I recently attended a wedding in a rural area in nrth Italy, and guests were prvided with a car and driver fr the 90-minute jurney int the hills. That was exciting: A private car! A pair f eyes n the frnt f driverless vehicles culd, accrding t the researchers, give peple standing by the rad a better idea f whether they’ve been seen. That’s ne useful bit f infrmatin t have when it cmes t determining the perfect mment t crss in frnt f ncming traffic. “If the car is nt lking at the pedestrian, this implies that the car des nt recgnize the pedestrian,” said ne f the researchers. “Thus, pedestrians can judge that they shuld nt crss the street, thereby aviding ptential traffic accidents.”
Fr the purpses f this study, the researchers used a car which seemed as if n ne was inside. A pair f large, swiveling (旋转的) eyes n the frnt were cntrlled by researchers, but in the future culd be cntrlled by the car’s AI n an actual self-driving vehicle.
T keep the 18 participants safe, experiments were cnducted in virtual reality. The vlunteers—nine men and nine wmen—were asked t decide whether r nt t crss the rad as the car apprached. The chamelen effect was cnfirmed in an experiment by psychlgists Jhn Bargh and Tanya Chartrand in 1999. The part f their experiment included 78 peple, wh each spke with an experimenter. During the test, Bargh and Chartrand studied whether participants wuld cpy the actins f smene they hadn’t met befre, like mving the ft and tuching the face. The secnd part measured the impact that cpying smene has n the persn being imitated.
In the first stage, participants increased their face tuching by 20% and their ft mvement by 50% while in cnversatin abut a phtgraph with the experimenter.
