Many peple have lng believed that bright lights draw, r attract flying insects. But that is nt exactly what is ging n, a new study suggests.
Researchers believe that artificial lights at night may cause prblems with flying insects’ natural navigatin systems. As a result, the creatures fly in cnfusin arund prch lamps, street lights and ther artificial lights. “Insects have a navigatinal prblem,” said Tysn Hedrick f the University f Nrth Carlina, Chapel Hill. He added, “They’re accustmed t using light as a cue(提示)t knw which way is up.”
Insects d nt fly directly tward a light surce, but actually “tilt(倾斜)their backs tward the light,” said Sam Fabian f Imperial Cllege Lndn. Fabian was a c-writer f the study that appeared recently in Nature Cmmunicatins. This tilting actin wuld make sense if the strngest light surce was in the sky. But in the presence f artificial lights, the result is midair cnfusin.
Fr the study, researchers attached very small sensrs t mths and dragnflies in a labratry. They then filmed “mtin-capture” vide f flight—similar t hw filmmakers attach sensrs t actrs t fllw their mvements. Researchers als used high-reslutin cameras t film insects flying arund lights at a field in Csta Rica. Such films permitted researchers t study in detail hw dragnflies circle endlessly arund light surces, psitining themselves with their backs facing the light. Researchers als dcumented that sme insects fly upside dwn—and ften crash land—in the presence f lights that shine straight upward like search lights. Insect flight was least disrupted by bright lights that shine straight dwnward, the researchers fund.
“Fr millins f years, insects riented themselves by sensing that the sky is light, the grund is dark—until peple invented artificial lights”, said Avaln Owens f Harvard University.

    A.Insects have a navigatinal prblem.

C.Nt all insects d fly directly tward a light surce.
D.Small sensrs are used t film an insect dcumentary.

B.Insects can psitin themselves facing the light.
C.Insects failed t rient themselves because f artificial lights.
D.Insect flight was interrupted by dwnward-shining bright lights.

31.Where can we mst prbably read this passage?

33.Why are temples and statues mentined in Para 4?
A.T prve the value f time.
B.T highlight the lngevity f bks.
C.T shw peple’s preference fr literature.
D.T emphasize the imprtance f ancient architecture.
34.What des the authr advise readers t d?

    第一节
    Dear Gerge,
I’m writing t share with yu sme details abut the “Campus Live Chinese Handwriting Cntest” that I participated in last week.
The cntest featured 300 participants, each given 50 minutes t transcribe a prvided Chinese essay. Entries were judged based n accuracy, neatness, and the beauty f handwriting. It was truly inspiring t witness the dedicatin and creativity displayed by the cntestants thrugh their handwriting. Thugh I didn’t win any awards, the cntest prvided me with a valuable pprtunity t learn frm thers and enhance my wn handwriting skills.
Next week, ur schl will hst an exhibitin shwcasing the utstanding entries frm the cntest. I wuld like t invite yu t jin me at the exhibitin. I hpe yu can attend, and we can appreciate the remarkable wrks tgether.
Please let me knw if yu can make it.
