating that it still needs t be imprved t be mre practical fr everyday use.
These advancements in using human breath fr identificatin are nt just abut adding anther cl feature t ur smartphnes. They represent a significant step frward in bimetric technlgy, which culd have far-reaching implicatins in security, medicine, and persnal technlgy. This research at IIT Madras and Kyushu University is pineering a new way f using the unique patterns f ur breath fr identificatin purpses, ptentially revlutinizing(变革) hw we interact with technlgy and receive medical care.
32.What makes the new technlgy pssible accrding t paragraph 2?
A.The distinctive breath smells.B.The unique patterns f breath.
C.The different patterns f fingerprints.D.The speed f taking in air.
33.What des the experiment by Kyushu University imply?
A.T eat n fd fr 6 hurs is practical in everyday life.
B.T eat fast is a basic requirement fr a higher accuracy rate.
C.The system is wrkable and will sn appear n the market.
D.Breath smells affected by fd can decrease the accuracy rate.
34.Hw can the system by the IIT Madras team affect peple?
A.It helps raise peple’s awareness f health.B.It will let peple better understand their breath.
C.It makes unlcking ur phnes mre easily.D.It will intrduce new ways t develp medicine.
35.What can be the best title fr the text?
A.Shuld We Still Use Fingerprints t Unlck Our Phne?
B.Fingerprint Patterns Can Identify Breath Types Easily
C.A Breath “Fingerprint” Culd Be Used t Unlck Yur Phne
D.Which Unlcking Methd Is Mre Secure, Breath r Fingerprint?
