The Future f Publishing: E-publish r die?The iPad and its kind are bth gd and bad fr bk publishers. Like many ther parts f the media industry, publishing is being 41 reshaped by the grwth f the Internet. Fr years, e-bks have 42 t cut sales f the ld-fashined kind. In respnse, publishers are trying t supprt their traditinal business while preparing fr a future in which e-bks will represent a much bigger chunk f sales.
Fr sme time, publishers have perated a"whlesale" pricing mdel with Amazn. This has enabled Amazn t set the price f many new e-bks at $9.99. Amazn has maintained prices lw in rder t bst 43 fr its Kindle. Hwever, publishers are 44 that this may make cnsumers expect lwer prices fr all kinds f bks. Sme in the industry even 46 that publishers will suffer a similar fate t that f music cmpanies, whse frtunes disappeared when sngs can be cheaply sld nline. Glbalizatin Is Causing the Death f Minrity Languages
As the wrld becmes mre cnnected language diversity is declining at an unprecedented rate. Frty percent f the wrld's 7,000 languages in 51 are at risk f disappearing, accrding t estimates by the Endangered Languages Prject. That trend is 52 linked t ecnmic glbalizatin, as suggested by a new reprt published in Prceedings f the Ryal Sciety B.
"The dminating effect f a single sciecnmic factr, GDP per capita(人均), n speaker grwth rate suggests that ecnmic grwth and glbalizatin are 53 drivers f recent language speaker declines (mainly since the 1970s nwards), thrugh plitical and educatinal develpments,"the researchers cnclude in their reprt.
Actually, the impact f glbal ecnmies n language 54 has been an argument that ges all the way back t the 1970s, when Herbert Schiller prpsed the htly debated thery f "cultural imperialism(帝国主义)", which suggested ecnmically pwerful natins hld huge cultural 55 ver the weaker cuntries they influence.
Hwever, such impact has never been fully 56 until nw, accrding t researchers. In the study, the researchers first established a set f 57 languages, based n several factrs: small speaker ppulatin sizes, rapid declines in speaker numbers, and a small gegraphic 58 . After dealing with the numbers by using data selected frm the Ethnlgue, an authritative surce fr basic infrmatin abut the wrld's languages, the researchers cncluded that 25 percent f the wrld's languages are under immediate 59 f disappearing frever.
Threatened languages were numerus in highly ecnmically develped regins, like nrthwesten Nrth America, nrthem Eurpe, and eastern Asia. 60 they explred relatinships between the danger f extinctin and multiple envirnmental factrs, including rainfall and temperature, GDP per capita was the factr mst tightly crelating(相关) with at-risk languages.
Of curse, there are factrs 61 GDP that play a rle in the disappearance f minrity languages. Accrding t UNESCO, languages are als 62 by external frces such as military, religius, cultural r educatinal subiugatin(征服), r by 63 frces such as a cmmunity's negative attitude twards its wn language. 64 , even the internet has been linked t the extinctin f little-spken tngues by creating a digital 65 that lcks ut sme grups and give advantages t thers (and their languages).

    (A)
Years ag, I made friends with a cuple wh had recently fallen in lve. It was glrius t be in their rbit, watching as their relatinship blssmed int a serius cmmitment. I recall the night we celebrated their engagement, watching this glden cuple swing each ther n the dance flr, laughing while emiting a glw that culd light a city grid.
As happy as I was fr them, in that mment I culdn't ignre a sudden heaviness f heart. That pang was back, whispering, "Why nt me?"
It had been a lng time between visits frm the pang. In the past, it was a cnstant cmpanin as I navigated life with naive ntins f lve, rmance and fate. I had grwn up believing a relatinship shuld cmplete me. As a result, I ften felt mre lst than fund as part f a cuple. Then as I matured, I tk aclser lk at thse wh I thught had it all, the nes wh tick all the bxes, wh lk and act the rmance-nvel parts. And when I dared t explre under the shiny surfaces, I saw that n hnest cuple had what I'd assumed they had: the perfect relatinship, the easy lve, the lucky life.
N, what I saw was a lt f unhappiness. Yes, while sme cuples were bth blissed and blessed, many admitted that their relatinships were hardly the happily-ever-after. What's mre, I grew t understand I avided bad relatinships and like my life t much t settle. I realized I am the cake and relatinships just the icing. The pang nly emerges when I make the mistake f cmparing myself t thers.
The reasn why I'm sharing this is because in the past cuple f weeks, I have watched that glden cuple endure ne f the ugliest break-ups. What I saw that night n the dance flr was a rmantic illusin. When the bubble burst, the fall back t earth was terrible fr them bth.Watching the break-up, I am aware that t prtect perfectin is t d reality an injustice. I accept the understanding that there is nly ne relatinship that really cunts in life and that is the ne we have with urselves. And mine is a healthy ne, nt glden, but rsy all the same, because as my friends' split has prven nce again, shine and sparkle can blind the rest f us.

