There’s a huge amunt f science abut dreaming but we still dn’t knw much abut it. It’s nt even clear if everyne des it: it has been prved that every n c experiences rapid eye mvement(REM) sleep, but whether thse wh claim they never dream really dn’t, r d dream but simply dn’t remember it after waking, isn’t clear. Nr is the way in which dreams are frmed in the brain entirely understd, let alne why it happens.
Hwever, many researchers have lng believed that bad dreams allw us t safely “act ut” ptentially dangerus situatins befre they ccur in real life. And a new study seems t add weight t that thery.
The researchers asked 18 vlunteers t wear headsets while they slept and then wke them several times during the night t ask them a series f questins abut whether they’d been dreaming, and if that dream invlved fear. They then cmpared the vlunteers’ answers t their mapped brain activity during sleep.
They discvered that during “scary” dreams, tw areas f the subjects’ brains were particularly active: the insula(脑岛) and the cingulate crtex(扣带皮层). During the day, the frmer is invlved in identifying and evaluating emtinal respnses, while the latter is respnsible fr preparing the bdy’s physical reactin t threats.
In the secnd part f the study, 89 participants kept a dream diary fr a week, and were then shwn a series f unhappy images. In subjects wh reprted having a lt f frightening dreams, the images caused less f a respnse in the tw brain regins than thse wh reprted few r nne. What’s mre, thse wh’d had mre bad dreams shwed mre activity in a regin f the brain that’s knwn t reduce the fear respnse.
“Dreams maybe cnsidered as real training fr ur future reactins and may ptentially prepare us t face real-life dangers,” said lead researcher Lamprs Pergamvrs.

    B. T cause them t dream bad dreams.
    C. T weaken their f car respnse.
    D. T find ut why they had bad dreams.
    27. What did the new study find?

    D. Bad dreams may prepare peple fr ptentially frightening situatins.

Girls in primary schl are just as physically capable as their male classmates, accrding t ur research, taking the unhappiness ut f the phrase “yu play like a girl.”
When we cmpared primary schlchildren’s physical capabilities, differences between girls and bys were nt as prnunced as peple think. S they shuld be happily playing with and cmpeting against each ther in the backyard, playgrund and sprting fields.
As part f wider research t assess peple’s physical capabilities acrss their life curse, we tested 300 children and teenagers between the ages f 3 and 19. We tested each child fr ver tw hurs, taking mre than 100 measurements. Acrss all measures f physical perfrmance, there was ne cnsistent finding. There was n statistical difference in the capabilities f girls and bys until high-schl age (cmmnly age 12).
Let’s use standing lng jump as an example. This prvides a measure f yur legs’ explsive pwer. We fund n difference between bys and girls befre they turn 12. Every physical measure fllwed this pattern. Befre the age f 12, bys and girls d just as well as each ther in the standing lng jump.
There is n cnsensus(共识) acrss schls r amng different sprts abut mixed-gender sprts fr primary schl children. Fr instance, bys and girls cmpete separately in mst lcal Little Athletics after age five but field hckey(场地曲棍球) can have mixed gender teams until age 17. And in tennis, primary schl-aged girls and bys play separately in singles matches but can play against each ther in mixed dubles.
Our findings supprt the push fr bys and girls t cmpete in mixed sprting teams until the end f primary schl, after which the hrmnal(荷尔蒙的) changes mean bys tend t perfrm better in sprts and tasks requiring strength and speed.
There are als sme practical advantages t mixed sprts in primary schl and in weekend cmpetitins: fewer scheduling cnflicts (allwing schl and sprt administratins t fit games mre cnveniently int busy sprting places), fewer clubs r rganizatins t share already stretched gvernment funding.
    28. What des the underlined wrd “prnunced” in paragraph 2mean?
    A. Flexible.B. Hrrible C. Obvius.D. Incredible.
    29. At what age d bys begin t display a cmpetitive edge in strength-based sprts?
    A. Age 5.B. Age 12C. Age 17.D. Age 19.
    30. What is an advantage f mixed-gender sprting teams?
    A. Increased cmpetitin and mtivatin.
    B. Enhanced scial skills and teamwrk.
    C. Decreased cnflicts within schls,
    D. Reduced gvernment budget spending.
    31. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
