The plants assigned t each sil were further divided int fur grups. The yung scientists added certain micrscpic fungi t the sil in ne grup. Anther grup had a tp layer f farm wastes. A third grup gt bth treatments. The last grup gt nne. Fr three weeks, the pair tracked hw many scallins spruted (萌芽) in each grup and measured the plants’ height nce each week.
Abut twice as many scallins spruted in clean sil cmpared t that cntaining plastic bits. But amng plants surviving in the plluted sil, a cmbinatin f micrscpic fungi and farm wastes helped them ut. Thse getting bth treatments grew 5.4 centimeters(abut 2 inches)per week. That was faster than either f the treatments alne r thse getting nne. It was slwer, hwever, than scallins planted in clean sil. They grew 7.2 centimeters(2.8 inches)per week.

He strngly argued, “The lame puppy is nt wrthless.
