Weekends at the cabin (木屋) are magical. During the break,ur family cnstantly balances the demands f wrk and schl. I’m subject t my watch and alarm clck. But cming t the cabin n the weekend is like entering anther wrld.
Here, I dn’t need t knw what time it is-sunrise and sunset, hunger and chres set ur schedule. The huse and the wds arund it are silent and dark, except fr birdsng and the mn. Life seems less pressing, and it’s easier t live in the mment withut distractin.
When I get up the next mrning, my sn is already sitting in frnt f the fire, staring at the flames. I sit beside him, and he leans int me, sleepy and a bit sad. “What’s up?” I ask. “I just dn’t want t g hme yet. I like it better here.”
I knw what he means. I smile and put my arms arund him. “Even when we’re hme, this place is always here, where it’s quiet and safe, and everyne yu lve has time fr yu.”

One f my bad habits is saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I’m ding. Smetimes it’s because I actually am busy, but ther times it’s because that’s what I think I’m suppsed t say. That’s what imprtant peple say. That’s what peple wh get prmted say. But wrking lng hurs desn’t drive better results. Never taking a vacatin wn’t lead t a prmtin. S why are we s prud t talk abut hw busy we are all the time?
In 2016, researchers frm Clumbia, Harvard, and Gergetwn cnducted a study t figure it ut. They fund busy peple are perceived t be f high status, and interestingly, the status is heavily influenced by ur wn beliefs abut scial mbility. In ther wrds, the mre we believe that ne has the pprtunity fr success based n hard wrk, the mre we tend t think that peple wh skip leisure and wrk all the time are f higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have t appear busy, and there’s a view that if smene is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re prbably a big deal. This culture f busyness is making it hard fr emplyees t find wrk-life balance. Accrding t a recent study, ne in five highly engaged emplyees is at risk f burnut.
Persnally, I’m ging t stp saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I am. It sunds self-righteus (自以为是的) and sets the wrng tne. Phrases like “I have limited access t email” and “I’ll respnd as sn as I get back” sund like yu’re being held against yur will frm wrking as ppsed t making the mst f yur time ff.
That’s why we recently launched the Out f Office Email Generatr, a free tl yu can use befre yur next lng weekend r trip. Yu can share lud and prud that yu wn’t be checking email until yu’re back. Managers need t think twice abut emailing their teams n the weekend and talking abut hw busy they are. Leaders shuld take time ff themselves and encurage emplyees t d the same.
    28. What is a reasn fr the authr t be in the habit f saying “busy”?
    A. He is actually prud t be fully ccupied.
    B. He just fllws successful peple’s example.
    C. He thinks everyne shuld be devted t wrk.
    D. He believes busyness ensures accmplishments.
    29. Why d we tend t think that busy peple are f high status?
    A. Our status can be dwn t ur scial mbility.
    B. Few peple f high status have time fr leisure.
    C. Our pprtunity fr success never cmes easily.
    D. We hld the belief that hard wrk leads t success.
    30. What des “I have limited access t email” sund like accrding t the authr?
    A. I enjy my time ff wrk.
    B. I am frced t stp wrking.
    C. 1 am ppsed t the wrk culture.
    D. I am t busy t check all emails.
    31. Why was the Out f Office Email Generatr launched?
    A. T stp managers talking abut hw busy they usually are.
    B. T allw fr less time busy emplyees spend checking emails.
    C. T ensure emplyees as well as emplyers truly have time ff.
    D. T encurage emplyers and emplyees t answer emails in time.
    D
Hundreds r even thusands f jackdaws(寒鸦) are knwn t launch int the winter sky at nce frm the treetps at sunrise, and then split int smaller grups t feed thrughut the day. Nw, eclgists knw that this synchrnized(同步的) departure is timed with a cmplicated behavir called “cnsensus decisin-making”, where the majrity agree t take actin.
T figure it ut, researchers in the United Kingdm recrded hundreds f hurs f their bird calls in Crnwall ver several mnths. They measured when the first jackdaws began their calls, hw lud the birds were, and hw quickly the swell(增强) f calls rse, and then cmpared these sunds t ftage(镜头) f thse birds’ departures. The team fund that the jackdaw grup left tgether nce the chrus f calls reached a critical mass--the mre rapidly the chrus swelled, the earlier the birds left.
