The leather jacket is age-wn and sft. I fund it banging in the windw f a shp in Brightn, England. I was there t deliver a talk n mdem wmen’s writing at an internatinal cnference, a PhD student eager t make a name fr herself and waiting fr her life t start. I had just turned 28.
I’m still clsely cnnected t that wman, her dreams and her ambitin (雄心), althugh she als frightens me. She was always quite determined, this leather jacket wman — she had a five-year plan and was sticking t it! This was the wman wh culdn’t find time t visit her grandmther, wh regularly missed her nieces’ and nephews’ birthday parties, and wh left and didn’t lk back.
She and I are ne and the same, but we are als very different. There was a change that happened a few years int the five-year plan. Each time ne gal pst was reached, anther tk its place. This is the pattern f the verly ambitius. I started t dubt whether it wuld result in any real success ther than an unwavering (坚定不移的) ability t give up everything else alng the way. My determinatin wavered. I realized I didn’t want the same things anymre. The jacket mved t the back f the wardrbe (衣橱).
Seven years later, as I stand in frnt f my wardrbe filled with useless clthes, I dn’t knw what t d with the jacket. When England’s cld spread t my bnes years earlier, the jacket had felt like a practical thing I bught. Here in Australia’s sunshine, it always felt a little silly. I let it fall heavily n the bed alngside the ther clthes I’ve decided t give away because they n lnger make the cut.
Yet, despite its uselessness and hw much space it takes up, at the last mment I return the leather jacket t the wardrbe. I think it will always stand fr a part f myself that I’m nt quite willing t give up frever — that ambitius, mtivated wman.
