Meanwhile, the tw sisters had grwn up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents' fd, but als grwing in America's wn fd-bsessed culture.
S, in 2013, the Leungs started The Wks f Life. What distinguished their blg frm thers was that the intergeneratinal heritage (传承) f knwledge that the Leungs were s eager fr was baked right int the cncept—The fur family members tk turns psting recipes, each sharing their wn favrites, tapping int their wn areas f expert knwledge.
Kaitlin is prud that The Wks f Life fllws alng line f pineers-flks like Jyee-Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, wh first started t bring Chinese hme cking int the mainstream in the US."We feel prud that we have made a meaningful mark ver the past decade, casting light that there's a huge demand fr these recipes," she says. “It's abut representatin, yes, but there's als a huge demand. Asian Americans lk t recnnect with the fd f their heritage."

Laughter cmes in many frms, frm a plite and quiet laugh t a great hearty laugh. Scientists are nw develping an AI system t recreate different laughs in prper scial cntexts. The team behind the laughing rbt Erica said that the system culd imprve natural cnversatins between peple and an AI rbt. “We think that ne f the imprtant functins f cnversatinal AI is empathy(共情),” said Dr Kji Inue, the lead authr f the research. “S we decided that ne way a rbt can empathize with its users is t share their laughter.”
The team have set ut t teach their AI system the art f cnversatinal laughter. They gathered training data frm mre than 80 daily dialgues between male subjects and the rbt that was initially perated by fur actresses remtely. The dialgue data was gruped int scial laughs (where plite r embarrassed laughter isn’t invlved) and laughter f jy. Based n the audi files, the algrithm(算法) learned the basic characteristics f scial laughs, which tend t be sfter, and merry laughs, with the aim f mirrring these inapprpriate situatins.
“Our biggest bstructr in the wrk was identifying the actual cases f shared laughter because as yu knw, mst laughter is actually nt shared at all,” said Inue. “We had t carefully decide exactly which laughs we culd use fr ur analysis and we culdn’t just assume that any laugh can be respnded t. It was really nt easy wrk.” The team said laughter culd help create rbts with their wn distinct character althugh it culd take mre than 20 years befre it wuld be pssible t have a casual chat with a rbt like we wuld with a friend.
“One f the things we’d keep in mind is that a laughing rbt r algrithm will never be able t understand yu r the meaning f laughter,” pints ut Prf. Sandra Wachter f the Oxfrd Internet Institute. “But with their develpment, they might get very gd at tricking yu int believing they understand what’s ging n.”
    28. Why did Inue 's team develp the AI system?
    A. T better understand human empathy.
    B. T prmte the scial skills f rbts.
    C. T explre the differences between laughs.
    D. T assist rbts in identifying peple's mds.
29.What can rbt Erica prbably d at present?
    A. Repeat the details f the 80 dialgues
    B. Distinguish peple by hearing their laughs
    C. Recreate a scene played by the fur actresses
    D. Master the features f laughs prvided by data.
30.What des the underlined wrd “bstructr” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Ptential. B. Barrier. C. Alternative. D. Divisin.
31.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Are AI systems ging beynd human ability?
    B. Can cnversatinal AI really understand us?
    C. Laughing rbts are rund the cnner.

