Nearly a millin bats are killed each year in the United States by crashing int wrking wind turbines (涡轮机), pushing the Department f. Energy (DOE) t take sme measures.
As the United States seeks t expand wind energy t reduce carbn emissins and minimize climate impacts, land-based wind turbines are emerging as a threat t several bat species. In 2022, wind pwer generated abut 10 percent f U. S. energy and accunted fr half f the electricity frm renewables. DOE prjects U. S. wind capacity t nearly triple by 2050, adding 260 gigawatts. But the scientific cmmunity currently has n idea why wind turbines attract bats r hw t keep bats away frm the turbines whse blades reach 200 feet. DOE has given scientists millins f dllars, aiming t address the knwledge gap.
The fund is ging t scientists wh will test untried methds f bat prtectin. The gal, Frick said, is t "find slutins that can maximize energy prductin while minimizing the number f bats killed."
Frick’$ team has received $ 2.5 millin t test whether the bright lights fixed n turbines t warn aircraft pilts, are attracting bats. If that is the case, wind farms can put up aircraft detectin systems that will turn n flashing warning lights nly when an airplane is nearby and reduce bat deaths. DOE’s funding will allw researchers at the nnprfit research institute t run tests in a wider range.
