In an effrt t prevent language lss, schlars frm a number f rganizatins-UNESCO and Natinal Gegraphic amng them—have fr many years been dcumenting dying languages an the cultures they reflect.
Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, wh specializes in the languages and ral traditins f the Himalayas, is fllwing in that traditin. His recently published bk, A grammar f Thangmi with an Ethnlinguistic Intrductin t the Speakers and Their Culture, grws ut f his experience living, wrking, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Dcumenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting pint fr Turin, wh seeks t include ther languages and ral traditins acrss the Himalaya reaches f India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is nt cntent t simply recrd these vices befre they disappear withut recrd.
At the University f Cambridge, Turin discvered a wealth f imprtant materials—including phtgraphs, films, tape recrdings, and field ntes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need f care and prtectin.
Nw, thrugh the tw rganizatins that he has runded—the Digital Himalaya Prject and the Wrld Oral Literature Prject—Turin has started a campaign t make such dcuments, fund in libraries and stres arund the wrld, available nt just t schlars but t the yunger generatins f cmmunities frm whm the materials were riginally cllected. I am standing next t a five-year ld girl in Prmpuraaw, a small native cmmunity in nrthern Australia. When I ask her t pint nrth, she pints exactly and withut hesitatin. My cmpass(指南针)says she is right. Later, back in a lecture hall at Stanfrd University, I make the same request f an audience f excellent prfessrs. Many refuse; they d nt knw the answer.

Unlike English, the language spken in Prmpuraaw des nt use relative spatial(空间感的)terms such as left and right. Rather speakers talk in terms f abslute directins. Of curse, in English we als use directin terms but nly fr large spatial scales(标度). We wuld nt say, fr example, “They set the salad frks sutheast f the dinner frks!” But in Prmpuraaw, abslute directins are used at all scales. This means ne ends up saying things like “the cup is sutheast f the plate” r “the by standing t the suth f Mary is my brther.”

C.The language she speaks.D.The English culture she absrbs.
34.What can be shwn frm the verb used in the language Mian?
A.The time.B.The gender.C.The space.D.The event.
