Ray says the Crescend Orchestra, which was brn ut f the pandemic, desn’t necessarily share the scial gals f a prgram like the Special Olympics. The fcus is n teaching students hw t play an instrument, thrugh ne-n-ne instructin tailred t their needs. That invlves tls like music scarves, egg shakers, rhythm sticks and cardbard instruments. Ray als wrks with a lcal charity t give damaged instruments a secnd life in her classrm.

Summer sea ice in the Arctic culd melt almst cmpletely by the 2030s —rughly a decade earlier than prjected —even if humans cut back drastically n greenhuse gas emissins, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, als called a “blue cean event”, will happen when the sea ice drps belw ne millin square kilmeters, writes Jnathan Bamber, a prfessr f physical gegraphy at the University f Bristl, in the Cnversatin.
Previus assessments using mdels have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissins scenaris by 2050. But researchers nticed differences between what climate mdels predicted abut what wuld happen t sea ice and what they’ve actually seen thrugh bservatins. “The mdels, n average, underestimate sea ice decline cmpared with bservatins,” says Nathan Gillett, an Envirnment and Climate Change Canada scientist.
Nw, in a new study published in Nature Cmmunicatins, Gillett and his teammates changed these mdels t mre clsely fit satellite data cllected ver the past 40 years. Using these adapted mdels, the researchers prjected ice changes under different pssible levels f greenhuse gas emissins. Their paper suggests that regardless f the emissins scenari, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next decade r tw.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes during the winter, summer ice cverage has steadily been declining ver the past few decades because f climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster itself—as ice disappears, it expses mre f the dark blue cean, which absrbs mre heat and leads t mre melting. This prcess has led t the regin warming nearly fur times faster than the rest f the glbe since 1979.
Sea ice decline culd have disastrus cnsequences that extend t the rest f the planet, including sea level rise and disturbance t weather patterns and ecsystems. Animals like plar bears and seals that rely n Arctic ice t survive culd be placed at risk.
28. Accrding t the new research, what will happen cncerning summer sea ice in the Arctic?
A. Its cmplete melting may ccur earlier than expected.
B. Its vanishing nce and fr all will be in less than 10 years.
C. Its drpping will give rise t s-called “blue cean event”.
D. Its melting can be prevented in greenhuse gas emissins.
29. What effrt did the researchers make after figuring ut the prblem f the previus assessments?
A. They abandned the attempt t use mdels.
B. They cllected satellite data ver the past 40 years.
C. They adapted the mdels t be cnsistent with the actual cases.
D. They predicted accurately ice changes in regins f the Arctic.
30. Hw is the last paragraph but ne develped?
A. By listing statistics. B. By giving definitins.
C. By making a cmparisn. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
31. What message may the text be trying t cnvey t readers?

A simple spnge (海绵) has imprved hw rbts grasp, scientists frm the University f Bristl have fund. This easy-t-make device can help stiff rbts handle delicate items carefully by mimicking the tuch, r variable stiffness, f a human.
Rbts can skip and jump, but they’re t rigid t hld an egg easily. Variable-stiffness devices are ptential slutins fr reducing damage t hard rbts, r fr imprving the lad capacity f sft rbts.
This study, published at the IEEE Internatinal Cnference n Rbtics and Autmatin (ICRA) 2023, shws that variable stiffness can be achieved by a silicne (硅胶) spnge.
Lead authr Tianqi Yue frm the University f Bristl explained, “btic arms are t rigid (僵硬的) s they cannt make such a sft human-like grasp n delicate bjects, fr example, an egg. What makes humans different frm rbtic arms is that we have sft tissues enclsing rigid bnes, which act as a natural mitigating (缓和的) mechanism. In this paper, we managed t develp a sft device with variable stiffness, t be munted n the end f a rbtic arm t make the rbt-bject cntact safe.”
Silicne spnge is just like the cleaning spnge used in everyday tasks. By pressing the spnge, the spnge stiffens, which is why it can be transfrmed int a variable-stiffness device.
This device culd be used in industrial rbts and service rbts t make human-rbt interactin safer.
Mr Yue added, “We managed t use a spnge t make a cheap but effective device that can help rbts achieve sft cntact with bjects. The great ptential cmes frm its lw cst and light weight. We believe this silicne-spnge based variable-stiffness device will prvide a nvel slutin in industry and healthcare. “
The team will nw lk at making the device achieve variable stiffness in multiple directins.
32. What des the underlined wrd in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Stimulating. B. Imitating. C. Restring. D. Demnstrating.
33. Which f the fllwing rbts can be dealt with by a variable-stiffness device?
A. Rbts that are unable t grasp bjects.
B. Rbts that are t rigid t skip and jump.
C. Rbts that are incapable f getting arund.
D. Rbts that lack the capacity t grasp fragile stuff.
34. Why is silicne spnge selected t be an ideal slutin?
A. It has natural sft tissues.
B. It is inexpensive and lightweight.
C. It can help rbts achieve cntact with bjects.
D. It can functin as a cleaning instrument nce pressed.
35. What’s the purpse f the text?
A. T persuade. B. T entertain. C. T educate. D. T infrm.
