The student arrived early, sat frnt and center, and std ut in my classrm in mre ways than ne. I’d say that he was abut 40 years lder than his classmates in my undergraduate cmmunicatins class. He eagerly jumped int class discussins, with his humr and wisdm f experience. And he was always respectful f the ther students’ perspectives, as if each f them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile — and he left with ne t.
“These students gave me the cnfidence that I didn’t need t feel bad abut my age,” Valencia says.
One day, I sptted Valencia n campus. He said he wuld have t stp taking classes that semester and reapply fr next year. By then, he hped t have earned enugh mney and have his student-lan papers in rder. He asked seriusly whether he culd still sit in n my cmmunicatins class.
Sure, I said. But he wuldn’t get any credit.
N prblem, he said.
Sn there he was again, back at his ld desk, jumping int ur discussins n hw t find and tell stries in Ls Angeles — a 63-year-ld man with as much energy and curisity as any f the yungsters in class.
A lt f Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he culdn’t affrd that semester’s tuitin but was still ding the hmewrk. “Here he is, willingly taking a class fr the delight f it and benefit f learning,” says Jessica Espinsa, a 25-year-ld junir. Afterward, I verheard Valencia wanted t stay in schl until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years t finish cmmunity cllege, s he had a lng way t g.
There is smething splendidly unreasnable abut Valencia’s determinatin t get a fur-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper n the wall. But that desn’t seem especially relevant. He’s fund all the yuthful energy and academic pprtunity stimulating. Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will nt shw up n his transcripts(成绩单). PFAS are fund in nnstick pans, water-prf fabrics and fd packaging. They’re called frever chemicals because f their ability t stick arund and nt break dwn. Nw, using a bit f heat and tw relatively cmmn cmpunds, researchers have degraded (降解) the chemical in the lab.
While sme scientists have fund relatively simple ways f breaking dwn select PFAS, mst degradatin methds require harsh prcesses using intense pressure — in sme cases ver 22 mega-pascals — r extremely high temperatures — smetimes upwards f 1,000℃ — t break the chemical bnds.
William Dichtel, frm Nrthwestern University in Evanstn, and his team experimented with tw substances fund in nearly every chemistry lab: sdium hydrxide (氢氧化钠), als knwn as lye, and a slvent (溶剂) called DMSO. The team wrked specifically n a grup f frever chemicals which cntain a large percentage f PFAS.
When the team cmbined chemicals with the lye and DMSO at 120℃ and with n extra pressure needed, the carbxylic acid (羧酸) fell ff the chemicals and became carbn dixide. “What happened next was unexpected, ” Dichtel said. The lss f the acid helped degrade the chemicals int fluride ins (氟离子) and smaller carbn-cntaining prducts, leaving behind n harmful by-prducts.
“It’s a neat methd; it’s different frm thers that have been tried,” says Chris Sales, an envirnmental engineer at Drexel University in Philadelphia wh was nt invlved in the study. “The biggest questin is hw this culd be adapted and scaled up. Understanding this mechanism is just ne step in unding frever chemicals,” Sales said.
This prcess wuldn’t wrk t deal with PFAS in the envirnment, because it requires a cncentrated amunt f the chemicals, but it culd ne day be used in wastewater treatment plants, where the pllutants culd be filtered ut f the water, cncentrated and then brken dwn.
28. What can we learn abut the previus ways t break dwn PFAS?
A. They’re ec-friendly.B. They’ve been widely used.
C. They’re difficult t perate.D. They’re regarded as useless.
29. What did the team d in their experiment?
A. They experimented with different slvents.
B. They tried tw very cmmn substances.
C. They tested every grup f frever chemicals,
D. They expsed chemicals t extreme temperatures.
30. What made the researchers mst surprised in their experiment?
A. Envirnmentally-friendly reactins ccurred.
B. The carbxylic acid became carbn dixide.
C. N extra pressure was needed fr the trial.
D. The lye and DMSO culd wrk at 120℃,
31. What can we infer frm Chris Sales’ wrds?
A. It is difficult t deal with PFAS in the envirnment.
B. This mechanism will sn be used in the envirnment.
C. The methd will be applied t different kinds f chemicals.
D. Mre research is needed befre the methd is widely used.

