It can remain in the envirnment fr many years and pllute large areas f land and water. S, it has always been a headache fr peple t deal with the waste frm PET and ther plastics.
The researchers made the discvery while examining the structure(结构) f a natural enzyme in Japan. They fund that the natural enzyme was helping t break dwn PET. S they decided t make small changes t the enzyme by adding sme amin acids(氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme’s plastic-eating ability wrk faster and better.
Jhn McGeehan, ne f the lead researchers, said, “We’ve made an imprved enzyme. It’s better than the natural ne. And we are trying t make mre imprvements t it.” He went n, “The imprved enzyme is nt harmful t humans r animals, and it is friendly t the envirnment. S, we are cnsidering putting it int wider use.”
The team is nw trying t make the imprved enzyme break dwn as much PET as pssible.“We’ll see that the plastic pllutin may be stpped with this newly-imprved enzyme. Hwever, there is still a lng way t g,” Jhn McGeehan added.

Thusands f il wrkers left every year because they culdn’t stand the difficult cnditins here. I wanted t d smething abut that, s I started t plant trees.” Wang had heart disease and culd hardly walk a few steps withut resting. “I just tld myself nt t __▲__,” Wang said “We sacrificed (牺牲) the envirnment t il prductin in the past. Nw I want t make up fr the lsses.”
Planting trees in the desert was nt easy. Wang had t start by imprving the sil and experimenting with different kinds f trees. At first, Wang planted trees arund his factry. After he gt enugh trees, he turned his attentin t the garbage dump (垃圾场). With his team, Wang made the dirty garbage dump int a place f trees. And nw it is knwn as Yanming Park — the first park named after a real persn in Karamay. Every day, Wang likes t take a walk arund the park. “The park has becme a part f my life, and every tree is my child.” Wang said. “I will nt stp planting trees here until the day I pass away.”

Lndn used t be “fggy” fr the same reasn that cities like Beijing r Chngqing are “fggy” tday. In fact, the “fg” was smg, a mixture (混合物) f smke and fg. In ther wrds, it was made by air pllutin. In Lndn, sme f this pllutin came frm factries, but much f it came frm the cal that peple burnt in their huses t keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, Lndn’s smg prblem had becme s bad that the gvernment decided t d smething t clean the air. A new law was made and nbdy culd burn cal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were n mre “pea-supers”.
Many Chinese cities nw face the same kind f prblem f air pllutin that Lndn faced 40 r 50 years ag. Hwever, this prblem is mre difficult fr Chinese cities t slve. One reasn is that mre f the pllutin cmes frm the factries, rather than frm cal burnt in peple’s huses. If these factries were clsed, this wuld harm the ecnmy and lts f peple wuld lse their jbs. Anther reasn is that changing frm cal t cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
Hwever, the air in many Chinese cities is becming cleaner and cleaner, as the gvernment and peple pay mre and mre attentin t cutting dwn pllutin. As a result, there are fewer “pea-supers” in Beijing than there used t be.

We all knw plastic pllutin has becme a serius prblem. One millin plastic drinking bttles are thrwn away every minute. What if we culd use plastic waste t build rads? This is exactly what Tby McCartney has dne.
In 2019, McCartney’s UK-based cmpany, MacRebur, built a plastic rad in Elgin twn, Sctland. The plastic waste was made int grains(颗粒)and then mixed with bitumen(沥青). The rad lks just like any ther rad. But it has imprved strength and is mre stretchy(有弹性的) thanks t the plastic.
“Our technlgy can nt nly help slve the prblem f plastic waste but als prduce rads that deal better with changes in the weather,” McCartney said.
McCartney’s idea came frm a trip t India. “I saw peple in India wuld put plastic waste int pthles(路面的坑洼) and burn it. The plastic wuld melt dwn(熔化) and fill the hles,” said McCartney.
“I knew that there must be sme crrespndences between plastic and bitumen, which bth cme frm il. That’s hw I started t think abut mixing them,” he said.
After lts f testing, McCartney fund the perfect methd. And nw his cmpany has built many plastic rads arund the wrld. A ne-kilmeter stretch f rad uses abut 684, 000 plastic bttles r 1.8 millin plastic bags. The rad itself can be recycled and the materials can be reused t build new rads.
“We’re just a small part f ending the plastic prblems, but it’s nice t be part f it,” McCartney said. “I just dn’t want my daughters t live in a wrld where there are mre plastics in the cean than fish.”
