The trades cme t mind. Whenever I call an electrician, r a masn, r a carpenter, I lk n in wnder as they smthly emply their skills. Fr example, I recently had a new kitchen sink fixed by a yung man. He hummed (哼曲子) as he wrked at the pipes, with every cnfidence in his abilities. When he was dne, he turned n the water and it flwed frth withut any leak. Is this nt a minr wnder?
All f this brught me t a decisin: I signed up fr an adult evening curse at a lcal technical schl. The title: Basic Electricity and Wiring. When we began, I felt immediately at a lss. In an instant I was a student again in all respects: The anxiety, the self-dubt, the wndering if I had made a mistake. S I wrked my way thrugh my basic wiring curse. My initial impulse (冲动) t jump ship gradually disappeared, because I came t realize that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill.
Later, each student wuld be ffered a switch and a lighting fixture (固定装置). The task was t fix them in a dr frame and wire them, but nt turn n the switch until the instructr was present. There I was, a prfessr, standing like a fresh-faced schlby befre my setup. When I was dne, I raised my hand. The instructr, a master electrician, came ver t lk ver my jb and glanced at me. “Hit the switch,” he said.
It’s hard t describe that mment. But I did feel that smething bigger than myself was at risk — I’m sure that learning is nt smething that is cmpleted early in life, frm which pint we simply mve n, cnstantly recycling what we already knw. The hrizn is brader than that, and the brader the hrizn, the mre pprtunities there are t learn smething new.
