Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the frtunate by whse father believed that a new experience was mre imprtant fr a small by than an unbrken night's sleep. N dubt I had all the usual childhd entertainment, but thse are frgtten nw What I remember is the night f the shting stars, and the day we rde in a cabse(列车末尾的职工车厢), the telegraph we made that really wrked, and the "trphy table" in the dining rm where we children were encuraged t exhibit things we had fund — anything unusual r beautiful — snake skins, seashells, flwers, arrwheads... l remember the thught-prvking (引人深思的)bks left by my bedside that pushed back my hrizns and smetimes actually changed my life.

Mime(哑剧) pens up a new wrld t the behlder, but it des s tnsidiusly(隐匿地), nt by purpsely injecting pints f interest in the manner f a tur guide. Audiences are nt unlike visitrs t a freign land wh discver that the mdes, manners, and thughts f its inhabitants are nt meaningless ddities, but are sensible in cntext.
I remember nce when an audience seemed puzzled at what I was ding. At first, I tried t gain a mre immediate respnse by using slight exaggeratins. I sn realized that these actins had nthing t d with the audience's understanding f the character. What I had believed t be a failure f the audience t respnd in the manner I expected was, in fact, nly their cncentratin n what I was ding; they were enjying a gradual awakening — a slw transitin f their understanding frm their wn time and place t ne that appeared s unexpectedly befre their eyes. This was evidenced by their grwing respnse t succeeding numbers.
Mime is an elusive art, as its expressin is entirely dependent n the ability f the perfrmer t imagine a character and t re-create that character fr each perfrmance. As a mime, I am a physical medium, the instrument upn which the figures f my imaginatin play their dance f life. The individuals in my audience als have respnsibilities—they must be alert cllabratrs. They cannt sit back, mindlessly self-cntent, and wait t have their emtins arused by fantastic musical sunds r visual rhythms r acrbatic feats, r by wrds that tell them what t think. Mime is àn art that, paradxically, appeals bth t thse wh respnd instinctively t entertainment and t thse whse appreciatin is mre analytical and cmplex.
Between these extremes lie thse audiences cnditined t resist any cllabratin with what is played befre them, and these the mime must charm despite themselves. There is nly ne way t attack thse reluctant minds---take them unaware! They will be delighted at an unexpected pleasure.
40. The authr mst likely includes the incident described in paragranh 2 in rder t ______.
A. shw hw challenging the career f a mime can be
B. eliminate sme miscnceptins abut what a mi me is like
C. prtray the intensity required t see the audience's pint f view
D. indicate the adjustments an audience must make in watching mime

A. easy t summarize B. difficult t define
C. hard t cmment D. natural t imitate
42. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing is imprtant t the artistic success f mime?
A. Varius dramatic elements. B. Realistic details.
C Audience invlvement. D. Large audiences.

During a judging perid fr a recent shrt stry cntest, I started thinking a lt abut dialgue tags. Because in many submissins characters didn't "say" a thing. They shuted, they inquired, they assumed. Sme characters screamed while thers murmured. But n ne "said" anything. And I started wndering why.
Why d we tell beginner writers t avid creative dialgue tags in the first place? Why d we insist that characters shuld stick t "said," "asked," and the ccasinal "sighed?" And, if the advice is s f-repeated, why are writers still unable t resist the siren call f weep, scream, snap, r laugh?
The mre I thught abut it, the mre I understd the temptatin. We're always encuraged t use strng, actinable verbs in ur prse. Why walk when yu can skip r wander? Why cry when yu can s b r weep? Why wuldn't we reach fr exciting verbs instead f mild-bring dull-blah said? Why culdn't each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its wn right?
The prblem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting t becme smething mre than the sum f its parts. Withut smething t prvide structure, a cllectin f the wrld's mst glrius diamnds wuld still nly amunt t a heap f rcks.
And a dialgue tag shuld never, ever be the diamnd in any given sentence.
Dialgue is yur diamnd, friends. When we read yur wrk, yur dialgue shuld be s bright, s sparkling, s lifelike, s wnderfully realistic that ur brains "hear" each line instead f merely reading it. We dn't need t be tld a character is shuting -we can sense it in the way they spit ut wrds, clench fists, r strm frm the rm.
A dialgue tag is a mere signpst alng the narrative jurney, gently indicating wh said what. It's part f a stry's experience, but it's nt part f the stry itself, nr shuld it be treated as such. Dialgue tags ar c similar t lighting in a Bradway play: withut it, the audience wuld have n idea what was ging n, but it usually strives t shine withut calling t much attentin t itself.
What's mre, readers may nt initially imagine a particular line being "sbbed." When we reach the end f a sentence and find ut ur leading lady has actually sbbed instead f whispered, it pulls us right ut f the stry. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust ur understanding and begin again. But that wnderful mmentum when we're fully immersed in the scene, hlding ur breath t find ut what ur herine says next, is lst.
Creating a successful wrk f fictin is abut giving the reader all the materials they need t build yur fictinal wrld in their mind and nt a scrap mre. Readers need believable dialgue. They need vices s cmpelling that they pp right ff the page and int ur ears. And if yu've created dynamic characters wh speak wrds we can really hear, yu will never need t tell us hw smething was said.

44. The Senir Editr\cmpares dialgue tags t ______
A. glrius diamnds B. heaps f rcks
C. tiny, sparkling gems D. Bradway play lighting
45. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Dialgue tags are said t be the mst imprtant aspect f strytelling.
B. Withut dialgue tags, readers have t reread t adjust understanding.
C. Creative dialgue tags may interrupt readers' wnderful reading flw.
D. Effective dialgue tags shuld describe characters' emtins directly.
46. The writer. mst prbably agrees that ______.
A. gd wrks f fictin give as many materials as pssible