Of the mre than 3 000 species f msquites in the wrld, just a small number specialize in sucking human bld. Hw msquites track us dwn s effectively isn't currently knwn, but it matters, since they carry dangerus diseases which may cause death.
“In fact, stpping these annying insects in their tracks culd save up t half a millin lives lst t thse diseases each year." said Carlyn Gaff, a prfessr f eclgy and evlutinary bilgy at the Princetn Neurscience Institute. That's why Gauf's team wanted t understand hw they find and target humans.
Msquites mstly chse what t bite based n dur (气味). Knwing hw a ptentially disease-carrying msquit finds a persn, while ignring ther warm-blded animals, is a key questin. But it's nt easy t answer, since any animal smell is made up f hundreds f chemicals mixed tgether in specific percentage. The actual chemicals that are fund in human dur are basically the same as the chemicals fund in amimal dur—it's the percentages and the relative large amunt f thse substances in human mixtures that's unique," said Gauff.
T investigate, researchers decided t recrd neural(神经的)activity in the brain f msquites while expsing them t natural human and animal dur samples. They cllected dur samples frm abut 40 different animals. When they cmpared sme f thse with the 16 human samples, smething jumped ut. Decanal(癸醛) is particularly rich in human skin. Cmmn in the natural wrld, in humans, decanal cmes frm anther mre cmplex substance. When ne cmpnent f ur skin's natural ils, sapienic acid(皂酸), breaks dwn, decanal is left ver. This acid is nly fund in human beings. It's what likely leads t the high levels f decanal that help the msquites smell their way t us.
Understanding what the msquites are targeting is nly part f the stry; knwing hw they d it is als imprtant. T see exactly hw msquites use this sense, scientists used genetically mdified (转基因的) msquites s that they culd cut pen msquites' heads and watch neurns firing when they're expsed t human and animal durs. The research team already knew that msquites have abut 60 different types f neurns that sense durs,s when they lked in the insects' brains, they thught they might see a lt f activities. But it was surprisingly quiet, meaning that the signal was perhaps quite simple, dwn t just a cuple types f neurns." One type f neurn respnded really strngly t bth humans and animals. Anther type f neurn respnded t bth—but it respnded much mre strngly t humans than animals," Gauff said.
Hw t keep msquites' decanal signal frm being transmitted will be the research team's next fcus. Gauff hped their current wrk culd be used t make msquit killers and attractants t prevent disease.
    32. What's the final purpse f the research cnducted by Gauff's team?
    A. T study why nly certain msquites suck human bld.
    B. T investigate the neural activity in msquites' brains.
    C. T test the effectiveness f msquit killers.
    D. T help prevent deadly diseases caused by msquites
    33. T which substance(s) wuld msquits mstly be attracted?
    A. Remains f decmpsed sapienic acid. B. Chemicals in the envirnment
    C. Decanal generated in human bld. D. Natural il frm human skin
34.What can we learn frm the passage?
    A. Chemicals fund in human and animal durs are quite different.
    B. Genetically mdified msquites are nt sensitive t human dur.
    C. Further research will fcus n dur signal and neural cnnectin.
    D. Mst msquit neurns are nt invlved in respnding t human dur.
    35. Frm the last paragraph, which pinin accurately describes the future usage f Gauf and his team's research?
    A. Develping mre effective msquit killers.
    B. Studying msquit neural cnnectins in respnse t dur signals.
    C. Analyzing the types f neurns in msquites.
    D. Discussing the benefits f preventing msquites transmitting the decanal signal.

    C

由文章第一段“Scientists are nw develping an AI system t recreate different laughs in prper scial cntexts. The team said that the system culd imprve natural cnversatins between peple and an AI rbt.(科学家们现在正在开发一种人工智能系统,在适当的社交环境中重现不同的笑声。该团队表示,该系统可以提高人与人工智能机器人之间的自然对话。)”可知,团队开发了人工智能系统是为了提高机器人的社交技能。故选B项。
29.推理判断题。由文章第二段“The team have set ut t teach their AI system the art f cnversatinal laughter. They gathered training data frm mre than 80 daily dialgues between male subjects and the rbt that was initially perated by fur actresses remtely. The dialgue data was gruped int scial laughs (where plite r embarrassed laughter isn’t invlved) and laughter f jy. Based n the audi files, the algrithm(算法) learned the basic characteristics f scial laughs, which tend t be sfter, and merry laughs, with the aim f mirrring these inapprpriate situatins.(该团队已经开始教授他们的人工智能系统对话式大笑的艺术。
由文章第三段“‘Our biggest bstructr in the wrk was identifying the actual cases f shared laughter because as yu knw, mst laughter is actually nt shared at all,’ said Inue. ‘We had t carefully decide exactly which laughs we culd use fr ur analysis and we culdn’t just assume that any laugh can be respnded t. 31.主旨大意题。由文章第一段“Laughter cmes in many frms, frm a plite and quiet laugh t a great hearty laugh. Scientists are nw develping an AI system t recreate different laughs in prper scial cntexts. (笑声有多种形式,从礼貌而安静的笑声到开怀大笑。科学家们现在正在开发一种人工智能系统,在适当的社交环境中重现不同的笑声。)”以及下文内容可知,文章主要介绍科学家正在研究一款拥有可以笑的机器人。所以C项Laughing rbts are rund the crner.(会笑的机器人即将问世。)符合语境。故选C项。

(普林斯顿神经科学研究所的生态学和进化生物学教授Carlyn Gauff说:"事实上,阻止这些烦人的蚊子在它们的轨道上活动,每年可以挽救多达50万人因这些疾病而丧生的生命。"这就是为什么Gauff的团队想要了解蚊子如何发现和瞄准人类的原因)和最后一段中的Gauff hped their current wrk culd be used t make msquit killers and attractants t prevent disease.
Decanal is particularly rich in human skin. (癸醛在人体皮肤中特别丰富)和When ne cmpnent f ur skin's natural ils, sapienic acid, breaks dwn, decanal is left ver. This acid is nly fund in human beings. It's what likely leads t the high levels f decanal that help the msquites smell their way t us.
The research team already knew that msquites have abut 60 different types f neurns that sense drs,s when they lked in the insects' brains, they thught they might see a lt f activity. But it was surprisingly quiet, meaning that the signal was perhaps quite simple, dwn t just a cuple types f neurns. "One type f neurn respnded really strngly t bth humans and animals.Anther type f neurn respnded t bth—but it respnded much mre strngly t humans than animals," Gauff said.
    35. 根据Gauff hped their current wrk culd be used t make msquit killers and attractants t prevent disease.
