The smart earring mdel is abut the size and weight f a small paperclip. A clip attaches ne temperature sensr t a wearer’s ear, while anther sensr hangs abut an inch belw it fr estimating rm temperature. The earring can be persnalized with fashin designs in the shape f a flwer, fr example, withut negatively affecting its accuracy.
“I wear a smartwatch t track my persnal health, but I’ve fund that a lt f peple think smartwatches are unfashinable r uncmfrtable,” said c-lead authr Shirley. “I als like t wear earrings, s we started thinking abut develping smart earrings.”
Creating a wearable device small enugh t pass as an earring, yet rbust (耐用的) enugh that users wuld have t charge it nly every few days, presented an engineering challenge.
“It’s a tricky balance,” said Shirley. “Typically, if yu want pwer t last lnger, yu shuld have a bigger battery. But then yu sacrifice size. Making it wireless als demands mre energy.”
The team made the earring’s pwer cnsumptin as efficient as pssible, while als making space fr a Bluetth chip, a battery and tw temperature sensrs. Instead f pairing it with a device, which uses mre pwer, the earring uses Bluetth advertising mde—the transmissins a device bradcasts t shw it can be paired. After reading and sending the temperature, it ges int deep sleep t save pwer.
In a study f six users, the earring utperfrmed a smartwatch at sensing skin temperature during perids f rest. It als shwed prmise fr mnitring signs f stress, eating and exercise. But they need mre data t train their mdels fr each use case and mre thrugh testing befre the device might be used by the public.
Fr future versins f the device, Shirley is wrking t integrate heart rate and activity mnitring. She’s als interested in ptentially pwering the device frm slar r kinetic energy frm the earring swaying.

    A. Its target users.B. Its design.
    C. Its energy cnsumptin.D. Its applicatin.

In 2019, an unattractive package arrived at my frnt dr. Inside was a 2-by-4-ft scrapbk (剪贴簿) filled with candy wrappers ver 70 years ld. It was sent by Jeffrey S. Green, wh was a famus candy cmpany’s vice president. After the cmpany clsed dwn, the scrapbk traveled 2,950 miles t La Verne, Califrnia, t the farm my family and I call hme.
I’m the funder f the nline website “Radside Attractin: Candy Wrapper Museum”, where I share my 50-year cllectin f little slips f paper, designed t be tm and thrwn away. Why? Because these small bjects serve as time machines, pening an emtinal dr t the past.
I was 15 years ld when I started cllecting candy wrappers, inspired by friends with cl cllectins like beer bttles frm arund the wrld. Sme f their cllectins are classified either by size and clr as well as sprts r peple. Inspired by these nvel cllectins, I wanted t start ne f my wn, but f what?I usually spent my few cins n candy at the candy shp. The candy shelves were a wnderland f tasty treats with clrful wrappers in different themes, all shuting: Pick me! Big Bears, Milk Duds, Jujyfruits, Chc’Lite, Lemnhead… Hw culd a girl decide?
Then inspiratin struck. Instead f thrwing away thse wrappers, I wuld save them. I wuld create a Candy Wrapper Museum. I hped that the wrappers wuld ne day be enjyed as art, nstalgia (怀旧) and humr. It was 1977 when I was a teenager. An idea struck me: I wuld cllect these wrappers thrughut my lifetime, then pen up the museum as a radside attractin in my ld age. I chse my first pieces, Nice Mice and Cinnamn Teddy Bears, and s began this jurney.
My family were the first t leave the candy wrappers t me. Then the relatives. My friends caught the spirit f fun and dnated pieces. Cllecting became an affrdable, nvel way t explre the wrld arund me, ne that culd turn even an rdinary shpping trip int a treasure hunt.
In 2002, inspiratin struck again. Why wait until retirement? Why nt pen the museum right nw n the internet, the ultimate “superhighway”?
