At first, the scientists wndered whether it was a mistake. Just 21 days 17 leaving the Nrwegian island f Spitsbergen, an arctic fx had arrived in Greenland. And in less than three mnths, the fx made it t Canada.
The fx averaged nearly 30 miles a day------sme days, thugh, it walked almst 100 miles. The data was real, the scientists decided as the fx kept ging. The creature’s traveling last year, 18 (dcument)in a recent paper, wwed Tarrux and his fellw Nrwegian researcher Eva, 19 the animal is knwn fr its endurance and ability t survive in harsh plar areas.
Scientists already knew that sme f the fxes, native 20 Arctic areas all arund the Nrthern Hemisphere, made lng jurneys: DNA exchange links far-flung fx ppulatins in areas cnnected nly by sea ice.
But the fx these researchers fllwed std ut fr just 21 fast it cvered mre than 2,700 miles-----and shed light n far-nrth fx sighting which explrers wndered abut as far back as the 1800s.
“We didn’t really knw hw they 22 (d)that and hw lng it wuld take fr an individual t d this kind f trip,” Tarrux said.
The castal fx the researchers tracked, als knwn as a blue fx, landed in Ellesmere Island in Canada n 1 July 2018.Of the 50 r 60 animals the scientists put trackers n fr a study, it was the nly ne 23 ventured utside f Nrway.

Directins: Cmplete the sentences with the wrds given in the bx. Each wrd can be used nly nce. There is ne wrd mre than yu will need.
There is distinctin between reading fr infrmatin and reading fr understanding. Thus we can 27 the wrd “reading” in tw distinct senses.
The first sense is the ne in which we read newspapers, magazines, r anything else. We can get 28 t the cntent f thse materials easily. Such materials may increase ur stre f infrmatin, but they cannt imprve ur understanding. And clearly we dn’t have any difficulty in gaining the new infrmatin, fr ur understanding was 29 t them befre we started. Otherwise, we wuld have felt the shck f puzzlement.
The secnd sense is the ne in which we read smething that at first we d nt cmpletely understand. Here the thing t be read is at the first sight better r higher than the reader. The writer is cmmunicating smething that can 30 the reader’s understanding. Such cmmunicatin between unequals must be pssible. Otherwise ne persn culd never learn frm anther. Here “learning” means understanding mre, nt remembering mre infrmatin.
What are the 31 in this kind f reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. The writer must be “ 32 ” t the reader in understanding. Besides, his bk must 33 smething he pssesses and his ptential readers lack. Secnd, the reader must be able t vercme this inequality in sme degree. And he shuld always try t 34 the same level f understanding with the writer. If the equality is 35 , success f cmmunicatin is achieved.
Besides gaining infrmatin and understanding, there’s anther gal f reading -- entertainment. It is the least 36 and requires the least amunt f effrt. Everyne wh knws hw t read can read fr entertainment if he wants t. In fact, any bk that can be read fr understanding r infrmatin can prbably be read fr entertainment as well.
    Ⅲ.Reading Cmprehensin
    Sectin A(15分)
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
Fr students chasing lasting wealth, the best chice f a cllege majr is less bvius than might think.
The cnventinal wisdm is that cmputer science and engineering majrs have better emplyment 37 and higher earnings than their peers wh chse liberal arts.
This is true fr the first jb, but the lng-term stry is mre 38 . The advantage fr STEM(science, technlgy, engineering and mathematics)majrs 39 steadily after their first jbs, and by age 40, the earning f peple wh majred in fields like scial science r histry have reached the same level.
This happens fr tw reasns. First, many f the latest technical skills that are in high 40 tday becme ut-dated when technlgy prgresses. Older wrkers must learn these new skills n the fly, 41 yunger wrkers may have learned them in schl. Skill undesirability and the increased 42 frm yunger graduates wrk tgether t lwer the earnings advantage fr STEM degree-hlders as they age.
Secnd, althugh liberal arts majrs start lw, they 43 catch up t their peers in STEM fields. This is by design. A liberal arts educatin 44 valuable“sft skills”like prblem-slving, critical thinking and adaptability. Such skills are hard t quantify, and they dn’t create clear 45 t high-paying first jbs. But they have 46 in a wide variety f careers in the lng run.
Accrding t the Census Bureau’s American Cmmunity Survey, cmputer science and engineering majrs between the ages f 23 and 25 earned 37% higher than the average starting salary f thse majring in histry r scial science. 47 , the average salary f thse majring in cmputer science r engineering by age 40 was $111,870 and scial science and histry majrs earned $ 131,154, an average that is 48 in part, by high-paying jbs in management, business and law.
Why did that happen? Accrding t a 2018 survey, the three 49 f cllege graduates that emplyers cnsidered mst imprtant were written cmmunicatin, prblem-slving and the ability wrk in a team. In the liberal arts traditin, these skills are built thrugh the 50 between instructrs and students, and thrugh clse reading and analysis f a brad range f subjects and texts.
I’m nt suggesting that students shuld avid majring in STEM fields, but I d think we shuld be careful f the urge t make cllege curricula ever mre 51 and career-fcused. A fur-year cllege degree shuld prepare students fr the next 40 years f wrking life, and fr a future that nne f us can imagine.

