At just a few inches lng and living n an affrdable diet f flakes, gldfish are ften viewed as the wrld’s mst unnticeable pet — a kind f gateway animal t prepare new caregivers fr cats and dgs t cme. Accrding t The New Yrk Times, the Great Lakes are currently suffering frm an inflw f gldfish. They eat everything frm algae (海藻) t plants t animals withut backbnes and can reach 16 inches t 19 inches in length, weighing in at 4 punds. And all that cnsumptin is destructive. The gldfish swallw plants that native fish eat. They als cnsume algae, which prmtes further algae grwth. Because they’re resistant t changing water temperatures, they can be lasting truble. They are als frcing native fish ut f their natural habitat.
Researchers have bserved a significant increase in the gldfish ppulatin ver the past few decades, a likely cnsequence f peple releasing pets that then reprduce. It’s pssible that tens f millins f gldfish nw live in the Great Lakes; similar gldfish prblems have als been bserved in Australia.
Pssible interventins include electrical currents that wuld kill the fish and netting t capture them and cntrl the ppulatin in breeding grunds identified by tracking.
Gldfish grew ppular in the U.S. in the late 19th century, when the U.S. Cmmissin n Fisheries gave away thusands f them in Washingtn.D.C They’re fairly crafty fish with the capacity t learn sme simple tricks. Advcates say the typical fishbwl is t small fr them and recmmend a tank f at least 20 gallns per fish s they have rm t mve.
With the right envirnment, gldfish can reprduce fast and live fr decades. But if yu’re nt interested in keeping them, experts at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service suggest dnating them t a schl, pet stre, r interested party — nt a lcal pnd.

Salad is gd fr yu, generally speaking, s grwing fresh greens in rbit seems like a winning way fr space wrkers t stay healthy. New research suggests that as nutritius as space salad might be, it culd pse smething f a risk t astrnauts.
The prblem is grwing leafy plants like lettuce (生菜) in space can cme with a side dish f bacteria (细菌), accrding t a new study frm a team at the University f Delaware. In tests n plants grwn in mdeled micr-gravity, they were shwn t actually be mre sensitive than nrmal t the Salmnella enterica (SE)(沙门氏菌).
We knw that the Internatinal Space Statin (ISS) is hme t a lt f aggressive bacteria, and if these space virus were t cause widespread sickness in an astrnaut crew, it wuld mean lives were at risk. “Yu dn’t want the whle missin t fail just because f a fd safety utbreak,” says plant bilgist Harsh Bais frm the University f Delaware.
Bais and his clleagues used a device t perfrm sme clever rtatin tricks in the lab, putting lettuce plants int a similar state as they wuld be in micr-gravity. They then added SE bacteria t the leaves. What was interesting — and surprising — was that the tiny stmata (气孔) in the lettuce pened up t allw the bacteria t get in. Ordinarily, the jb f the stmata is t keep dangerus attackers ut, while at the same time helping the plant t breathe.
The researchers then added a mre helpful species f bacteria, ne that typically prtects plants frm external stressrs. Again, the defense didn’t wrk in micr-gravity — suggesting there’s smething abut this state that disables the chemical reactins that the lettuce wuld nrmally use t keep itself safe.
Add in what we knw abut space bacteria being particularly tricky, and this is a ptential prblem. The team behind the study wants t see a lt mre research int making sure ur fdstuffs are safe utside f rbit.
27.Why can’t lettuce be grwn in ISS?
A.Its leaves takes up t much space.B.It brings in illness-causing bacteria.
