In Octber, 2023, agricultural fficials in Califrnia discvered three Mediterranean fruit flies, r Medflies fr shrt, in the Leimert Park neighbrhd f Ls Angeles.
Medflies are ne f the mst serius threats faced by farmers wrldwide. The flies lay their eggs in ver 300 kinds f fruits and vegetables. When the eggs hatch, they turn int wrm-like larvae that can ruin the prduce. The prblem is that it can be difficult t knw that the flies are there until it’s t late. The fruits and vegetables still lk nrmal even after the eggs are laid inside. S the damaged fruits and vegetables can be sent t ther places, allwing Medflies t spread.
The first Medfly was detected in Califrnia in 1975, but it wasn’t until between 1980 and 1982 that the flies reached utbreak levels. There were dubts abut the gvernment’s ability t cntrl them. Then-gvernr Jerry Brwn authrized a campaign spreading the insecticide called Malathin t knck ut the flies. Califrnians claimed that the chemical being spread acrss their neighbrhds culd kill the flies, but surely it culd affect their health negatively. The state declared the flies were cntrlled in 1982. Califrnia stpped the campaign in 1990.
After the three were discvered in Octber, the gvernment set up a 233-square-kilmeter special area. This means that n prduce (fruits, nuts, r vegetables) can be mved ut f that area. That may seem extreme, since nly three Medflies were fund, but experts believe there’re prbably mre ut there. “It’s really imprtant t get n tp f this fast, r grwers wuld g ut f business,” said ne f the experts.
Luckily, Califrnia has develped a prgram t cntrl Medflies. The prgram invlves using planes t drp millins f male Medflies ver the area. All f them have been treated s that they can’t help ccasin new Medflies. The males are sterile, which means that even thugh they can mate with female Medflies, the resulting eggs will never grw and are s small that they dn’t affect crps.
8. Why is it hard t spt Medflies in the fruits and vegetables in time?
A. Medflies spread t fast amng them.B. They shw n signs f being infected.
C. Medflies are gd at hiding themselves.D. They can cntrl Medflies fr a shrt time.
9. What was Califrnians’ attitude t Brwn’s actin taken t fight Medflies?
A. Tlerant.B. Unclear.C. Favrable.D. Unwilling.
10. What’s the purpse in building up the special area?
A. T minimize the threat the prduce faces.B. T check ut the Medflies mre quickly.
C. T make it easier t drp the male flies.D. T test the true efficiency f the prgram.
11. What des the underlined wrd “ccasin” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Raise.B. Find.C. Prduce.D. Cllect.

Recently, Virgin Atlantic flew a large passenger jet frm Lndn t New Yrk using a new kind f aviatin (航空) fuel cmpletely.
Airplane travel creates nearly 3% f the wrld’s greenhuse gases. That makes cutting pllutin frm flying an imprtant part f the fight against the climate crisis. The refrm and upgrading f aviatin fuel has becme an unavidable trend. Airlines and plane makers are wrking hard t figure ut ways t make their flights pllute less.
The recent flight was suppsed t draw attentin t these effrts. Fr the test flight, the plane nly held peple frm the cmpanies invlved, and sme reprters. Cnsequently, it crssed the Atlantic Ocean with its engines pwered by 100% “Sustainable Aviatin Fuel (SAF)”. Virgin Atlantic says that using SAF cut the flight’s pllutin by 70%.
SAF still pllutes when it’s burned, just like regular jet fuel. The difference is in hw the fuels are made. SAF is made frm plants (and related animal prducts) that nce absrbed carbn dixide (CO2) frm the air. When SAF burns, it just releases this same CO2 again. That’s different frm jet fuel, which is made frm il pumped frm undergrund, releasing CO2 that was deeply buried. SAF csts five times as much as regular jet fuel. That helps explain why nly ne-tenth f 1% f the fuel airlines currently use SAF. Virgin Atlantic is hping its flight will encurage mre cmpanies t prduce SAF and that this will bring the price dwn.
Experts say it’s easy t make small amunts f SAF ut f plant waste. But t make as much SAF as the airlines really need wuld require farmers t grw plants fr fuel instead f fr eating. This culd als lead t mre frests being cut dwn fr farmland. Besides, there’re relatively few SAF prductin plants r cmpanies transprting it glbally. S sme grups argue reducing the number f flights taken is the nly way t cut aviatin’s envirnmental impact.
12. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 2?
A. Explain the first paragraph further.B. Make a predictin fr the readers.
C. Add sme backgrund infrmatin.D. Intrduce a new tpic fr discussin.
13. What can be learned abut SAF?
A. It can be easily mass-prduced.B. It can get rid f aviatin pllutin.
C. The demand fr it remains limited.D. Its price will drp sharply very sn.
14. What d experts think higher prductin f SAF might d?
A. Lead t anther type f eclgical damage.B. Decrease varius flights all ver the wrld.
C. Strengthen the awareness f greener travel.D. Reduce transprtatin csts f aviatin fuel.
15. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. SAF’s Fighting Against Climate ChangeB. Crssing Atlantic n 100% Sustainable Fuel
C. Virgin Atlantic’s Flying a Large Passenger JetD. Develping SAF t Maintain Flight Operatins
