    Ⅱ. Grammar and Vcabulary
    Sectin A
Directins: After reading the passage belw, fill in the blanks t make the passage cherent and grammatically crrect. Fr the blanks with a given wrd, fill in each blank with the prper frm f the given wrd; fr the ther blanks, use ne wrd that best fits each blank.
Bb’s prblems began during his frmative years. His parents gt divrced when he was yung, and neither f his parents wanted t raise him r his brther and sister, s he ___1___ (bring) up by a fster family chsen by a scial wrker in the cmmunity.
Unfrtunately, his fster father was a strict authritarian and ften beat him. Bb rebelled against this strict upbringing, and by the time he was eight years ld, he ___2___ (run) wild, stealing frm shps and playing truant. When he reached adlescence, smetime arund his thirteenth birthday, he had already appeared in curt several times, charged ___3___ juvenile crimes. The judge blamed his fster parents, ___4___ (explain) that children needed respnsible parents and guardians wh wuld lk after them prperly. The fster father didn’t agree with the judge and bjected t this, pinting ut that Bb’s tw brthers and sister were well-adjusted children wh behaved at hme and wrked well at schl.
This has raised sme interesting questins abut the mdern family system. ___5___ it is true that parents shuld nt be t lenient with children by letting them d ___6___ they want, ___7___ t ver-prtective by sheltering them frm the realities f life, it is als true that they shuld nt be t strict. It has als highlighted the disadvantages f the mdern nuclear family ___8___ the child has nly its mther and father t rely n r the single-parent family, in which the mther r father has t struggle particularly hard ___9___ (supprt) their dependents.
In fact, many peple believe that we ___10___ return t traditinal family values and the extended family: extensive research has shwn that children frm these families are generally better behaved and have a better chance f success in later life.
    Sectin B
Directins: Cmplete the fllwing passage by using the wrds in the bx. Each wrd can nly be used nce. Nte that there is ne wrd mre than yu need.
“Dealing with mney is a basic life skill”
Why financial transactins are abut relatinships and why the
quality f the relatinship is mre imprtant than the transactin itself.
British psychlgist, William Blm, has lng argued that sciety wuld benefit if mney flwed mre freely-if, fr example, peple regularly give part f their salaries r prfits t charity.
When yu say, “Mney shuld flw mre freely,” what d yu mean?
“There are tw metaphrs that I like t use fr mney. One is the energy f the envirnment and human nature. Mney represents a(n) ___11___ f these energies; it’s a materialized frm f energy. The ther metaphr is water. If yu lk at water, it can be still and plluted r, nce the dams are pened, it has the ability t ___12___ itself. Healthy energy flws in the way rich peple shuld allw their mney t flw. If they are gd, they will knw hw t give.”
    Mney still isn’t flwing freely.
A lt f it is dammed up in banks and in the hands f a small percentage f extremely wealthy individuals. “We have t build a sciety in which we are nt threatened by each ther. The gap between the rich and the pr ___13___ scial cnnectin and harmny. The Baby Bmers (婴儿潮一代) are t cmfrtable fr t lng. Nw they have t ask themselves what their plitics are, because life is plitical. This is the time fr all f us t ___14___ plitically.”
Hw can we deal with mney in a healthier way?
“When it cmes t mney, there is a lt f naiveté. Children need t be taught in schl that dealing with mney is a basic life skill. They need t be able t read a bank statement in a(n) ___15___ way. When a transactin takes place, this means ___16___ pausing t say, ‘This exchange affects me in this and this way.’ We are ften in t much f a hurry t realize that. We als frget that transactins are first and fremst abut relatinships. The quality f that relatinship is mre imprtant than the transactin itself. That’s why Beduins (游牧民族贝都因人) always share a cup f tea when they d business tgether. They understand the need t ___17___ their relatinship with thers.”
Anther frm f flw is giving. Can that be a kind f spiritual practice?
