Learning t play the pian causes cmplex changes in brain activity that shift ver time. Initially, certain areas f the brain becme highly active, but this reduces as learners becme mre skillful. After 1, 6, 13 and 26 weeks f training, the researchers used functinal magnetic resnance imaging(磁共振成像) t scan the participants’ brains as they attempted t play the increasingly cmplex pieces.
The scans shwed that playing the pian activates varius areas acrss the brain, including the auditry crtices invlved in prcessing sunds and the mtr crtices invlved in planning and executing(执行) mvements.
Over the 26 weeks, activity changed little in the auditry crtices, but generally decrease d in the mtr crtices. A reductin in brain activity represents its ptimizatin(最优化), which wuld be expected as the participants’ pian-playing skills prgressed, says Olszewska.
The scans als revealed learning t play the pian initially activates ther areas f the brain, including the cerebellum, which balances mvement, and parts f the parietal crtex, which cmbine different types f sensry infrmatin. The researchers als fund increased activatin in the hippcampus, invlved in memry, and the basal ganglia, a set f deep brain structures invlved in cntrlling vluntary mvements.
Activity in these areas similarly decreased as the participants’ training prgressed. This suggests their underlying neural prcesses became increasingly ptimized alngside imprvements in their musical prficiency, says Olszewska.