A recent study published in the jurnal Science Advances has revealed that the United States ranks as high as third amng cuntries cntributing t castal plastic pllutin. The new research challenges the nce-held assumptin that the US is adequately “managing” its plastic waste. A previus study using 2010 data that did nt accunt fr plastic waste exprts had ranked the US 20th, glbally, in its cntributin t cean plastic pllutin.
Using plastic waste generatin(产生)data frm 2016 — the latest available glbal numbers — scientists calculated that mre than half f all plastics cllected fr recycling(1.99 millin tns f 3.91 millin tns cllected)in the US were shipped abrad. Of this, 88% f exprts went t cuntries struggling t effectively manage plastics; and between 15-25% was lw-value r cntaminated(受污染的). It means it was unrecyclable. Taking these factrs int accunt, the researchers estimated that up t 1 millin tns f US-generated plastic waste ended up plluting the envirnment beynd its wn brders.
Using 2016 data, the paper als estimated that between 0.91 and 1.25 millin tns f plastic waste generated in the US was either littered r illegally dumped int the envirnment dmestically. Cmbined with waste exprts, this means the US cntributed up t 2.25 millin tns f plastics int the envirnment. Of this, up t 1.5 millin tns f plastics ended up in castal envirnments. This ranks the US as high as third glbally in cntributing t castal plastic pllutin.
“The US generates the mst plastic waste f any ther cuntry in the wrld, but rather than lking the prblem in the eye, we have utsurced it t develping cuntries,” said Nick Malls, senir directr f Ocean Cnservancy’s Trash Free Seas prgram and a c-authr f the study. “The slutin has t start at hme. We need t create less, by cutting ut unnecessary single-use plastics; we need t create better, by develping innvative new ways t package and deliver gds; and where plastics are inevitable, we need t greatly imprve ur recycling rates.”
“Previus research has prvided glbal values fr plastic input int the envirnment and castal areas, but detailed analyses like this ne are imprtant fr individual cuntries t further assess their cntributins,” said Dr. Jenna Jambeck, Distinguished Prfessr at the University f Gergia’s Cllege f Engineering and a c-authr f the study. “In the case f the United States, it is critically imprtant that we examine ur wn backyard and take respnsibility fr ur glbal plastic ftprint.”
59.Cmpared with the previus study, the new ne _______.
    A.cvers data mre cmprehensively
    B.excludes plastic waste shipped abrad
C.is cntrary t the latest glbal numbers
D.challenges the recycling way f plastics
60.Accrding t 2016 data, what can be learned abut the plastic waste generated in the US?
A.Over half f it ended up plluting the envirnment utside the US.
B.Mst f its exprted plastic waste wasn’t wrth recycling.
C.Less than half f it was actually recycled dmestically.
D.Mre f it is littered r illegally dumped than exprted.
61.It is implied by Nick Malls that _______.
A.plastic pllutin in develping cuntries is mre serius
B.US has been irrespnsible in dealing with its plastic waste
C.US shuld cperate with thers t handle its plastic waste
D.innvative means are needed t eliminate single-use plastics
62.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A.Plastic Pllutin Great Risk t Marine Life
B.US Tp Cntributr t Castal Plastic Pllutin
C.Plastic Waste Majr Surce f Castal Pllutin
D.Recycling Effective Way t Address Plastic Waste

What I Think f Bxing as a Sprt
Bxing is a ppular sprt. Newspapers, magazines and sprts prgrammes n TV frequently cver bxing matches. It culd be the tughest f all sprts t survive. It takes bxers hurs in the gym and years t develp the specific characteristics needed t be a great bxer. 63 .
It seems t me that sme peple, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sprt. When they watch a bxing match, they can identify with the winning bxer. This gives them the feeling f being a winner themselves. 64 They d that becaue the bxer cmes frm their wn cuntry, and if “their” bxer lses, they ften feel as if they have lst a fight themselves. It is a fact that many peple have feelings f aggressin frm time t time, but they cannt shw their aggressin in their everyday lives. Watching a bxing match gives them a way f expressing it.
65 Althugh bxers wear glves during the fights, and amateur bxers even have t wear helmets, a kind f strng hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in bth prfessinal and amateur bxing, smetimes with dramatic cnsequences.Bxers have suffered frm head injuries, and ccasinally, fighters have even been killed as a result f being kncked ut in the ring. Besides, studies have shwn that there are ften lng-term effects f bxing. They are usually in the frm f serius brain damage, even if a bxer has never been kncked ut.
T cnclude, I am persnally nt at all in favr f aggressive sprts like bxing. 66 We can celebrate mre men and wmen frm nn-aggressive sprts as ur heres in ur sciety. I believe that the wrld is aggressive enugh already! Of curse, peple like cmpetitive sprts, and s d I, but I think that hitting ther peple in an aggressive way is nt smething that shuld be regarded as a sprt.
