Slave ships carried crps as fd fr enslaved Africans during the lng vyage. Sme f the fd names later became part f the English language. First, the wrd “yam” is f West African rigin. Yams are lng vegetables with white r purple flesh. The Spanish brught this fd alng with its name t the Americas. Secnd, the wrd “banana” is believed t cme frm a West African language. In 1633, a dctr in Britain sld the first banana t Eurpe. Third, the wrd “kra”. Okra is a tall and green plant. It is ften used in sups. Okra reached the United States in the 1700s. Finally, the wrd “jumb”. It means “very large fr its type”. The wrd became a ppular American usage in an interesting way. Jumb was the name f an African elephant. The elephant was caught in East Africa in 1861. Later, the Lndn Z purchased him. He became a main attractin there. In 1882, the z sld him t a famus American circus. At his largest, he std 3.6 meters tall. After his death, his name became a wrd that means “huge”.