COLUMBIA, M. --Jilly Sants set three successive alarms n her phne, skipped breakfast, and hastily packed everything while her father drve. But last year she rarely made it t the drs f Rck Bridge High Schl by the first bell, at 7:50 she heard that the schl bard was abut t make the day start even earlier, at 7:20 a.m." I think if that happens," recalled Jilly, 17. " I will have t drp ut f schl. And I will cmplain t the end!"
The nearly 20-year mvement t start high schls later has recently gained mmentum as hundreds f schls in dzens f districts acrss the cuntry have adpted later schl starting time. These schls have referred t the accumulating research results n the adlescent bdy clck. Evidence suggests that later high schl starts have widespread benefits. Researchers at the University f Minnesta fund that the later a schl's start time, the better ff the students were n many measures, including mental health, car crash rates, attendance and, in sme schls, grades and standardized test scres.
"The research was nt a randmized cntrlled trial. Its methds were practical and findings were prmising. Even schls with limited resurces can make this ne plicy change with what appears t be benefits fr their students," Dr. Elizabeth Miler said.Researchers have fund that during adlescence, as hrmnes(荷尔蒙) rise and the brain develps, teenagers wh regularly sleep eight t nine hurs a night are less likely t be tardy, get in fights r sustain athletic injuries. Sleeping well can als help t stp their tendency tward uncntrlled r risky decisin-making.
During adlescence, teenagers have a later release f the "sleep" hrmne melatnin(褪黑素),which means they tend nt t feel sleepy until arund 11 p.m. This explains mainly fr their late bed time and naturally leads t late rising time. Other minr factrs include the presence f electrnic devices, which excites the brain and slws the nset f sleep. The Minnesta study nted that 88 percent f the students kept a cellphne in their bedrm. But many parents bject t shifting the start f the day later. They say ding s makes sprts practices end late, jepardizes student jbs and bites int time fr hmewrk.
At heart, thugh, experts say, the resistance is driven by mistrust abut the primacy f sleep."It's still a badge f hnr t get five hurs f sleep," said Dr. Judith Owens. "It suppsedly means yu're wrking harder, and that's a gd thing. S there has t be a cultural shift arund sleep."
    73. Why d many schls decide t start schl later?
A.Because they respnd t cmplaints frm students like Jilly.
    B. Because sme students drpped ut f schl because f early start.
    C. Because they find later start brings varius benefits.
    D. Because they wuld like t cpy the way f ther schls in districts.
    74. Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE accrding t the passage?
    A. Accrding t research, all the students experience higher academic grades because f later schl starts.
    B. Enugh sleep helps t prevent teenagers frm making willful decisins.
    C. Later schl starts are nt suitable fr schls with limited resurces.
    D. The leading reasn fr students' sleeping late is the existence f mbile phnes.
    75. The underlined wrd "jepardizes" is clsest in meaning t___
    A.harms B.intrduces C.frees D.exchanges
    76. Accrding t experts, many parents are against late schl starts mainly because_

    B. they are afraid that hmewrk time will be cut
    C. they fear students will get pr test results
    D. they dubt the advantages f enugh sleep

    F. He thught peple culd learn mre abut themselves by thinking abut their dreams.
    What Is a Dream?
Fr centuries, peple have wndered abut the strange things that they dream abut. Sme psychlgists say that this nighttime activity f the mind has n special meaning. Others, hwever, think that dreams are an imprtant part f ur lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us abut a persn's mind and emtins.
Befre mdem times, many peple thught that dreams cntained messages frm Gd. It was nly in the twentieth century that peple started t study dreams in a scientific way.
The Austrian psychlgist, Sigmund Freud, was prbably the first persn t study dreams scientifically. In his famus bk, The Interpretatin f Dreams (1900), Freud wrte that dreams are an expressin f a persn's wishes. He believed that 77
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung was nce a student f Freud's. Jung, hwever, had a different idea abut dreams. Jung believed that the purpse f a dream was t cmmunicate a message t the dreamer. 78 Fr example, peple wh dream abut falling may learn that they have t high an pinin f themselves. On the ther hand, peple wh dream abut being heres may learn that they think t little f themselves.
Mdern-day psychlgists cntinue t develp theries abut dreams. Fr example, psychlgist William Dmhff frm the University f Califrnia, Santa Cruz, believes that dreams are tightly linked t a persn's daily life, thughts, and behavir. 79
Dmhff believes that there is a cnnectin between dreams and age. His research shws that children d nt dream as much as adults. Accrding t Dmhff, dreaming is a mental skil that needs time t develp. He has als fund a link between dreams and gender. His studies shw that the dreams f men and wmen are different. Fr example, the peple in men's dreams are ften ther men, and the dreams ften invlve fighting. This is nt true f wmen's dreams. Dmhff fund this gender difference in the dreams f peple frm 11 cultures arund the wrld, including bth mdern and traditinal nes.
Can dreams help us understand urselves? Psychlgists cntinue t try t answer this questin in different ways. 80 The dream may have meaning, but it des nt mean that sme terrible event will actually take place. It's imprtant t remember that the wrld f dreams is nt the real wrld.
