Fifth-graders gathered arund a large tank inside their schl’s greenhuse. Plants hang verhead, and trays f seedlings (幼苗) fill the shelves. Small silver fish pp their heads ut f the water as Blanka, 10 years ld, hlds ut fd. “If yu put yur finger in a little bit, they might bite it. It desn’t hurt; it just feels funny,” explains Blanka.
At Manz Elementary Schls in Tucsn, raising fish at schl was ne small answer t a big prblem faced by many peple in the neighbrhd — fd insecurity. While the students culd have breakfast and lunch at schl, their families ften struggled t prvide dinner. The teachers came up with an idea: culd the students raise fd at schl fr the neighbrhd?
It wuldn’t be easy. Being in a desert regin, water was a scarce resurce in Tucsn. Apart frm that, the sil desn’t always have the nutrients plants need t grw, s the students wuld need t add a natural fertilizer. Inspired by the Aztecs’ ancient practice f chinampas, flating farms n lakes near Mexic City, Cunselr Mses Thmpsn intrduced an aquapnics (鱼菜共生) system where fish waste served as fertilizer fr the plants, while the plants’ rts purified the water in the fish tank. Apart frm fish, ther animals played an imprtant part in supprting the students’ missin t feed their neighbrs. Chickens laid eggs, and visiting pllinatrs (传粉者) like bees and butterflies helped transfrm flwers int vegetables.
Once the students had harvested enugh fd, it was time fr Market Day. They ffered vegetables as dnatins t peple in the neighbrhd and sld eggs and fish t raise funds fr fish fd and chicken feed. “We can plant gd fd and have fun while we’re ding smething imprtant,” says Blanka. “I’m s happy t be at this schl.”

Rsters (公鸡) act differently when faced with anther chicken rather than just their wn reflectin. This may mean that the birds can recgnize themselves in a mirrr, a key indicatr f self-awareness. In the traditinal mirrr self-recgnitin test, which riginated in 1970, researchers place a mark n an animal’s bdy in a spt that it nly see when seeing its reflectin. They nte if the animal tuches the mark while examining its mirrr image, which suggests it understands that what it sees represents its wn bdy. Few nn-human species have passed this test, but they include sme great apes, dlphins, elephants.
Hwever, results frm the test are ften variable. Snja Hillemacher and her clleagues frm the University f Bnn in Germany wndered if this was because there is little natural reasn fr many animals t find ut such marks. S, they have tried t adapt the test t the natural behaviur f rsters. Rsters usually make lud nises t warn ther chickens when they see predatrs (捕食者) but generally stay quiet when they are alne.
In the lab, they tested 68 rsters ne by ne in an arena divided by a wire net. They placed a bird n ne side, and either left the ther side empty r put anther rster in it. Then they added a mirrr t the divider fr sme tests. The results shwed that when a rster was paired with anther rster, it raised the alarm mre ften than when it was alne, regardless f whether it culd see its wn reflectin. When anther rster was present but hidden behind a mirrr, few alarms were raised, shwing that rsters can distinguish between reflectin and reality thrugh visin rather than smell r sund.
Since the birds acted similarly when alne and with a reflectin, they may realise their reflectin is f themselves, say the researchers. While the research suggests that rsters may recgnize themselves in mirrrs, it is t early t claim that chickens pssess this ability.
8.What can we learn abut the traditinal mirrr self-recgnitin test?
    A. The test was imprved in 1970.
    B. Elephants failed t pass the test.
    C. Mst nn-human species have passed the test.
    D. Animals tuching the mark shw self-awareness.
9.What made Snja target the rsters in her test?
    A. Their sharp visin.B. Their pr smell.
    C. Their lud sund.D. Their native behavir.
10.What did Snja’s test suggest abut rsters?
    A. They sent fewer alarm befre anther rster.
    B. They shwed mre interest in their reflectin.
    C. They used visin t tell reality frm reflectin.
    D. They were unable t recgnize their reflectin.
11.Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Rsters: Quiet Reflectin-bservers
    B. Rsters: Pssible Self-recgnizers
    C. Rsters: Clever Mark-checkers

An ancient Greek belief abut the mst pleasing cmbinatins f musical ntes — ften attributed t philspher Pythagras — desn’t actually seem t reflect the way peple wrldwide appreciate harmny. Instead, Pythagras’s mathematical arguments may merely have been taken as a fact and used t maintain the superirity f Western culture.
Accrding t legend, Pythagras fund that the ringing sunds f tw blacksmith’s hammers were mst pleasant when the rati (比率) between the size f their tls invlved tw integers, r whle numbers, such as 3:2. The philspher’s belief that listeners like music played in perfect mathematical ratis better was s influential that it has shaped hw western musicians play instruments.
But when Harrisn at the University f Cambridge and his clleagues surveyed 4,272 peple in the UK and Suth Krea abut their view f music, their findings flew in the face f this ancient idea. In ne experiment, participants were played musical chrds (和弦) and asked t rate hw pleasant they seemed. Listeners shwed a slight preference fr sunds with an imperfect rati.
Anther experiment discvered little difference in appeal between the sunds made by instruments frm all ver the wrld, including the bnang, an Indnesian instrument, which prduces harmnies that can’t be prduced n a Western pian. Althugh instruments like the bnang have traditinally been referred t as inharmnic in Western music culture, study participants appreciated the sunds f the instrument and thers like it. “If yu use nn-Western instruments, yu start preferring different harmnies. It’s fascinating that music can be s universal yet s diverse at the same time.” says Harrisn.
Harrisn says the findings tell us that Pythagras was wrng abut the harmny f music and that music thery has been t fcused n the belief that Western views are held wrldwide. “What ur studies are shwing is that, actually, this is nt an sacred law. It’s smething that depends very much n the way in which yu’re playing music.” he says.
12.Which statement will Pythagras prbably agree with?
    A. Western culture is superir t ther cultures.

    C. The sund f hammers depends n their size.
    D. Perfect mathematical ratis are preferred in music.
13.Which f the fllwing best explains “flew in the face f” underlined in Paragraph 3?
    A. Challenged.B. Defended.C. Matched.D. Imprved.
14.What can we infer frm the experiments?
    A. Participants mstly preferred the same chrds.
    B. Listeners slightly favred sunds with imperfect ratis.
    C. Different instruments can prduce the same harmny.
    D. Nn-Western instruments are nt appreciated glbally.
15.Accrding t Harrisn, what des harmny depend n?
    A. Western cultural influences.B. Pythagrean beliefs.
    C. The methd f perfrming music.D. Perfect mathematical ratis.