“Humans are paradxical beings. It is pssible t have pure ___18___ and t get satisfactin as a by-prduct frm yur actins. There is the classic idea that giving away mney brings a sense f safety and satisfactin. And it des. Being alive in this universe cmes frm the ___19___ that yu’re part f a flw in the universe. Peple think highly f altruism (舍己为人), giving away mney t smene wh cannt see yu. Dnating mney t charity is nt just abut the material effect but it als allws yu t pay attentin t what causes yu’re supprting. It’s healthy t give withut thinking f the material ____20____. Mney is neutral, like language. It’s all abut the way in which it is used.”
    Ⅲ. Reading Cmprehensin
    Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
A cure fr the future in the past?
Fr ver fifty years, the peple f Britain have relied n the welfare state t make sure they have adequate health services. But nw the Natinal Health Service is sick. Gvernment ___21___ and underfunding are frcing hspitals t clse, and waiting lists fr treatment are getting lnger. Under such circumstances, it is n surprise that mre peple are turning t private (but expensive) healthcare.
Fr sme, hwever, there are ___22___. They are turning their back n mdern pills, tablets and resrting t ther cnventinal medicine. It seems paradxical, but in an age f micrchips and high technlgy, traditinal medicine, the ld-fashined cures that ur grandparents relied n, is making a ___23___.
    Cnsider these case studies:
Maude is 76 years ld and has been suffering frm arthritis fr almst ten years. “The pain in my jints was almst ___24___, and my dctr referred me t a surgen at the Lndn Hspital. I was tld that I needed ___25___, but wuld need t wait fr at least tw years befre I culd have the peratin. In ___26___, I started having massage sessins. T my surprise, these were very therapeutic, and while they didn’t cure the disrder, they did ___27___ it t sme extent”.
Rn is 46. His high-pwered city jb was ___28___ fr a series f stress-related illnesses, and the drugs he tk didn’t wrk well n the nervus strain. “I read abut ___29___ which invlve the whle persn rather than the individual symptms, but I had always dubted abut such kind f medicine fr all diseases. Hwever, my friend ___30___ a dietician wh tld me that part f my prblem was diet-related. Basically, the fd I was eating was ___31___ t my disrder. She gave me a list f fds that wuld prvide the right vitamins and minerals t keep me in gd health. At the same time, she advcated a mre ___32___ lifestyle-running, swimming, that kind f thing. I’ m a bit f a cuch ptat, and this kind f lifestyle I had lived was ___33___ the prblem. Nw I feel great!”
S is there still a place in ur lives fr mdern medicine? While it is true that sme infectins and viruses may be ___34___ by turning t traditinal medicine, mre serius illnesses such as cancer need mre extreme measures. We d need ur health service at these times, and we shuldn’t stp ___35___ in its future. But we mustn’t frget that fr sme cmmn illnesses, the cure may lie in the past.

THE GLOBAL WASTE TRADE IS ESSENTIALLY BROKEN
Cut int hillside in nrthern Malaysia stands a large, pen-air warehuse. This is a recycling factry, which pened last Nvember. On a very ht afternn in January, Shahid Ali was wrking his very first week n the jb. He std knee-deep in sggy, white bits f plastic. Arund him, mre bits flated f the cnveyr belt and fell t the grund like snwflakes.
Hur after hur, Ali srts thrugh the plastic jumble mving dwn the belt, picking ut pieces that lk ff-clr r siled-rejects (废品) in the recycling prcess. Thugh it lks like backbreaking wrk, Ali says it is a great imprvement ver his previus jb, flding bed-sheets in a nearby textile factry, fr much lwer pay. Nw, if he eats simply, he can save mney frm his wages f just ver $l an hur and send $250 a mnth t his parents and six brthers and sisters in Peshawar, Pakistan, 2,700 miles away, “As sn as I heard abut this wrk, I asked fr a jb,” says Ali, 24, a bearded man with glasses and an easy smile. Still, he’s wrking 12 hurs a day, seven days a week. “If I take a day ff, I lse a day’s wages,” he says.