“They all leave tgether in a few secnds. The sky just fills with black birds frthwith. It is just like a black snwstrm,” Alex Thrntn, an eclgist at the University f Exeter, UK, tld New Scientist. Every call is a jackdaw casting its vte t leave. “At first yu just get a few calls, then mre and mre birds jin in and it builds and builds. And the steeper the increase, the earlier they leave,” Thrntn added. On rare ccasins, when the intensity f the chrus desn’t build enugh and the jackdaws dn’t agree, the birds instead launch ff in small numbers.
The team als fund that nce jackdaws reached a cnsensus they departed almst immediately, with hundreds f individuals flying in less than five secnds. When scientist splayed past recrdings f calls back t the jackdaws, getting in the way f the grup’s natural crescend(渐强的声音), they were able t push frward the birds’ launching by mre than six minutes. The birds did nt, hwever, change their launch times in respnse t ther nises.
“The gregarius(群居的) birds prefer t leave as a grup, althugh each jackdaw will have a slightly different preference as t when they want t leave, based n factrs like their size and hunger,” Alex Dibnah, a University f Exeter graduate student and lead authr f the study, said in a statement. “Leaving the rst(栖息处) tgether has varius benefits, including safety frm predatrs and access t infrmatin such as where t find fd.”
This research shws the critical rle vcalizatins(发声) play in grup decisin-making fr this species. One next step fr this research, accrding t the authrs,is t figure ut hw human-created nises might affect this prcess and the spread f infrmatin thrughut these cmmunities.
“Imagine a big rst near a twn r busy rad,” Thrntn said. “If the birds can’t hear each ther and can’t frm a cnsensus t leave tgether, it culd have big impacts n their ppulatin.”
32.What is the purpse f the research in Crnwall?
    A. T understand hw jackdaws reach an agreement.
    B. T study what makes jackdaws’ departure time unique.
    C. T make a cmparisn f jackdaws’ calls with ther birds’.
    D. T assess the imprtance f jackdaws’ cmplicated behavirs.
    33. What des the underlined “frthwith” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Frequently. B. Gradually. C. Traditinally. D. Immediately.
34.What can be inferred abut the jackdaw grup frm Paragraph 4?
    A. It can reach an agreement within secnds.
    B. Its launch times vary little frm seasn t seasn.
    C. It can distinguish its natural calls frm ther nises.
    D. It makes n respnse t the past recrdings f calls.
    35. What d the researchers plan t study next?
    A. The impacts f human hunting n jackdaws’ ppulatin.
    B. The effects f nises n jackdaws’ grup decisin-making.
    C. The way jackdaws spread infrmatin in their cmmunities.
    D. The rle f jackdaws’ vcalizatins in grup decisin-making.

In early Octber, Travis Gienger transprted an enrmus pumpkin(南瓜) frm his hme in Minnesta t the Wrld Champinship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Califrnia. His pumpkin set the recrd fr the biggest ne ever grwn in Nrth America. Hw d cmpetitive grwers get their pumpkins t grw t massive sizes? 36
Gienger, wh teaches hrticulture(园艺学) at Anka Technical Cllege, begins grwing his pumpkins in mid-April, starting with seeds that he grws indrs fr the first few weeks, when Minnesta’s sil is t frsty. 37 They can absrb sunlight, nutrients frm the sil, and water there. “At their peak, yu ‘re watering them with at least 600 liters a day,” he says.
Depending n the variety, pumpkin plants can grw up t a dzen fruits n a single vine(藤曼). But t maximize size, grwers remve all but ne r tw f these pumpkins in rder t decrease each individual fruit’s cmpetitin fr resurces. 38
But what exactly happens inside a pumpkin as it grws? Tw factrs drive natural grwth: cell divisin and cell expansin. Cell divisin accunts fr mst f the grwth at the beginning f a fruit’s life. This perid lasts fr abut 20 days in pumpkin plants. 39 Pumpkin cells will expand until arund 50 r 60 days after pllinatin (授粉).
40 Sme varieties f pumpkins have been bred specifically t maximize their size. Still, there is genetic variatin even amng pumpkins f the same variety. This has led t cmpetitin fr the best seeds. As an enthusiastic Facebk user, she had seen ther peple find all srts f cnnectins thrugh the site and thught it might help her husband find Luna.
The next day Alvin psted a pht f the balln and the Christmas list n his Facebk page, asking fr help lcating the sender.
