Being able t resist hurricane-frce winds is the key t an extended life fr many buildings n the Eastern Seabard and Gulf Cast f the US. Determining the right level f winds t design fr is difficult, but supprt frm artificial intelligence (AI) may ffer a simple slutin.
Equipped with 100 years f hurricane data and mdern AI techniques, researchers at the Natinal Institute f Standards and Technlgy (NIST) have created a new methd f digitally simulating (模拟) hurricanes. State and lcal laws related t building design and cnstructin pint designers t standardized maps. On these maps, engineers can find the level f wind their structure must be able t deal with based n its lcatin and its relative imprtance. The wind speeds in the maps came frm scres f hypthetical (假定的) hurricanes simulated by cmputer mdels. “The simulated strms, if they behave like real hurricanes, can be used t create the data in the maps almst directly,” a researcher said.
In the research, the study material came in the frm f the Natinal Hurricane Center’s Atlantic Hurricane Database 2 (HURDAT2), which cntains infrmatin abut hurricanes ging back mre than 100 years.
The researchers split data n mre than 1,500 strms int sets fr training and testing their mdel. When challenged t simulate bth the path and speed f histrical strms it had nt seen befre, the mdel scred highly. The researchers als used the mdel t generate sets f 100 years’ wrth f hypthetical strms. It prduced the simulatins in a matter f secnds, and the researchers saw a large degree f verlap (重叠 ) with the general behavir f the HURDAT2 strms, suggesting that their mdel culd rapidly prduce cllectins f realistic strms.
Since the mdel’s understanding f strms is cnfined t histrical data fr nw, it cannt simulate the effects that climate change will have n strms f the future. Hwever, the researchers believe that wind maps based n their mdel wuld better reflect reality. They als suggest that simulating as many realistic hurricanes as pssible with the new apprach can help develp imprved guidelines fr designing buildings in regins ften attacked by hurricanes.
12. Hw can the new methd help extend the life f many buildings?
A. By crrectly predicting future hurricane patterns.
B. By recmmending prper building materials t designers.
C. By prviding accurate wind speed infrmatin fr designers.
D. By gathering data n different kinds f weather cnditins.
13. What did researchers use their mdel t d?
A. Find ut the regularity f hurricanes.
B Add histrical hurricane data t HURDAT2.
C. Examine the effect f hurricanes n climate change.
D. Test the pssibility f using AI t prduce realistic strms.
14. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined part “cnfined t” in the last paragraph?
A. applied tB. attached tC. limited tD. cmpared t
15. Hw d the researchers feel abut the mdel?
A. Cnfident.B. Wrried.C. Dubtful.D. Disappinted.
