Trust is a tricky business. On the ne hand, it’s a necessary cnditin fr many wrthwhile things such as child care r friendships. On the ther hand, ___16___ (put) yur faith in the wrng place ften carries a high price.
Then, why d we trust at all? Well, because it feels gd. ___17___ peple place their trust in an individual r an institutin, their brains release xytcin, a hrmne that prduces pleasurable feelings and triggers the herding instructin that leads sheep t flck tgether fr safety and prmte humans ___18___(cnnect) with ne anther.
Swiss Scientists have fund that expsure ___19___ this hrmne puts us in a trusting md: In a study, researchers sprayed xytcin (催产素) int the nses f half the subjects; thse subjects were ready t lend significantly ___20___(high) amunts f mney t strangers than were their cunterparts ___21___inhaled smething else.
Lucky fr us, we als have a sixth sense fr dishnesty that ___22___ prtect us. Sixty tddlers were each intrduced t an adult tester hlding a plastic cntainer. The Art f Blming Late
In his teens and early twenties, Mzart had t wrk as an rganist and cncertmaster in his native Salzburg t make ends meet. Underpaid and unfulfilled, he felt a(n) burning desire t ____26____ mre time and energy t his art. S after a perid f dubt and deliberatin, that’s exactly what he did. He quit his jb and embarked n what turned ut t be the mst ____27____ and creative perid f his life.
Even if yu never hpe t reach Mzart’s level f mastery, yu may cnsider hw he remved all the ____28____ in his path t success. Maybe yu’ve dne everything right — ____29____ at schl, wrked hard, and landed a gd, high-paying jb-but yu’re tired f being just like everyne else.
Hwever, drafting a plan f actin can be daunting. What, then, is hlding yu back? Rich Karlgaard, the publisher f Frbes magazine and authr f Late Blmers, argues that ur cultures’ custms with early achievement discurages us frm ____30____ ur passins. Instead f having varied interests, studying widely, and taking ur time — ____31____ t self-discvery-we’re encuraged t ace tests, becme specialists right away, and pursue safe, stable, and prfitable careers. As a result, mst f us end up chsing prfessinal excellence ver persnal fulfillment, and ften we lse urselves in the prcess.
T prmpt a revlutin in yur wn life, there are a few things t keep in mind. First and fremst, it’s never t late t “becme” yurself. Remember that age ____33____ brings wisdm, resilience, self-knwledge, and creativity.

The dispsable culture
The dispsable (一次性的) culture started small. In1892 William Painter, funder f the Baltimre Bttle Seal Cmpany, patented the bttle cap. The bttles were returned and refilled, but the bttle caps were ____36____. They nly wrked nce. Painter’s chief salesman at the time was called Mr Gillette, wh went n t apply the same principle t his wn inventin, the dispsable versin-cameras, cntact lenses, barbecues- but the ____37____ has been taken a step further. Fr ____38____ reasns, mst f the electrical equipment that we buy fr the hme is effectively dispsable. This is because it is usually cheaper t ____39____ them than t mend them. This applies nt just t radis and tasters, but als t fridges, televisins and dishwashers. We nw live in a dispsable culture.
Mst peple feel ____40____ this new trend. We knw we shuld be reducing the amunt f waste we prduce and recycling as much as pssible althugh despite all ur effrts, landfill cntinues t increase. It’s hard t slip a CD player int the bttm f the rubbish these days withut feeling ____41____ especially if yu suspect that all it needs is a simple repair. But wh ____42____ that srt f thing these days? And hw much wuld they charge yu?
With persistence, ne may still ____43____ smene ut there willing t make the necessary repairs t yur brken bread-making machine, but even they will feel bliged t infrm yu that, given the likely price f the ____44____, yu’ d prbably be better ff thrwing away the ld ne and buying the latest mdel. T ____45____ that smething shuld be mended even thugh that will cst mre than a brand-new replacement is weird, t say the least.
This dilemma (困境) ccasinally ____46____ the pssibility f fixing the damaged gds yurself. If smething is next t ____47____ anyway, why nt take it apart and see if yu can figure ut what’s wrng? I have had particular luck with cheap, plastic, battery-perated children’s tys, where bad manufacture is usually the cause f the ____48____ and sme strng glue r tape is usually all it needs t put it right. Small children tend t be impressed by this srt f thing, which is prbably the nly reasn I bther. I wuldn’t suggest yu attempt t repair yur wn micrwave, althugh I managed it nce. It was ne f the mst ____49____ experiences f my life a difficult success t mentin in casual cnversatin, perhaps, but I’m still trying.
While sme repairs are certainly beynd the ability f the rdinary cnsumer, many are unbelievably simple. Finding willing ____50____ may be almst impssible, but tracking dwn spare parts has never been easier nw that yu can lk n the Internet. There are als hundreds f sites ffering step-by-step instructins fr making repairs.

In the early decades f the United States, the agrarian(土地的) mvement prmted the farmer as sciety’s her. In the minds f agrarian thinkers and writers, the farmer was a persn n whse well-being the health f the new cuntry depended. The perid between the Revlutin, which ended in 1783, and the Civil War, which ended in 1865, was the age f the farmer in the United States. Agrarian philsphers, represented mst elquently by Thmas Jeffersn, celebrated farmers extravagantly fr their suppsed centrality in a gd sciety, their plitical virtue, and their Superir mrality. And virtually all plicy makers, whether they subscribed t the tenets f the philsphy held by Jeffersn r nt, recgnized agriculture as the key cmpnent f the American ecnmy. Cnsequently, gvernment at all levels wrked t encurage farmers as a scial grup and agriculture as ecnmic enterprise.
Bth the natinal and state gvernments develped transprtatin infrastructure, building canals, rads, bridges, and railrads, deepening harbrs, and remving bstructins frm navigable streams. The natinal gvernment imprted plant and animal varieties and launched explring expeditins int prspective farmlands in the West. In additin, gvernment trade plicies facilitated the exprting f agricultural prducts.
Fr their part, farmers seemed t meet the scial expectatins agrarian philsphers had fr them, as their brader hrizns and greater self-respect, bth prducts f the Revlutin, were reflected t sme degree in their behavir. Farmers seemed t becme mre scientific, jining agricultural scieties and reading the farm newspapers that sprang up thrughut the cuntry. They began using imprved implements, tried new crps and pure animal breeds, and became mre receptive t mdern theries f sil imprvement.
They als respnded t inducements by natinal and state gvernments. Farmers streamed t the West, filling frntier lands with stunning rapidity. But farmers respnded less t the expectatins f agrarians and gvernment inducements than t grwing market pprtunities. Eurpean demand fr fd frm the United States seemed insatiable. War, industrializatin, and urbanizatin all kept demand high in Eurpe. United States cities and industries grew as well; even industries nt directly related t farming thrived because f the market, mney, and labr that agriculture prvided.
