I’m in a cffee shp in Manhattan and I’m abut t becme the mst disliked persn in the rm. First, I’m ging t interrupt the man reading quietly near the windw and ask fr a drink f his latte. Next, I’m ging t ask the line f peple waiting t pay if I can cut t the frnt f the queue. This is hw I chse t spend my last vacatin. Here’s why.
Grwing up, all I ever heard abut was “EQ.” It was the mid-1990s, and psychlgist Daniel Gleman had just ppularized the cncept f emtinal intelligence. Unlike IQ, which tracked cnventinal measures f intelligence like reasning and recall, EQ measured the ability t understand ther peple — t listen, t empathize(共情), and t appreciate.
My mther, an elementary schl principal, prized brains and hard wrk, but she placed a special emphasis n Gleman’s new idea. T her, EQ was the elixir(万能药) that separated the gd students frm the great after they left schl. She was determined t send me int the adult wrld with as much f this elixir as pssible.
But when I finally began my first jb, I nticed a secnd elixir in the pckets f sme f my clleagues. It gave their pinins extra weight and their decisins added impact. Strangest f all, it seemed like the anti-EQ: Instead f knwing hw t make thers feel gd, this elixir gave peple the curage t d the ppsite — t say things thers didn’t want t hear.
This was assertiveness(魄力). It biled dwn t the cmmand f a single skill: the ability t have uncmfrtable cnversatins. Assertive peple — thse with high “AQ”— ask fr things they want, decline things they dn’t, prvide cnstructive feedback, and engage in direct cnfrntatin(对峙) and debate.
A lifetime imprving my EQ helped me empathize with thers, but it als left me verly sensitive t situatins where I had t say r d things that might make thers unhappy. While I didn’t avid cnflict, I was always frustrated by my pwerlessness when I had t say r d smething that culd upset smene. This is my prblem and I’m wrking n it.
    24. Why did the authr act that way in the cffee shp?
    A. T imprve a skill.B. T test a cncept.
    C. T advcate a new idea.D. T have a unique vacatin.
    25. What d we knw abut the authr’s mther?
    A. She thught little f IQ.
    B. She ppularized Gleman’s idea.
    C. She was a strict mther and principal.
    D. She valued EQ as the key t greatness.
    26. What des the wrd “it” underlined in the furth paragraph refer t?
    A. EQ.B. AQ.C. Empathy.D. Curage.
    27. Accrding t the passage, thse with high EQ but lw AQ are likely t be ______.
    A. successful leadersB. peple pleasers
    C. terrible cmplainersD. pleasure seekers

The cnditins lked gd fr farming, s the newcmers planted large agricultural crps. But Suth Flrida’s cycle f flding was a prblem. T address that, develpers attempted t drain(排水) the land. They als built structures t cntrl water levels and flw.
Thse changes made it easier fr mre peple t live year-rund in Suth Flrida. Hwever, they als disturbed life in the Everglades, which depends n freshwater regularly refilling the land. The area’s grwing human ppulatin needed freshwater. And large farms cnsumed large quantities f freshwater. By the mid-1900s, water levels in suthern Flrida began t g dwn. Lack f freshwater wasn’t the nly prblem. As mre and mre land was develped fr peple and farms, the Everglades’ histric bundaries cntracted. Lss f habitat and hunting threatened the survival f native species in the Everglades.
Sme peple hped that the gvernment’s recgnitin might save the Everglades. They fught fr it. Everglades Natinal Park was established in 1947. It became the first park in the United States created fr its bidiversity.

American families dn’t save mney like they used t. In 2018 the persnal saving rate was smewhere arund 7%, which is well belw the rate f a few decades ag.
There are a lt f ptential explanatins fr this. Wage grwth has slwed while necessities such as husing and medical care have grwn mre expensive. The rise f easy credit has made verspending easier than ever. And the number f peple wh make a budget is decreasing.
Nw, a team f U. S. and Canadian ecnmists have prpsed a new explanatin fr the declining savings rate, ne rted in individual psychlgy. At its heart lies a simple bservatin: Spending is a lt mre visible than nt spending. Humans are scial creatures, and we have a tendency t evaluate ur wn standing in life relative t hw ur friends and neighbrs are ding. We want t keep up with the Jneses, and stay ahead f the Smiths. Because f this, when we see ther peple spending mney we have a tendency t believe that we can — r shuld — be spending t. Nwadays, changes in the media landscape have made ther peple’s spending mre visible than ever. That, in turn, is making all f us spend even mre — and save even less.
David Hirshleifer, ne f the ecnmists, said that “it’s easy t think that yu’re saving enugh because yu are nt thrwing luxury parties r taking expensive jurneys the way sme peple yu knw are.” But, he warned, “thse jurneys and parties may nt really be typical f yur acquaintances — they just stand ut in memry.”
The ecnmists imply that finding ways t make nn-spending mre visible might help individuals develp mre realistic views f verall spending and saving behavir. “Make a special effrt t ntice when yur friends are careful with mney, such as hlding n t their 15-year-ld car,” Hirshleifer said.
    32. Which f the fllwing is a ptential explanatin fr the lw saving rate in America?
    A. The reductin in the incme.B. The easy access t mney.
    C. The grwing desire fr husing.D. The difficulty in sticking t a budget.
    33. The “individual psychlgy” mentined in paragraph 3 refers t a tendency t ______.
    A. shw ff wealthB. cnnect with thers
    C. cmpare neself t thersD. adapt neself t scial change
    34. What is the warning f David Hirshleifer?
    A. It is imprper t cpy thers’ spending habits.
    B. It is unwise t spend mre than ne can affrd.
    C. One may spend t much n jurneys and parties.
    D. One may have misunderstanding f thers’ spending habits.
    35. What d the ecnmists suggest peple d?
    A. Make gd use f mney.
    B. Save as much mney as pssible.
    C. Pay attentin t nn-spending behavir.
    D. Change verall spending and saving behavir.
