The graphic nvels Maus and Maus Ⅱ by the American cartnist Art Spiegelman are nt easy reads, but they’re imprtant nes. They’re really a tale within a tale, in which the narratr (叙述者) interviews his father abut his experiences f the Hlcaust and his liberatin frm a cncentratin camp. Given that German has always been my first lve, it felt necessary t read these bks. Spiegelman takes the unspeakable and gives it an immediacy I’ll never frget.

Akira Triyama, ne f Japan’s leading cmics authrs, whse manga (漫画) “Dragn Ball” achieved wrldwide success with its mix f cmedic characters and rusing martial arts battles, died n March 1. He was 68.
Mr. Triyama’s bdy f wrk is recgnizable far beynd Japan’s brders, having influenced generatins f manga artists and cartnists. His best-knwn wrk, “Dragn Ball”, fllws a yung by named Sn Gku wh starts a jurney t cllect the seven magical balls that summn (召唤) a wish-granting dragn. Since its creatin in the 1980s, it has spanned 42 vlumes, sld millins f cpies wrldwide and becme ne f the mst famus manga, inspiring televisin, film and vide game adaptatins.
Thrughut his career, Mr. Triyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, he did nt care if his wrk did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, he suggested, unlike “ther manga artists cncerned abut cnveying mral messages”.
When “Dragn Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit, becming ne f the best-selling manga series f all time. It sld mre than 260millin cpies wrldwide, accrding t Tei Animatin, the studi that prduced the anime adaptatin. “Dragn Ball” was serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shnen Jump until 1995. A prductive manga artist, Mr. Triyama did nt necessarily have an appetite fr this genre as a reader. “I have always had a hard time reading manga, including my wn wrk,” he said in a 2018 interview with Kiysu City Public Library. He led a private life and gave few interviews. One f my friends takes hnesty t the extreme. He calls talks with thers that get t the cmplete truth f things, even difficult admissins in views, “lve cnversatins”. Once tw peple have such a cnversatin, his thery ges, they can understand each ther and act accrdingly. As a philsphical matter, my friend’s belief f “lve cnversatins” is Kantian. The German philspher Kant argued that lying t thers prevents them frm making chices based n the truth, which is cntradictry with friendship and lve.
In the 1990s, Brad Blantn argued when the truth is hard t accept, telling it can have csts, including scial disapprval and brken relatinships. But it is wrth the cnsequences because it can reduce stress, deepen cnnectins with thers, and reduce emtinal reactivity.
Bth sides can’t be right here. Either Kant, Blantn, and my friend are embracing a faulty thery, r ur sciety is missing a big pprtunity fr mral grwth. Yu might say that little white lies are a sciety lubricant (润滑剂). They can even seem virtuus. After telling a white lie, I smetimes pat myself n the back, turning my evil int a virtue inside my wn head. Sme lies might make life easier, but they dn’t necessarily make life happier. I wuldn’t want my wife t tell me what she thinks I want t hear, as if we were strangers aviding cnflict, and finding ut that she had dne s wuld make me feel distrusted and therefre hurt ur relatinship. I dn’t want a stranger t tell me she likes my writing if she desn’t, because unreal cmpliments make me suspicius.

The German philspher Kant argued that lying t thers prevents them frm making chices based n the truth, which is cntradictry with friendship and lve.
In the 1990s, Brad Blantn argued when the truth is hard t accept, telling it can have csts, including scial disapprval and brken relatinships. But it is wrth the cnsequences because it can reduce stress, deepen cnnectins with thers, and reduce emtinal reactivity.
