The il-paint methd Lenard used as his base layer appears t have been different fr the “Mna Lisa”, with its wn distinctive chemical signature, the team f scientists and art histrians in France and Britain discvered. “He was smene wh lved t experiment, and each f his paintings is cmpletely different technically,” said Victr Gnzalez, the study’s lead authr and a chemist at France’s tp research bdy, the CNRS. Gnzalez has studied the chemical cmpsitins f dzens f wrks by Lenard, Rembrandt and ther artists.
Specifically, the researchers fund a rare cmpund, plumbnacrite (水白铅矿) in Lenard’s first layer f paint. The discvery cnfirmed fr the first time what art histrians had previusly nly assumed: that Lenard mst likely used lead xide pwder t thicken and help dry his paint as he began wrking n the prtrait.
