Charles Darwin was brn in 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. Darwin’s analysis f the plants and animals he gathered led him t questin hw species frm and change ver time. This wrk cnvinced him f the insight that he is mst famus fr — natural selectin. The thery f natural selectin says that individuals f a species are mre likely t survive in their envirnment and pass n their genes t the next generatin when they inherit traits frm their parents that are best suited fr that specific envirnment. In this way, such traits becme mre widespread in the species and can lead eventually t the develpment f a new species.
In 1859, Darwin published his thughts abut evlutin and natural selectin in On the Origin f Species. The bk cnvinced many peple that species change ver time — a lt f time — suggesting that the planet was much lder than what was cmmnly believed at the time: six thusand years.

Harvard scientists have engineered a grup f fish that swims autnmusly. Researchers say the experiment culd advance pacemaker(起搏器) technlgy and imprve the develpment f artificial hearts fr humans.
Researchers built the fish using paper, tw parts f heart muscle tissue — ne n the left side and ne n the right — and a plastic fin. A cntractin n ne side caused the muscle n the ther side t stretch. The stretching then caused thse cells t cntract, which mved the tail frm side t side and allwed it t swim n its wn. The muscle cells were frm human stem cells. The researchers als engineered an autnmus pacing nde, which acted like a pacemaker by cntrlling the rhythm and frequency f the cntractins.
The fish mved autnmusly fr ver 108 days, which is equal t 38 millin beats, the study states. Because heart cells cnstantly rebuild themselves, which takes abut 20 days, the fish cells rebuilt themselves a ttal f abut five times ver, says Kit Parker, a prfessr frm Harvard University wh led the research.
Years ag, Parker was disappinted with the state f heart treatment. “It ccurred t me in 2007 that we might have failed t understand the fundamental laws f muscular pumps,” he said in a 2012 statement. Then, n a trip t the museum with his daughter, he sptted a special fish. “I’m lking at it, thinking, ‘It pumps, it lks like a heart pump, and I culd build that thing.’” In 2012, his team created a fish that swam using rat heart cells, and then a ray fish with rat heart cells in 2016.
Thugh the researchers say the fish is a step frward fr heart research, it culd be years befre it leads t the creatin f an artificial heart, says Michael Schneider, a prfessr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, wh wasn’t invlved in the study. But that desn’t dismay Parker. “I think ther methds will be faster than us,” says Parker. “But in the lng run, creating tissue that relies n the patient’s wn cells culd ffer unexpected benefits.”
