Mum was brn in a small village, which is famus fr the art f paper flding, and Mum learnt hw t make paper animals. In 1967, Mum went t Beijing, where she met Dad. They went t the suburbs f Cnnecticut later. Nt knwing English, she was lnely until I was brn.
When I was yung, Mum liked t make paper animals fr me. She flded up the paper, then lifted the paper packet t her muth and blew int it. There in her hands was a little paper tiger. It seemed that the little tiger shared her breath. This was her magic. At my request, Mum als made a gat, a deer and even a shark.
Mark, ne f the neighburhd bys, came ver with his actin figure. I brught ut the paper tiger. Mark examined the wrapping-paper pattern f the tiger’s skin.“That desn’t lk like a tiger. Is it a ty?” I had never thught f that. But lking at it, it was really just a piece f wrapping paper.
Later, Dad bught me a full set f actin figures. I packed the paper animals in a shebx and put them int the crner f the attic. Once in a while, I wuld see Mum at the kitchen table making new paper animals. I caught them, pressed and then put them away in the bx in the attic.
Mum was als trying t learn t speak English, but her accent and brken sentences embarrassed me. I tried t crrect her, but in vain. Eventually, I stpped talking with her. Fr years, I paid n attentin t Mum until ne day my dad called and tld me that Mum was in hspital. Dad and I std, ne n each side f Mum. She turned t me, “Jack, just keep that bx with yu, and yu will find it s imprtant.”
She died several days later. The huse was t big fr Dad and had t be sld. My girlfriend Susan and I went t help him pack and clean the place.
Susan fund the shebx in the attic.

Last Friday, ur schl held a sprts meeting in the schl stadium, which turned ut t be extremely rewarding.
I like sprts and participated in the 1500-metre race. Having kept practicing hard fr three weeks, I made full preparatins fr it, which enabled me t stand at the starting line fr the final. Unfrtunately, I fell behind thers sn after the start. I tried t run faster but fell t the grund, with bld running ut f my knees. I struggled t my feet and kept n running. Painful as I felt,I stuck t running t the end.It was a pity that I lst the match. But I’m nt regretful because keeping up t the end is much mre imprtant than winning the game.

I knew it was a letter t me written by my mther. I psted the pht f the letter n the website in hpe that smebdy culd read it fr me. In n time it received sme cmments. One translated it int English. Reading the letter, I culdn’t help sbbing. Thrugh my misty eyes, I read,“w ai ni, babei.” which means,“I lve yu, my sn.” I cried ut,“I lve yu, Mum. I miss yu, Mum.”