In the warehuse, hundreds f bags are stacked mre than 60 feet high-each stuffed with plastic wrappers and bags thrwn away weeks earlier by their riginal users in Califrnia. The fact that the waste has traveled t this distant crner f the planet in the first place shws hw badly the glbal recycling ecnmy has failed t keep pace with humanity’s plastics addictin. This is an ecsystem that is deeply dysfunctinal, if nt n the pint f cllapse: Abut 90% f the millins f tns f plastic the wrld prduces every year will eventually end up nt recycled, but burned, buried, r dumped.
Plastic recycling enjys ever-wider supprt amng cnsumers: Putting ygurt cntainers and juice bttles in a blue bin is an ec-friendly act f faith in millins f husehlds. But faith ges nly s far. The tidal wave f plastic items that enters the recycling stream each year is increasingly likely t fall right back ut again, casualties f a brken market. Many prducts that cnsumers believe (and industries claim) are “recyclable" are in reality nt, because f hard ecnmics. With il and gas prices near 20-year lws, s-called virgin plastic, a prduct f petrleum feed-stcks, is nw far cheaper and easier t btain than recycled material. That unfreseen shift has yanked the financial rug ut frm under what was until recently a practical recycling industry. “The glbal waste trade is essentially brken,” says the head f the glbal plastics campaign at Greenpeace. “We are sitting n vast amunts f plastic with nwhere t send it and nthing t d with it.”

Many f these penalties are impsed regardless f the seriusness f the ffense r the persn’s individual circumstances. _____________48_____________ They can affect a persn’s ability t get a jb and qualificatin fr benefits.
In all, mre than 45,000 laws and rules serve t exclude vast numbers f peple frm fully participating in American life. Sme laws make senses. N ne advcates letting smene cnvicted f pedphilia (恋童癖) wrk in a schl. _____________49_____________ Shuld a wman wh pssessed a small amunt f drugs years ag be permanently unable t be licensed as a nurse?
These laws are als cunterprductive (适得其反), since they make it harder fr peple with criminal recrds t find husing r a jb, tw key factrs that reduce backsliding. A recent reprt makes several recmmendatins, including the ablitin f mst pst-cnvictin penalties, except fr thse specifically needed t prtect public safety. _____________50_____________
The pint isn’t t excuse r frget the crime. Rather, it is t recgnize that in America’s vast criminal justice system, and secnd chances are crucial. It is in n ne's interest t keep a large segment f the ppulatin n the margins f sciety.

    IV. Summary Writing
    51. Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
The questin f whether ur gvernment shuld prmte science and technlgy r the liberal arts in higher educatin isn’t an either/r prpsitin, althugh the current emphasis n preparing yung Americans fr STEM (science, technlgy, engineering, maths)-related fields can make it seem that way.
The latest cngressinal reprt acknwledges the critical imprtance f technical training, but als claims that the study f the humanities (人文学科) and scial sciences must remain central cmpnents f America’s educatinal system at all levels. Bth are critical t prducing citizens wh can participate effectively in ur demcratic sciety, becme innvative leaders, and benefit frm the spiritual enrichment that the reflectin n the great ideas f mankind ver time prvides.
Parents and students wh have invested heavily in higher educatin wrry abut graduates’ jb prspects as technlgical advances and changes in dmestic and glbal markets transfrm prfessins in ways that reduce wages and cut jbs. Under these circumstances, it’s natural t lk fr what may appear t be the mst “practical” way ut f the prblem “Majr in a subject designed t get yu a jb” seems the bvius answer t sme, thugh this ignres the fact that many disciplines in the humanities characterized as “sft” ften, in fact, lead t emplyment and success in the lng run. Indeed, accrding t surveys, emplyers have expressed a preference fr students wh have received a bradly-based educatin that has taught them t write well, think critically, research creatively, and cmmunicate easily.
Mrever, students shuld be prepared nt just fr their first jb, but fr their 4th and 5th jbs, as there’s little reasn t dubt that peple entering the wrkfrce tday will be called upn t play many different rles ver the curse f their careers. The nes wh will d the best in this new envirnment will be thse whse educatins have prepared them t be flexible. The ability t draw upn every available tl and insight-picked up frm science, arts, and technlgy-t slve the prblems f the future, and take advantage f the pprtunities that present themselves, will be helpful t them and the United States.
