“Straws made frm plant-based materials, such as paper and bamb, are ften advertised as being mre sustainable and ec-friendly than thse made frm plastic,” said Thim Grffen, authr f the study. “Hwever, the presence f PFAS in these straws means that’s nt necessarily true.”
Researchers n the study examined 39 brands f straws in Belgium frm supermarkets, ty stres, fast-fd chains, drug stres and e-cmmerce stres. The straws were either made f paper, bamb; glass, stainless steel r plastic, and the researchers tested each brand fr cncentratins f PFAS. 69% f the brands cntained PFAS, with paper straws mre likely t cntain the chemicals.
