    Grwing up, all I ever heard abut was “EQ.” It was the mid-1990s, and psychlgist Daniel Gleman had just ppularized the cncept f emtinal intelligence. Unlike IQ, which tracked cnventinal measures f intelligence like reasning and recall, EQ measured the ability t understand ther peple — t listen, t empathize(共情), and t appreciate.
    My mther, an elementary schl principal, prized brains and hard wrk, but she placed a special emphasis n Gleman’s new idea.
