I std behind the curtain, my hands shaking. As I listened t the crwd laugh at the hst’s jkes, I just thught why I believed I culd d that. Tw mnths earlier, I had signed up fr imprv(即兴表演)classes at a lcal theater, alng with fur ther graduate students.
When I first heard abut the imprv classes, I was trn. I feared getting n stage and perfrming in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph. D., s it seemed like the perfect pprtunity t imprve my cmmunicatin ability and gain cnfidence.
During ur first class, we learned the key cncept f imprv: “yes, and”. If smene says mnkeys are librarians, fr example, then mnkeys are librarians. We dn’t questin the lgic; we say “yes” and cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng. T d this well, we have t avid secnd-guessing urselves. Smetimes scenes g in unexpected directins. The best imprv happens when perfrmers stay pen t different pssibilities. Over time, I started t enjy ur classes. I als became better at listening and cmmunicating clearly in the mment.
That training was put t gd use when I was giving a lecture abut my science. An audience member surprised me with a questin that didn’t grw ut f the infrmatin I’d presented. Instead f getting cnfused, I used the “yes, and” methd, and it helped me find prper answers. Last year, I came acrss cnfusing data. Instead f getting discuraged, I kept explring the data and ended up discvering a new type f cell—ne that wasn’t behaving as expected. If I hadn’t stayed pen t the pssibility that the results were real, I wuld have missed ut n the mst exciting finding f my Ph. D. s far.