Sme late Stne Age Eurpeans may have carried make-up inside mini bttles wrn arund their necks r waists mre than 6,000 years ag.
Researchers have fund traces f ingredients knwn t be used in csmetic frmulatins (配方) by later civilizatins inside small bttles unearthed in Slvenia, dating t between 4350 and 4100 B.C, mre than 2,000 years earlier than previusly thught. In 2014, Bine Kramberger at the Institute fr the PCHS fund a mini ceramic bttle at an ancient site nce ccupied by peple f the Lasinja culture in arund 4350 B. C. S far, mre than 100 similar bttles have been fund.

Curiusly, mst f them have hles in their tiny handles r edges that archaelgists think peple threaded string thrugh, enabling them t be wrn arund the neck r waist. But Kramberger’s find was distinct because it cntained a slid white substance. “It was clear that it had valuable infrmatin because in such ld archaelgical sites, we rarely find cntainers that still keep remains f their frmer cntent,” he says.
Lng and thin stne tls were fund near the bttle, which culd have been used t extract the substance within. Nw, Kramberger and his clleagues have analysed the substance in the bttle and examined 13 thers frm the same perid.
The mystery material cntained a white lead mineral called cerussite, while different lead minerals were identified in tw ther bttles. The three lead-cntaining bttles als had cntents cming frm beeswax(蜂蜡) inside.
“The bttles’ cntents culd have been used fr painting,” says Kramberger. But he says it is mre likely that they were csmetics, because they cntained cmmn ingredients fr such prducts knwn frm later cultures. Cerussite pwder was very ppular amng the ancient Greeks and Rmans fr skin whitening and remedies, despite its knwn txicity (毒性).
Gaydarska says the new study supprts what archaelgists have lng thught — “that the abilities and cultures f Nelithic peple were far mre cmprehensive and cmplicated than they are ften given credit fr”.
32. Why are the small bttles unearthed in Slvenia special?
A. The time f the bttles is much earlier than previusly thught.
B. The bttles cntained sme ingredients related t the make-up.
C. Ancient peple might wear them arund their necks r waists.
D. Researchers were astnished at the number f the similar bttles.
33. Accrding t Kramberger’s finding, what is the substance cntained in the bttles?
A. String. B. White paint. C. Stne tls. D. Cerussite.
34. What can we infer frm the passage?
A. The technlgy f extracting substances was already advanced in ancient times.
B. Cerussite pwder was a perfect slutin t skin prblems fr ancient Eurpeans.
C. It’s easy fr archaelgists t find the cntainers with remains f frmer cntent.
D. The cultures f Nelithic peple were cmmnly believed t be easy and simple.
35. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
A. Peple in the Stne Age had an eye fr beauty.
B. Eurpeans may have wrn make-up in the Stne Age.
C. Bttles fund in Slvenia reveal ancient peple’s life.
D. Reasns fr ancient Eurpeans’ wearing make-up.

Hey, everyne. I’m really excited t be here t share my experiences since graduatin. When I was leaving here abut 10 years ag, I decided t g t cllege, which, when I think abut it, is a little strange, because I cme frm a family where n ne had ever gne t cllege. Everything I knew abut cllege came frm the mvies. Once in cllege, I gt a classic case f t much fun and t little class time. At the end f my secnd year, my majr prfessr warned me, yu're never ging t graduate unless smething big changes. But it wasn't until I entered my graduate prgram in cnservatin eclgy that I felt I was n the right path.
My cnservatin wrk has brught me jy, excitement, and adventure. I’ve dne sme research in the remte muntains f Califrnia. I’ve had dinners with imprtant pliticians. I’ve even stepped ver snakes in Africa. But mst imprtant f all, it gave me smething bigger than myself t fight fr. When I lk back, I feel frtunate t have chsen cllege, and particularly science, thrugh which I have rediscvered myself and achieved liberatin. And I'm sure yu all can d the same.
